Challenges and future expansion plans of regional hospitals revealed at Hospital Design and Infrastructure Conference in Dubai

Dubai, UAE, 7 April, 2015: Integrating nursing and patient friendly design has been revealed as the top priority in designing new hospitals throughout the Middle East and North Africa, according to a new survey.

Commissioned by Informa, the survey was conducted among architects, engineers and project heads from hospitals throughout the MENA region to identify the latest trends in the construction of medical facilities. The respondents cited patient care as number one, followed by the importance of embedding environmentally friendly and sustainable design.

The healthcare construction industry results have been revealed ahead of the 12th edition of Hospital Design and Infrastructure, a four-day conference running from 19-22 April at The Address Hotel Dubai Mall.

The top four challenges in building new healthcare facilities were: project management; identifying the right architects and developers; identifying medical equipment providers and planners; and licensing and accreditation.

Air quality was deemed the most important factor when considering building new facilities, with 81% of respondents citing it, while almost half of respondents listed lighting (49%) and landscapes (48%) as contributing factors.

A platform for interactive debate, learning and inspiration in the latest advancements and innovations in healthcare facility design and construction, Hospital Design and Infrastructure will welcome more than 20 influential healthcare speakers from across the Middle East.

Bringing together leading healthcare regulators, operators, architects and engineers, the conference will discuss unique approaches, advancements, applications and outcomes in facility planning, design and construction to develop unique healthcare built environment processes and build state-of-the-art healthcare systems.

The opening day of the conference will feature a key note address by Dr Layla Al Marzouqi, Director, Health Regulation Department at the Dubai Health Authority, who will discuss integrating transition planning with licensing and accreditation requirements to deliver successful and timely projects.

Speaking before the event Dr. Al Marzouqi said: “Hospital design helps in effective delivery of healthcare and goes a long way in improving patient friendliness. With advances in design, technology and access to updated knowledge, hospital designs have advanced tremendously over the years and surveys such as this one are vital to highlight challenges and advances in hospital design.”

Barbara Spurrier, Administrative Director at the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation USA said: “Our Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation is working to transform the experience and delivery of health and health care.

“The core of our model is human-centered design to understand the needs of patients and staff as we build new services and products to meet those needs. Our health and health care infrastructure needs to incorporate a human-centered design approach so our built environments work for the people who occupy them.”

Claude Allain, Vice President and General Manager for Johnson Controls in the Middle East, added: “The Middle East, and specially GCC countries, have emerged as leading providers of dependable, world class healthcare. This conference is providing a commendable forum for companies such as Johnson Controls to showcase technologies that enable healthcare facilities in improving patient outcomes as well as operational efficiency.

“Johnson Controls helps healthcare facilities globally in delivering optimised patient care through its Healthcare Environment Optimization™ solutions ensuring savings and operational excellence in varied applications from ORs to central utility plants.”

Mass-market green living: Net-zero homes

0

Apr 07, 2015
Picture:

The high cost of building such energy-efficient homes has deterred many property builders and individual home owners in the past, making “net-zero” building a niche market, but that seems to be changing.

“Net-zero homes are going mainstream,” writes Kris Hudson in a Wall Street Journal article, Builders’ New Power Play: Net Zero Homes. As the title suggests, builders are spearheading efforts to change public perception of energy-efficient homes, from a “niche product for the affluent who can afford custom homes” to one the average home buyer would consider investing in.

The National Association of Home Builders took the initiative in the United States with a display home featured at their International Builders Show in Las Vegas. The home was built by the trade organisation in collaboration with Blue Heron Design/Build LLC in an effort to raise awareness of the opportunities net-zero homes can offer builders.

Although the New American Home is expected to be listed for US$2.5 million, Blue Heron says it can build similar, equally efficient but smaller “net-zero electricity homes for about $700,000”.

The article goes on to outline some of the features of a net zero home, including:

  • A rooftop solar system to reduce dependency on grid electricity and potentially receive credit for excess electricity generated by the system
  • Spray-on foam insulation to reduce heat transfer and reduce unwanted air infiltration
  • Energy-efficient doors, windows, lighting and appliances
  • High-performance heating and ventilation systems

However, not all builders agree that net zero homes are currently viable for the mass market. While cost can be a factor in the United States,
Southeast Asia's tropical climate presents other challenges; heat and humidity require different solutions to extremes of heat and cold like you find in the American southwest.

Air-conditioning alone is not an environmentally sustainable solution because of the enormous amount of greenhouse gases required to run air-conditioning units, especially in a large home.

A properly cross-ventilated home can reduce the need for air-conditioning usage. This, combined with shading devices to prevent heat transference, can significantly reduce dependence on air conditioning. When air conditioning is needed, solar power can also be used as an alternative energy source.

    Net-Zero Living in Malaysia

Malaysia has achieved much in the green building landscape so far, as seen in the example of Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (one of the world’s first net-zero office buildings) and the Diamond Building (Winning of the ASEAN energy award in 2012).

Although net-zero residential developments are progressing relatively slowly in Malaysia, one interesting project is Shelter@Rainforest, a self-sustainable, zero-energy longhouse built as a family home in Sabah, Malaysia.

The home includes a rooftop photovoltaic system and biogas units to provide energy for the running of the home, while rainwater collection units collects rainwater that is stored in cisterns which allows for basic water-related household functions.

A large overhanging shade roof helps keep the home 8-10 degrees Celcius cooler than the outside environment, and natural ventilation is encouraged through sliding doors with slats.

Government efforts to encourage net-zero building in Malaysia

The Malaysian government is also doing its part to encourage net-zero living. The Sustainable Energy Development Authority ( SEDA) has approved over 2,700 applications for the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) since its introduction in 2011.

Also called the Clean Energy Cash Back scheme, the FiT scheme allows homeowners who install solar-power systems to receive money for energy generated by their solar-photovoltaic systems.

From North America to Southeast Asia, the world is growing increasingly aware of the vital importance of finding a solution to global warming. Net-zero homes can be a part of that solution.

Fuji Xerox Launches the World’s First Optical System for Simultaneously Transmitting 4K Video, Audio and LAN Communications Data

    0
    0
    Apr 08, 2015

SINGAPORE, April 8, 2015 – Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of the 4K HDMI/IP Optical Transmission System, the world’s first system*1 enabling simultaneous transmission of 4K video, audio and 1000 BASE-T local area network (LAN) communications data over distances as long as 800 meters. Sales will begin in Japan on May 15.

Applying its proprietary surface-emitting semiconductor laser technology called VCSEL*2, which was originally developed for color multifunction printers, Fuji Xerox has realized the 800-meter simultaneous transmission of 4K video, audio, and LAN communications data through a fiber-optic data transmission technology.

Since 4K resolution is four times that of full high definition (full HD, or so-called 2K) and contains large volumes of data, the difficulty was in transmitting that volume over a long distance. Also, delays in transmission would occur if 4K video data with 30 frames per second were to be compressed. To meet these challenges, the 4K HDMI/IP Optical Transmission System converts high-resolution video data into optical signals without compressing it and transfers the data over a single optical cable, offering the capacity to transmit 4K video data without a single frame of delay.

Further, the 4K HDMI/IP Optical Transmission System is designed to meet the expected growing demand for optical video transmission equipment that can simplify the construction of high-resolution video systems because the ability to simultaneously support video, audio and LAN data reduces the cost of separate wiring for data transmission over LAN.

If used for touch panel digital signage, for example, the 4K HDMI/IP Optical Transmission System can send and receive 4K video data along with touch panel control signals via LAN, which would enable interactive video communication, serving as a novel solution that opens up new possibilities for video communication.

Potential applications include digital signage at train stations and airports or along streets, monitoring systems within factories, tablet-based active learning at educational institutions, surgical video sharing within hospitals, and many other scenes of communication.
With its advanced technologies, Fuji Xerox will continue to provide world-class solutions for new ways of communicating.

*1: The world’s first 4K HDMI certified equipment that can transmit HDMI signals over distances of 800 meters while supporting LAN (1000BASE-T) communications (as of March 31, 2015, based on survey by Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.).

*2: Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser

    165 Years Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum

    0
    0
    Apr 10, 2015
    Picture:

It is not without reason that Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum can be seen as the pioneer of vacuum technology: For 165 years, the company Leybold, located at Cologne, Germany, has developed and supplied vacuum pumps, systems, standardized and customized vacuum solutions and after sales services for a wide range of industrial and research-based applications.

In these fields of industry, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum offers low, medium, high- and ultrahigh vacuum pumps, vacuum systems, measuring gauges and instruments, leak detectors, valves and fittings, as well as consulting and engineering for complete vacuum solutions with a broad portfolio for specific customer applications.

    Heritage for Innovative Development
The foundation stone was laid in 1850: In this year, the company’s founder Ernst Leybold officially took over this enterprise as his own, paving the way for a comprehensive industrial use of vacuum technology. Even after selling the company again in 1970, his vision remained. One of the most important mile stones in the company’s history is the development of the molecular pump by physicist Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gaede.

    100 Years Diffusion Pumps
The name of the physicist is also relevant for another very successful pumping type, still being used in effective applications: for 100 years, the diffusion pump has been almost irreplaceable for many high-vacuum processes. With this principle, mixing of the jet and the gas to be evacuated is effected by diffusion of the gas into the jet stream. Modernization of diffusion pumps offer a high potential for energy saving, as in metallurgical applications of vacuum furnaces.

80 Years Rotary Vane Pump TRIVAC B
The success story of the oil sealed rotary vane pump TRIVAC B started 80 years ago. These general purpose pumps are used in a high variety of vacuum technology applications and are proving their efficiency in industrial production as well as in research, generating pressures in the low and medium vacuum range, as well as backing pumps in combination with other types such as Roots pumps, diffusion pumps, turbo-molecular pumps or cryo pumps.

In the TRIVAC pump series, operating according to the rotary vane principle, the oil in the pumping chamber serves as sealing, lubrication and cooling. An advantage of the pump is the easy handling of disassembling and assembling. Applications for these models are found mainly where increased performance and a wide range of accessories are required.

25 Years of Oerlikon Leybold Dresden
Not only Leybold Headquarters is celebrating an anniversary: Since 1990 the Dresden location of Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum is integrated into the high technology field of applications with innovative cryo technology. Well-renowned semiconductor companies and research institutes such as the Fraunhofer, Helmholtz- and Leibnitz-Institutes stem from the Silicon Saxony area. As almost every research and industrial area uses vacuum today, the customer proximity of Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum is a decisive advantage – the more as Dresden is the pivot point and center of competence for European after sales services for the entire vacuum pumps range. Major applications of cryogenic technology include aerospace, where rocket elements, satellites, space shuttle items or space station parts are tested in large space simulation chambers.

„Due to this positive development and long standing expertise, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum disposes of the most elaborated technological know-how of application and processes“, explains Dr. Martin Füllenbach, CEO Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum. „As pioneers of vacuum technology for Process Industry, Coating applications, Analytical methods and applications in Research and Development, we belong to the three largest suppliers in the world. We are proud to assist our customers as specialist already in the early consulting phases of new applications and processes. With our ample after sales services and our local footprint we consider ourselves as reliable partners for our customers”.

The specialists are needed when it comes to the development of application and customer specific systems for vacuum generation and processing gas management. The 165-year-long success story of the company will certainly be expanded by further chapters.

Interior Lifestyle China 2015 to take place in September

    Apr 10, 2015
    Picture:

Dates for China’s leading and most international trade event for household products and accessories – Interior Lifestyle China – have been confirmed, with the fair to take place from 17 – 19 September 2015 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Last year’s event saw the largest turnout of buyers in the fair’s history, with 21,773 visitors from 60 countries and regions attending – a 28 percent increase on the previous year.

According to Ms Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, this growth in the visitor figure confirms the huge potential in the domestic market. “Interior Lifestyle China is the country’s only fair that targets the mid-range and high-end sectors of the market, and such large growth in buyers proves that current demand in these areas is very strong. What’s more, all the economic indicators point to this continuing in 2015 and beyond.”

The high-end of the Chinese market is also where overseas brands can have a real impact, as underscored by one of last year’s exhibitors. “We’ve had around four times more growth in China than we expected,” explained Anthony Anderson, International Sales Director of German cookware supplier WOLL. “We’re growing very fast and this is our biggest growth market, and the high-end market here will continue to grow for sure.”

Consumer goods market in China experiencing huge growth

As China’s middle and upper classes continue to expand, retail sales of consumer goods are growing at an exceptionally fast pace. Sales in the first half of 2014 grew by 12.1 percent, and with a reported 642 million Internet users in the country last year, online retail sales expanded by a staggering 48.3 percent from January to June 2014.

Gift, home accessories and household products sectors show much promise

China’s gift industry continues to remain an important part of the economy. Annual sales in this market equate to around USD 123 billion, of which individuals account for 66 percent and organisations 34 percent. In 2014, a report by the Beijing Institute of Industry Information identified a number of trends in China’s gift market. Among these was the rising importance of green or eco-friendly gifts as consumers become more concerned about product safety. Another trend noted was that of joint marketing to target the promotional gift sector, where a gift producer partners with another enterprise that then offers a gift to consumers purchasing its products. Artistic gifts were also mentioned in the report, with cultural characteristics, artistic value and the brand of the gift starting to become important to Chinese consumers.

Meanwhile, China’s home accessories market is taking off as home renovations become more commonplace and consumers strive for a better quality of life at home. Unlike in the past, consumers are now willing to spend more on home accessories including furnishings, textiles, collectibles, lighting, and flower and plant decorations. A 2013 ChinaIRN.com study stated that consumers are beginning to focus on the functionality of home accessories as well as how they look. The study also mentioned the importance of eco-friendliness, as well as the trend towards natural-looking products, such as those made of timber, wicker, reed and bamboo. Lastly it emphasised the significance of brands in this sector, and noted that popular fashion brands are now expanding into home accessories, and that this is resonating well with consumers.

The household products market in China is going through a number of changes, with the Research Center for Direct Selling reporting a shift from conventional products to personalised products, from foreign-led investment to joint ventures, from a focus on urban areas to a balance between urban and rural, from traditional sales channels to multi-channels, and from a regional market focus to the national market. Furthermore, according to PRnews.cn, creative household items, which include items such as hardware, electronics, home appliances and gifts, have a lot of potential in China, particularly online.

Interior Lifestyle China 2015 is organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd. For more information about the fair, please visit www.il-china.com.

The number of exhibitors at the five trade shows rose about 4 percent from a year earlier to 1,401 firms from Taiwan and abroad, while the number of booths also rose 4 percent year-on-year to 3,816.

Amid rising interest in the Taipei AMPA and the four other trade fairs, both the exhibitor and booth figures for the 2015 show hit record highs.

Among the 1,401 exhibitors, a total of 205 came from abroad, adding that several foreign countries such as China, Thailand and Malaysia have set up special pavilions.

According to the Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association, exports of Taiwan-made auto parts for 2014 totaled US$6.64 billion, up 4.96 percent from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association said that the association will organize delegations to visit Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran and China later in the year to seek business opportunities overseas.

Taiwanese suppliers to benefit from Beijing-led initiatives

As China's "One Belt, One Road" strategy and its Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank initiative gather steam, Taiwanese companies are likely to benefit from the immense surge in construction projects anticipated throughout Asia, according to Taiwan-based institutional investors.

The Asia Development Bank has estimated that annual demand for capital to fund basic infrastructure investment among governments in Asia will reach US$730 billion by 2020.

China International Capital Corp., the largest investment banking and research firm in China, said it anticipates that Beijing will pour more than US$1.65 trillion into its "one belt, one road" strategy over the next decade, much of which will flow to neighboring nations in Asia.

Meanwhile, the prospects of Taiwanese companies such as Asia Vital Components Co., and Power Mate Technology Co. have risen in the eyes of investors as they are deemed to be companies well-positioned to reap rewards as the Beijing-led initiatives take shape.

Taiwan's Asia Vital Components Co., a thermal solution provider in 2011 acquired a 45 percent stake in a subsidiary company formed with China's China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corp. Local institutional investors are expecting the company to benefit from expected growth in demand for high-margin railway heat dissipation and electrical products including power resisters, water-cooled transformers and rackable connectors.

Power Mate Technology Co., a power supply company, secured a role in China's railroad equipment supply chain in 2010 after its electronic equipment products received EN 50155 standard certification for railway applications. Since its founding, Power Mate's products have been used in a number of demanding industrial applications including medical, weaponry, solar power and automobiles. The company is an original design manufacturer, and markets products under the brand name P-Duke.

    Picture:

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - With lower taxes as a result of Free Trade Agreements (FTA) Vietnam inked with Australia, Chile, China, India, Japan and Korea, imports of industrial machinery and manufacturing equipment to Vietnam is expected to rise in 2015.

In January 2015, Vietnam's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) increased about 67 per cent to US$663 million from the same period last year. A total of 44 FDI projects were registered, with 19 new projects breaking ground in the same month. One of the investment sectors identified was manufacturing, which attracted about US$605 million.

As more foreign companies look to tap on Vietnam as an export production base, the local community as a consequence is spurred to accelerate its move up the value chain by upgrading current production capabilities with high end technologies.

"Vietnam's manufacturing industry has transformed and expanded in recent years due to opportunities presented as a result of its healthy labour pool and flow of foreign investment. Now, there is a rise in demand for high quality manufacturing tools and solutions which can help local companies increase their productivity and reduce cost in order to stay ahead of the evolving business climate, says Mr. William Lim, Project Director for MTA VIETNAM from the show's organiser, Singapore Exhibition Services.

"MTA VIETNAM is specifically tailored to meet this critical demand, by providing manufacturing professionals in Vietnam an established business platform to source for the latest technologies and best-selling products available in the global marketplace. In addition, the event also offers value-added seminars for the industry to discuss pertinent issues, trends and developments," he adds.

MTA VIETNAM2015: Showcase of advanced manufacturing solutions from around the world

Since 2005, MTA VIETNAM has played a pivotal role in bridging the international manufacturing industry and Vietnam market. The 2015 edition is expected to open with more than 280 international and local companies from 19 countries and regions, including 11 international groups from Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

An impressive number of industry's biggest international brands have confirmed their return to MTA VIETNAM to bring forth a myriad of manufacturing equipment and supplies that meet the critical needs of the local manufacturing players. They include Amada, Bystronic, Carl Zeiss, DMG MORI, Dine, Haas, Hurco, Guehring, Mazak, Mitutoyo, Mori, Nikon, Sandvik, Sodick, Studer, TRUMPF and many more.

Positive feedback from participants a clear sign of MTA VIETNAM's strong relevance

Many exhibitors were impressed with the progress made by the manufacturing industry. Remarking on last year's show, Dr Hans-Peter Laubscher, Managing Director-Asia Pacific of TRUMPF Pte Ltd said, "As Vietnam has moved towards the production of high quality and competitive products for both domestic and international markets, factories here are embracing advanced technology which is very necessary to achieve this. MTA VIETNAM - as the key technology platform in Vietnam - plays an important role in this. I am very pleased that the industry recognises our strong technology. The quality of the enquiries we have received so far has been excellent."

Visitors were impressed with the level of knowledge and technologies presented.

"MTA VIETNAM is a must-attend event of our company. We came to source for grinding stones and welding machines, and found many suppliers whose products are suitable to our manufacturing such as Hydro-tek (compressing equipment) and Guhring. We also made many new contacts from the exhibition. We will definitely be back for the next edition," said Mr. Le Nguyen Hoa, Purchasing Manager from An Lac Car Mechanics Factory.

Another repeat visitor, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Trung, Chief of Technical Department from Juki Vietnam commented, "Juki Vietnam is a repeat visitor to MTA VIETNAM. The exhibition is very diversified and has showcases of many machines that are suitable to our business. We usually purchase machines and equipment from Japan and CNC machines from USA. We will come back for the next show."

MTA VIETNAM2014 saw more than 11,000 trade attendees comprising of visitors, exhibiting staff, members of the press, seminar speakers and delegates. This included 295 group delegations encompassing more than 1,322 group visitors.
