Singapore, 26 March 2015 – Over 400 rehabilitation specialists, therapists, doctors, and industry leaders attended the opening plenary session of the 6th Annual Singapore Rehabilitation Conference, this morning at MAX Atria @ Singapore EXPO.

The conference is held in conjunction with RehabTech Asia 2015, Asia’s leading trade event for the assistive technology, integrated care and rehabilitation engineering industry. This year’s exhibition includes the strategic staging of two new conferences - the RESNA Asia Pacific Conference 2015 and the NeuroRehabilitation Medicine & Innovation Asia Pacific Congress 2015, providing attendees a holistic intra-discipline exchange and networking platform.

In the speech issued by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Health, he referred to the MOH 2020 Healthcare Master Plan and the measures it contains to help Singapore’s seniors remain functional and independent for as long as possible, as well as plans to support those with impairments and chronic conditions.

Besides adding day centres and home rehabilitation centres, the current capacity will be doubled by 2020 with four new community hospitals built, and 120 more rehabilitation places by 2016 to a total of 1800 day rehabilitation places in 2020.

As well as raising subsidies for intermediate and long term care (ILTC), the government has also introduced subsidies for home rehab in April last year which has already benefited more than 370 patients. In addition, staffing requirements will be expanded from the current pool of 1,200 physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists in the public healthcare and ILTC sectors with the launch of four year degree programmes in physiotherapy and occupational therapy by the Singapore Institute of Technology in September 2016.

With growing aging populations across the world, and the need for governments to maintain accessibility, quality and affordability of healthcare, rehabilitation and assistive living plays an important role for seniors who are living with impairments and chronic conditions. With the theme of Towards Enablement and Empowerment - Innovative Care Models for Asia, the conference addresses key concerns faced by today’s governments, and the healthcare industry including: Clinical Applications of Technology in NeuroRehabilitation, Geriatric Rehabilitation, Technology in Neurorehabilitation, Sports and Disability, Virtual Reality and Gaming. Weighing on this was a separate congress by the ASEAN Rehabilitation Medicine Association (ARMA) which discussed Rehabilitation Practices Across ASEAN.

The conference was opened with a keynote lecture by Professor Alberto Esquenazi, MD, John Otto Hass Chair and Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Chief Medical Officer at MossRehab, USA. Dr Esquenazi emphasised the importance of training and therapy for amputees, not only to reduce the chances of rejection of their prosthetic limbs but also for them to fully reintegrate back into society as able and contributing individuals.

One of the key show highlights at RehabTech Asia exhibition is the showcase of rehabilitative prototypes of the AR&TTs Challenge 2015, a competition to encourage social innovators in the region to develop technologies for independent living.

The show floor saw the Falcon E-Lite, which according to its manufacturer Falcon Mobility is the world’s lightest mobility scooter due to its radical design.

Hocoma also chose to showcase the Valedo Therapy Concept at RehabTech Asia - a first-in-Asia back pain treatment solution - with clinical assessments and functional exercise training. Mr Zen Koh, Managing Director of Hocoma Asia Pacific and Singapore said, “The first day has been good for us. We have reconnected with some old friends and met many new contacts. The addition of the two new conferences makes RehabTech Asia the most significant event of its kind in in the region.”

Otto Bock’s South East Asia’s Business Manager, Mr Daryl Lim was very pleased to be back for the second iteration of the exhibition. “RehabTech Asia is a must for us, especially staged here in Singapore which is the gateway to South East Asia. We know we will meet potential buyers from all our target markets such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam."

First time exhibitors, Rehab-Robotics’ Business Development Executive, Mr Sergii Molchanov said, “We came to RehabTech Asia because our Singapore distribution partner, Fu Kang Healthcare Supply recommended it as a great platform for reaching out to buyers from Thailand and Indonesia.”

RehabTech Asia 2015 ends on 28 March and is open to the public on the last day.

Commercial logging will be forbidden in key state forests in northeast China on April 1, said China's forestry watchdog Thursday.

The State Forestry Administration (SFA) said commercial logging would be banned in state forests in Inner Mongolia and Jilin to assist in the recovery of China's wood resources.

Before this, Heilongjiang, another heavily forested area in northeast China, banned commercial logging in state forests on April 1, 2014, the SFA said.

Supervision will be stepped up to ensure that the ban is carried out in full, and violators will be punished, the watchdog said.

The latest round of forestry measures were announced on March 17. By 2020, commercial logging of state forests will be reduced by about 20 percent and forested areas increased by more than 6.6 million hectares, an area more than twice the size of Belgium. Forest growing stock will increase by more than 1 billion cubic meters.

Forest zones will receive government grants when they stop logging to encourage green industries such as tourism and create jobs.

China has 4,855 state forests, about 40 percent of its total forest area, employing around 750,000 people directly.

Wood Taiwan 2015, Taiwan's largest & best woodworking machinery show that showcases the world's fourth largest exporting industry will be taking place from July 2nd to 5th at TWTC NANGANG Hall this summer, where Taiwan's expo-oriented woodworking machinery industry will join to profile top tech, wood materials, DIY tools and woodworking machinery that are further explored at featured seminars and workshops.

Since 1982, Wood Taiwan has ceaselessly dovetailed to lead the trends and markets. Organized by TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) and TWMA (Taiwan Woodworking Machinery Association), it hosts 200 exhibitors using more than 1,200 booths to connect with more than 5,000 visitors.

Spotlighting the world's top 4 wood tech exporter

Wood Taiwan 2015 brings out the best in Taiwan's hi tech woodworking that ranks 4th in global exports. A fresh wave of smart, automated & ultra-speed woodworking machinery will be displayed, since woodworking machinery industry is Taiwan's 3rd largest industry in machinery. And thanks to its agile cluster syndicate, more than 97% of her products are exported.

More than 87% of that cluster is located in the suburbs of Taichung, namely Shengang, Fongyuan and Houli. This massive syndicate applies a unique division of labor capable of providing everything from stand-alone woodworking machinery and upgrades to complete production lines and replacement accessories, parts and components.

To keep ahead Taiwan makers have meshed their skills with ICT for super smart automated and high speed woodworking machinery that's produced under CE and ISO certified conditions for CNC machines, automatic flaw detecting full finger jointing material preparation lines and feeding systems. Several exhibitions are spotlighting boosted output, safety and resource saving with a strong focus on intelligent automation.

The industry is comprised of more than 300 small-medium sized entrepreneurs renowned for outstanding flexibility in filling customer orders. Time-sensitive, small batch variety orders are now on the rise. And in response these makers have the clout to deliver high quality and cost-competitive products that built with decades of skill and experience.

The above strengths let the industry offer complete product ranges that include: sawing, moulding, finger jointing, boring, edge banding, tenoning, sanding, polishing, buffing, gluing, pressing, packing, dust collecting, surface finishing and portable machinery.

    Features at the Show!

    "Work Greener, live better"

With the aim of probing future production trends and responding to the global urge of cutting emissions, the show takes on "Work Greener, live better" as its banner theme. By showcasing "Intelligent automation" it promotes the best use of forestry resources both efficiently and environmentally. Visitors will find machinery that minimizes waste while maximizing output. Operators will experience less noise pollution and safer working conditions.

Fresh Choices Beckon at New Flagship Pavilion

With the show comes the first-time feature "New Flagship Pavilion" that highlights "automated solid wood flooring line", "full finger jointing material preparation line", "panel furniture line" and "solid wood jointing & cutting line". Such tech can cut labor costs by 53%, boost output by 30% and provide buyers with new one-line production solutions for greater returns.

    DIY Craftsmanship Workshop

Surprise! Taiwan's DIY woodwork tools hold high global repute, and the best is profiled in the DIY Craftsmanship Workshop. It gives that feel for the dream garage workshop when they try out the latest woodworking machinery and portable tools.

With these come many more special events such as the opening ceremony, one-on-one procurement meetings and seminars.

Two of the biggest toy and baby product fairs in Southern China, Toy & Hobby China and Baby & Stroller China, will commence next Wednesday, marking the first editions under a new joint venture named Guangzhou Li Tong Messe Frankfurt, which was formed between Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and the Guangzhou Toy Association last November. The three-day events, which are held in the Poly World Trade Center Expo in Guangzhou, will run until 10 April and are expected to draw over 40,000 trade visitors to source from nearly 1,300 toy and baby product exhibitors.

Commenting on the two newly joined events of the Asia Pacific arm of the German exhibition company, Ms Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager at Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, said: “The Chinese toy and baby product market is booming and we are pleased to be part of it and witness the growth.”

The scale of the two fairs jump over 50% compared to 2014 thanks to strong market conditions. “This year’s fairs will occupy an exhibition area of 75,000 sqm, 59% larger than the previous editions,” Ms Wen continued, also stating that the expansion can help more exhibitors benefit from the strong alliance of one of the world’s largest exhibition companies and a key local player in the Chinese toy and baby product market.

The two fairs also see a boost in their internationality as trade buyers from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and Turkey have confirmed their participation, while buyer delegations organised by toy associations from India, Spain and Thailand will also be present.

Innovative Stroller Zone and Electronic Pre-school Zone to make debut appearance

Two new zones, namely the Innovative Stroller Zone and Electronic Pre-school Zone, will give exhibitors additional exposure of their strollers and electronic products for young children. The Innovative Stroller Zone, which is located in Hall 1, will showcase the latest stroller and ride-on collections from renowned Chinese suppliers.

At the same time, to cater to the fast growing pre-school education sector in China, the 2015 fairs will feature an Electronic Pre-school Zone in Hall 2 to showcase a wide range of electronic products for children such as mini computers, electronic story books and many more. Furthermore, the Pre-school Amusement Play-set Zone in Hall 2, Animation and Character Licensing Zone in Hall 6 and Hong Kong Pavilion in Hall 4 will return once again, granting visitors easier access to broader selections of high-quality toy and baby products at the fairs.

Concurrent seminars to offer latest market insights

Speakers from industry giants including Toys“R”Us and Horizon Group USA will share their market insights with audiences in the concurrent Market Essentials Summit and Conference. Three seminar sessions will be held this year: China Toy Marketing Forum 2015, Overseas Toy and Stroller Buyers’ Sourcing Patterns and Behaviours, and Pre-school Amusement Toy and Play-set Tool Trends 2015 for Kindergarten.

31 March: Ever since its foundation in 1946, Sony has continued to drive the electronics market through technological development and changed the way we engage with and feel about technology. The basis of such achievement lies in the company’s continuous dedication to stylish and functional design with the consumer in mind. This was first recognised in 2000 when Sony received the Red Dot Design Team of the Year award. This year, Sony celebrates yet another success as Red Dot recognises the corporation’s innovative product designs with a total of 15 awards.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design, which is one of the world’s most distinguished product design prizes, is awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. In 2015, the jury received 4,928 submissions from 56 countries, which is testimony to the award’s global standing.

    The Best of the Best

Amongst the awarded products, Sony received two Red Dot: Best of the Best Awards. The nine adjudication criteria used range from the degree of innovation, to hard and soft qualitative design measures to functional and ecological criteria, and thus recognise ground-breaking, thoughtful and esthetical pleasing design.

    Apr 03, 2015
    Picture:

Chiang Mai, 26 March 2015 - The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB Is accelerating Chiang Mai’s leadership position as a premiere MICE destination in the region, through public-private partnerships with four leading-edge organisations in an MOU to develop an integrated MICE Intelligence Centre in northern Thailand.

Mr Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB revealed that, “Highlighting the government policy to stimulate domestic meetings and seminars, as well as public-private partnerships, this year, TCEB will focus on four major strategies to develop the Chiang Mai MICE industry. These include (1) introduction of the Meeting in Thailand campaign to generate more MICE activities in Chiang Mai and enhance the network of high potential cities in the north to accommodate MICE activities; (2) Tapping into the Special Economic Zones (SEZ), and neighbouring CLMV countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam using Chiang Mai as a centre in the north of Thailand for the forthcoming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC); (3) Promotion of experiential incentives activities at Royal Initiatives Projects and Royal Thai Military Tourist Destinations such as The Royal Projects at Doi Angkhang, and Doi Inthanon ; and (4) Upgrade local exhibitions to become regional domestic exhibitions, such as the Lanna Expo 2015, with more than 50,000 visitors.”

In addition, TCEB is driving Chiang Mai’s leadership position as a mega event destination, by bidding for and supporting more major events such as the Thailand International Balloon Festival. Moreover, TCEB is developing an integrated MICE Intelligence Centre by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pinkanakorn Development Agency (Public Organization), the Tourism Council of Chiang Mai, the Thai Hotels Association (North of Thailand), and the Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University. Underpinning Chiang Mai’s MICE strategies, TCEB is also revving up the region’s MICE capabilities, industry standards, and services to prepare the MICE City of the North for the AEC.

Chiang Mai Governor Mr Suriya Prasatbuntitya said that, “During the 2015 fiscal year, Chiang Mai has allocated a total budget of Bt5,253,200 for the Chiang Mai MICE City project as part of a provincial development plan. To drive this sector and engage all stakeholders, last year we announced the Chiang Mai MICE Industry Promotion Committee, with the governor as president.

“This year, we have identified initiatives including Chiang Mai’s strategic direction towards the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) and BIMSTEC as well as Chiang Mai Sister Cities. The regional cooperative frameworks will complement Chiang Mai’s position as a premiere destination for major MICE events. In the next few years, Chiang Mai will focus on penetrating neighbouring countries, and the ASEAN region.

“Chiang Mai Province will play a key role in supporting the MICE sector in three key ways, including (1) regarding MICE City as a high priority policy and key strategy for provincial development, in line with the government, (2) mobilising policy and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to drive Chiang Mai MICE City’s leadership position, (3) redefining clear mutual targets and stakeholder commitments, especially among management level executives and policymakers.”

“TCEB has continuously strengthened Thailand’s MICE Industry Roadmap together with the development of stronger MICE Cities. Undoubtedly, Chiang Mai is equipped to drive its MICE sector to the next level. In 2014, TCEB supported major MICE events in Chiang Mai such as the first Domestic MICE Mart, Chiang Mai Design Week, TEDX Chiang Mai 2014, and the 8th Thailand International Balloon Festival. During the first quarter of 2015, from October - December 2014, Chiang Mai registered 455 MICE events, with 340,344 domestic MICE travellers, generating revenue of Bt1,337 million. TCEB forecasts this year’s full year goal for the domestic MICE industry at 15.23 million domestic MICE travellers, earning the Thai economy a total of Bt33,069 million,” concluded Mr Nopparat.

UAVs bring new trends in environmental protection

    $

    Apr 03, 2015
    Picture:

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are playing an increasingly important role in China's battle against pollution.

During the latest air pollution inspections in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province and surrounding areas, law enforcement officials of the Ministry of Environmental Protection deployed UAVs to check key places.

UAV's were responsible for the discovery of at least one environmental violator in Hebei's Handan City, where the air quality ranks among the worst in China. Two outdated pieces of machinery were found hidden in the Hexin Iron and Steel Company factory. Government inspectors came to the site immediately.

The sintering machines exceeded emissions standards and operation should have stopped before the end of 2013. Workers were also found improperly operating the desulfurization facilities installed in the machines, an inspector said.

Six enterprises including Hexin were found violating pollution control guidelines during the inspections.

With strong determination to fight pollution, UAVs have been frequently used to monitor pollution discharge and the operation of desulfurization facilities of companies related to steel, coking and electricity industries.

As a manufacturing hub, Foshan City of south China's Guangdong Province houses 40,000 sources of industrial pollution and nearly 900 industrial parks scattered in different villages, which are difficult to supervise.

The long-standing problem has pushed Foshan to seek innovative ways to prevent and treat pollution.

When law enforcement officials enter a plant, often illegal behaviors are stopped, making it hard to collect evidence, said Peng Cong'en, head of the city's environmental protection bureau.

The UAVs used for environmental protection collect information with installed remote sensors, including digital cameras in high resolution, infrared and laser scanners and magnetometer. Some are even installed with infrared thermal imager which can show the operation of facilities at night.

Peng told Xinhua that the drones can provide video evidence and record the law enforcement process. "In this way, polluting firms fail to conceal their illegal behaviors," he said.

In addition to Foshan, China's Jilin Province also uses UAVs to monitor the Mudanjiang River, a major waterway in northeast China, in a move to ensure water security.

East China's Zhejiang Province uses UAVs to supervise factories and prevent them from stealthily pumping waste water into rivers or lakes.

UAVs bring a new trend to environmental protection. They also provide technical support in dealing with major environmental emergencies as well as assessment for construction projects, said Wang Qiao, an engineer with the Satellite Environment Center.

Wang said a new system, which could monitor the types, density and diffusion process of pollutants with the help of UAVs once emergencies happen, will be put into use soon.

Taiwan produces relative few coffee beans, but it is a prime destination when Asians want to open cafés, roast good coffee, or grow premium beans. How has Taiwan gained renown as a premium coffee hub in such a short time?

"Join the masters in tasting champion coffees."

That was the pitch made by a coffee lifestyle workshop in Xiamen at the end of February to get people to register for a "Taiwan Coffee Tour." The workshop promised the opportunity to brew coffee with Taiwan's top coffee maestros and taste and rate different cups, known in the trade as "coffee cupping."

The proposed tour's itinerary started with a ferry ride from Xiamen to Kinmen and then a domestic flight to Taichung. From there, the group was to head to the mountain resort of Alishan to see how Fang Cheng-lun processes his coffee beans and creates his winning roasts, such as his washed Sumatra that earned a rave review from prestigious online coffee guide Coffee Review. They were to be accompanied by coffee estate owner K.M. Lee, whose Alishan coffee finished 11th in the Specialty Coffee Association of America's "Coffee of the Year" competition in 2009.

From there it was on to Taiwan's low-altitude coffee hub of Gukeng. The group was to end its six-day tour in Taipei to experience Fika Fika Café, run by James Chen, winner of the Nordic Roaster competition in 2013, and Gabee, opened by Van Lin, winner of the inaugural Taiwan Barista Championship in 2004.

"Many people want to come to Taiwan," said Kuo Xiao-sen, the founder of the Xiamen workshop. He was putting together a group tour to Taiwan for the first time, but many leading Taiwanese coffee experts have given seminars in China and the diversity of Taipei's coffee shops has attracted hordes of Chinese tourists.

"The mainland has been strongly influenced by Taiwan," Kuo says.

Taiwan only produces about 200 metric tons of coffee a year, a tiny fraction of the 600,000 metric tons produced by Asian neighbor Indonesia, and coffee's history in the country spans no more than a century. But coffee has gained an irrepressible vigor and following in a country where tea has long reigned supreme.

    Taiwan's Independent Souls

According to International Coffee Organization statistics, the average Taiwanese consumer bought about 400 more grams of coffee in 2012 than in 1997 (Table 1), and Viva Taiwan Coffee author David Han estimates that the average Taiwanese consumed 1.33 kilograms of coffee in 2013, higher than the world average of 1.22 kg.

Because of Taiwan's limited production of coffee beans, the country's coffee fix relies heavily on imports, which are duty-free. About 400,000 60 kg. bags of coffee are now brought into Taiwan from overseas every year, four times the amount imported annually in the early 1990s.

Raw coffee beans represent the fastest growing imported coffee segment, reflecting the burgeoning desire among Taiwan's coffee entrepreneurs to roast beans themselves and shape their coffee's character and aroma. (Table 2)

In turn, when people enjoy a coffee at a local café, they are drinking fashion, the owner's life and his experiences percolating in every aspect of the shop, from its décor and music to its choice of beans and roasting technique.

"Cafés today no longer use standard loops for their background music. They have their own books and music to demonstrate their uniqueness, making them as independently recognizable as people's faces," observes Gordon Han, the founder of publishing company Souler Creative Corporation, who has published such works as the Coffeeology series and Viva Taiwan Coffee.

There were more than 2,000 coffee shops in Taiwan last year, generating combined sales of more than NT$10 billion (Table 3), according to Ministry of Finance figures. But the market is actually much bigger.

Market leader Starbucks had sales of nearly NT$7 billion alone, and coffee has also emerged as a staple at convenience stores. City Café, the coffee arm of 7-Eleven convenience stores with more outlets than any competitor, has annual sales estimated at NT$10 billion. Then there are canned coffee beverages, instant coffee, and coffee sold at breakfast shops and bakeries and even at body care retailer L'Occitane, household product retailer Muji and furniture vendor Scanteak that bring total coffee sales in Taiwan to an estimated NT$60 billion to NT$80 billion a year.

Café Wang is the CEO of Oklao Coffee Farms Co. Ltd., which does everything from growing coffee in Laos and importing and exporting beans to roasting beans and opening its own stores. Taiwan's coffee culture has gained such prominence, he says, that coffee courses are now required in university tourism and hospitality departments. He himself is teaching such courses in universities, and he has also held 10-day training workshops to develop coffee professionals. People aged 18 to 80 have attended the 30 or so workshops held so far.

Taiwanese now drink coffee in the morning, after lunch, when they're talking business or when they have nothing to do and simply want to pass the time. Those coffee habits have created fertile soil for breeding world-class coffee artisans.

    Taiwan's Fertile Testing Grounds

One of them, Fika Fika Café owner James Chen, became the first non-Nordic winner of the Nordic Roaster competition in 2013, and another, 35-year-old Yilan County native Jacky Lai, won the World Coffee Roasting Championship in 2014.

Electronics major Berg Wu finished seventh at the long-running World Barista Championship in 2014, and Liu Pang-yu took the World Cup Tasters Championship the same year just a year after completing his military service.

That these individuals from different fields have all shone on the world stage indicates that not only are Taiwanese drinking more coffee, their tastes are more sophisticated than ever.

Unlike in other Asian countries, the many coffee nooks and talented souls popping out from small alleys and lanes around Taiwan embrace cultures from all over the world and compete to innovate; they are why Taiwan now has the greatest allure of any player in Asia's coffee scene.

Taiwan may be a latecomer to the coffee craze, but over the past five years large numbers of Taiwanese coffee innovators have embraced the global "third wave coffee" movement dedicated to treating coffee as an artisanal product.

Van Lin, who in 2007 became the first Taiwanese to compete in the World Barista Championship, contributed his expertise to the StayReal Café opened by Mayday lead singer Ashin and then founded his own brand "Gabee," meaning "coffee" in Taiwanese. The brand has since expanded into China.

Lin says that despite the presence of big chains like Starbucks in Taiwan, there are even more small businesses that do everything from importing and roasting beans to creating their own brews and opening small shops. They compete on creativity and specialized knowledge.

"Taiwan does not love large-scale (coffee shops)," Lin asserts.

Because of Taiwan coffee shops' special traits of being small and distinctive and doing everything in house – the country's coffee culture has become deeply rooted and highly sophisticated in a short amount of time.

    Combining the Best with Creativity

Taiwan's "coffee roasting" capabilities stand out as a good example of this. "Uncle Coffee" blogger Hsu Chi-tung, who has toured cafés around Taiwan and Japan, says Taiwan is renowned in the region for roasting beans well, and many roasters have held classes in Hong Kong and China.
When people there want to open coffee shops, it's not surprising their roast coffee beans come from Taiwan.
The high concentration of cafés on the island means each maestro roasts only a limited volume of beans, but they all vie to chase down the world's best coffee beans and experiment with the roasting to get the most out of their brews.

"Any raw coffee beans you can think of from around the world, we have them. Beans from any coffee auction or batch, any country, or any estate, the highest grade or most expensive beans – we have them all," Hsu says.

Taiwan, for example, is one of the biggest customers of Best of Panama coffee auction beans, buying a quarter of the total volume available.

"The daughter of the Panama estate owner has even come to Taiwan," Hsu says with a laugh.

The innovative vibe in the sector has also led local coffee entrepreneurs to stop at nothing to import the world's best beans, coffee machines and roasters.

"Everybody in the business is completely crazy. We practically don't have a life. It's coffee at work and drinking coffee at somebody else's coffee shop when we're off work," he relates. Some of Hsu's peers even spent their honeymoon traveling around coffee estates in Guatemala.

    Local Beans Gaining International Exposure

This dedication to exploration and experimentation has carried over to Taiwan's small circle of domestic coffee growers.

It's January in Alishan. There's a chill in the air at an elevation of 1,200 meters, and a low pressure system has shrouded the area in a cloudy fog even as lunch time nears. Tourists in mountainous resort area may not be thrilled, but K.M. Lee, who did well in the "Coffee of the Year" competition in 2009, could not be happier.

"It's best when there's mist. There's enough moisture," Lee says, explaining the finer points of coffee growing to a visitor while carefully examining his coffee trees.

He then tells his workers: "This tree's flowers were yellow when they bloomed. You need to record that to figure out what the problem is and what its impact will be."

Lee manages his coffee farm with an industrial management mentality. He carefully observes how coffee trees planted in different years grow, watching how new branches bifurcate, how well the branches grow and how the tree's flowers are blooming. Those factors will affect when the trees are pruned and ultimately the success of the harvest.

Coffee trees growing in part of the farm sloped in excess of 45 degrees will deliver very fresh and less earthy coffee because water drains quickly, but that also complicates maintaining the crops and harvesting the beans, and Lee has had to install an automatic irrigation system.

He also requires his workers to meticulously record when it rains and the amount of rainfall on a daily basis. Beans grown under different conditions are sent to master tasters and their feedback informs quality improvements.

This scientific spirit is particularly necessary to grow coffee in Taiwan because coffee growing conditions are not ideal. Expensive labor and small harvests make it impossible to compete with major coffee producing countries on volume, putting a premium on quality and sophistication.

"Just looking at the cost of labor to pick coffee, it may cost only US$2 a day overseas but it costs NT$1,000 a day (about US$32) in Taiwan," says Viva Taiwan Coffee author Han.

This spirit of "testing and improving" not only applies to growing beans but also processing them, as local coffee masters concoct different flavors by creatively tweaking the standard "washed" and "dry" bean processing techniques.

    Small = Creative

Making one's way along a road enveloped in a cloudy mist that winds around a white-roofed orchid greenhouse and neatly terraced tea fields, one finally arrives at the farm of one of those master technicians, Fang Cheng-lun.

"Small volumes means you can focus on high quality," says the 37-year-old operator of the Alishan Zou Zhu Yuan (鄒築園) who has been dubbed the "Coffee Prince." His aroma roast coffee has earned high scores of 93 (on a scale of 100) in 2012 and 2014 from website Coffee Review, the self-described "world's leading coffee review guide."

Fang actually studied electrical engineering in school, but after he graduated over a decade ago, his father had him return to the family farm on Alishan that was growing orchids and tea. Fang tried his hand at growing coffee, but his inexperience meant he had no idea how to process the beans once he harvested them.

Fang went to extensive lengths, for example, to extricate the beans from their hulls, squeezing and twisting them, running them over with a car, or even putting them in a nylon bag and smashing the bag against a hard surface. To roast the beans, he tried wrapping the beans in aluminum foil and barbecuing them or even stir-frying them in a wok. These quixotic forays into coffee processing lasted quite a while, Fang recalls, but they served a purpose.

"As I fooled around with it, I really got interested," says Fang, who confesses to feeling bored after returning to the family's mountain farm. He found his passion and became obsessed with finding different ways to fully bring out his coffee beans' flavor.

Fang discovered that the "washing" method, in which the outer skin and flesh of the ripe coffee fruit is separated from the beans before drying, produces a clean, simple flavor. The "dry" method, in which the ripe fruit is dried whole before the shriveled fruit husk is removed, preserves the sweetness of the beans and other characteristics.

He also found that fermentation time, the natural enzymes and bacteria used during the fermentation process, and the drying method all influence the end-product's aroma.

Fang's curiosity has spawned constant experimentation and innovation. According to David Han, Fang has focused most of his attention in recent years on developing advanced fermentation methods, such as extracting enzymes from the pectin in the cherry's pulp and then adding it to the washed beans.

That spirit of innovation, Fang says, is partly a function of Taiwan's unique coffee ecosystem.

"Overseas, coffee is produced on a large scale. There are standard operating procedures. There's no time or room for changes," he says.

Taiwan's small-scale coffee cultivation and farmers who are "not controlled," on the other hand, have created an environment more conducive to generating change, he says.

The creativity and advancements seen in Taiwanese coffee circles has helped local coffee gain traction abroad, with domestic brands now selling their products on five continents. Local consumers have also discovered that while coffee may be a foreign beverage, it can be developed with a Taiwanese point of view. That has even extended to the equipment needed to brew good coffee.

Rex Tseng, the 41- year-old co-founder and chairman of coffee brewing scale maker Acaia Co., loved drinking coffee and sought a way to consistently "reproduce" good cups of coffee.

What he found is that coffee brewing has long depended on feel and specialized knowledge, but objective measures such as the amount of coffee used, water temperature and flow-rates can all influence flavor.

In 2014, Tseng raised NT$1.2 million on Kickstarter to create a company that aimed to turn the art of brewing coffee into a science. He fused electronics technology with his family's industrial scale company to develop a smart digital scale and app that accurately record detailed brewing data and methods.
The app makes it possible for users to share their data and analytical charts online for any good cup they brew with coffee aficionados around the world.

The company's digital scale has already earned several accolades, including winning "Product of the Year" honors and the "People's Choice Award" at the Specialty Coffee Association of America's annual trade show in 2014. It has made its way into premium Starbucks Reserve stores and U.S. Blue Bottle Coffee shops that have become fashionable in Japan. The product's app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

"From my perspective, Taiwan should use things that available to them to find and develop its own coffee culture," Tseng says.

This intensive exploration into every aspect of coffee, from the coffee tree to the coffee machine, and home-grown ingenuity has transformed a place where tea was once king into a hub of premium coffees. It is a new form of soft power that has coffee aficionados in the region and around the world seeing Taiwan in a new light.

Transcontainer LLC and RUSCON, two divisions of the GCS Group, are among the many local companies involved in the growing out-of-gauge (OOG) export business driven by the Russian currency depreciation over the last year.

One example is a year-long project to transport machinery via the port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea for a thermal power station being built in Harta, Iraq.

The machinery is sourced from production plants throughout Russia and Transcontainer LLC acts as the agent for Sarjak Container Lines which has the contract to carry the products to the port of Umm Qasr.

RUSCON operates the off-dock terminal which provides stuffing and port handling for the more than100 flat rack and open-top containers that will be transported throughout the project.

Pavel Merinov, the head of Transcontainer LLC’s project and out-of-gauge cargo team, says: “We are delighted that Sarjak has recognised our expertise in handling this specialised cargo and awarded us partnership in Novorossiysk. We are also working closely with our sister company RUSCON which handles shipments of machinery both in dedicated containers and as loose cargo in its terminal.

“Sarjak Container Lines, together with its partners like us in South Russia, is geared up to meet increased demand both in terms of specialised container equipment availability and facilities for safe and efficient handling of project cargo.”

Mr Merinov says that handling OOG cargo is increasingly becoming part of the company’s routine work, with a particular emphasis on exports.

“The fall of the Ruble has made our manufacturers more competitive in international markets, so we are seeing growing volumes of exports – to Asia, Africa and South America, which creates new opportunities for OOG shipments in specialised containers out of Russia.”
