Third Southeast Asian Film Financing Project Market reveals shortlist

SINGAPORE - (ACN Newswire) - ScreenSingapore, together with the Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA), has announced the full slate of film dignitaries who will be speaking at the Southeast Asian Film Financing (SAFF) Conference. The third edition of the SAFF Project Market also released its shortlist, with 15 projects from across Southeast Asia.

"For seven years now, ScreenSingapore has been a key Southeast Asian platform that gathers the global industry's best minds, for power-packed conference sessions that deliver actionable insights about the dynamic film landscape. We are deeply appreciative of partners like SAAVA and Ties That Bind: Asia/Europe Producers Workshops (TTB) that have joined hands with us to groom the next generation of Southeast Asian filmmakers. We certainly look forward to bringing more stories from the region, to the world," said Yeow Hui Ling, Senior Project Director of ScreenSingapore and Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF), Reed Exhibitions.

Justin Deimen, Executive Director of SAAVA and Managing Partner of the Aurora Global Media Capital fund added, "As we march onto our third edition, we continue to view the positive impact of our SAFF Project Market and Conference within the regional filmmaking community and the network it creates for financiers, producers, and the rest of the ecosystem. The selection of projects and filmmakers we have this year at the SAFF Project Market is world-class and points to a deep pool of talent in Southeast Asia that will be showcased to international investors.

"With Indonesia as our Country of Focus this year, we're excited to create more inter-regional co-production opportunities with a marketplace of tremendous potential. The high-level SAFF Conference is put together with the focus on training producers in the importance of utilising new financing strategies available in our region to create global content through international co-productions and understanding what the market is looking for in the coming year."

- SAFF Conference - New Independent: Producing for a Globalised Film Economy -

On 1 December 2017, a contingent of film and media financing experts from around the world will address present-day opportunities and trends in content producing in Southeast Asia, including the new models of co-productions, new media business models, the rise of the Indonesian film economy, creating marketing and sales strategies for Indie filmmaking, and the art of nurturing local IPs into global franchises.

Amongst these are heavyweights Kurt Rieder, Executive Vice President (APAC) of 20th Century Fox and Martin McCourt, Investment Head at London Pacific Finance. At the keynote panel, "Bringing a Local IP into the Global State", they will discuss how to nurture localised IPs and stories, and prime them to go global, in their experience as successful producers and studio executives.

The panel "Europe & Asia: An Insight into Co-Productions" will kick off the day, where producers from Asia and Europe will discuss co-production opportunities and case studies, discussing practical steps in structuring a co-production through the mixture of different kinds of monies and production considerations. Amongst the speakers are Chan Gin Kai, the President of SAAVA and one of the region's most sought-after film financing and co-production experts, and Jonas Weydemann, a prolific German producer, the national coordinator for the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) and member of the European Film Academy.

The next panel puts a spotlight on Indonesia, ScreenSingapore's Country of Focus this year. It will look at the country's Goldilocks formula of having the right demographics, a budding digital and brick-and-mortar infrastructure, as well as a maturing audience and filmmaking base. One of the country's most respected filmmakers, Ifa Isfansyah of Fourcolours Films will be discussing his first-hand experiences together with Krishnan Rajagopalan, the co-founder of HOOQ and CEO of Whacked Out Media.

Marketing and film festival experts such as Sreyashi Sen, Founder of Darpan Singapore and Benjamin Illos, Programmer of the Cannes Directors' Fortnight together with Marco Mueller, Creative Festival Director of the Pingyao International Film Festival will discuss how independent filmmakers can create marketing buzz and secure distribution in this new brave new world. Celluloid Junkie's Editor-in-Chief, Patrick von Sychowski will moderate.

And true to its nature, the SAFF Conference will present "Meet the Financiers", a session that will answer the important questions that producers have for investors and distributors. The panel will include Jeremy Sim, Managing Partner of Aurora Global Media Capital and Dhruv Sinha, Head (Hollywood & Overseas Business) for RELIANCE Entertainment. Continuing the themes of establishing business fundamentals in the creative industries, other sessions include "Sourcing for New Business Models in Media Financing".

- SAFF Project Market 2017 shortlist announced -

Following two successful editions, the third SAFF Project Market has released its shortlist of promising feature-length projects that will have a shot at financing, distribution and collaboration opportunities to bring these films to fruition. This pitching competition and launch pad for filmmakers from the region is a partnership between ScreenSingapore, SAAVA and TTB.

From a large number of submissions from various Southeast Asian countries, an esteemed panel of judges identified 15 finalists from Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore (in collaboration with producers from India and Mauritius) and Thailand. International Surrealism Now 2017/18 Art Exhibition to be Held in Portugal

Nov 21, 2017

Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro finds new and unusual avenues to showcase his art and promote the international art exhibit

In an attempt to take art to the people en masse – and promote the largest group exhibit of surreal art this winter -- Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro is teasing the public with flash images of his work in the most famous intersection of the world: Times Square.

Ribeiro’s vivid, colorful paintings will be shown sporadically – flashed on random days at random times -- on the Nasdaq OMX Group screen in New York City until Dec. 31, 2017. They will be up for three whole minutes on the Reuter’s screen for each appearance – ample time for tens of thousands of pedestrians to catch a glimpse.

The pieces are part of the International Surrealism Now exhibit, which is to open at the multimedia POROS Museum in Condeixa-a-Nova this October. Billed as the largest world exhibition of contemporary Surrealism art in Europe – with more than 100 artists from 48 countries participating – the exhibit of paintings, drawings, digital art, photographs and sculpture is also expected to be shown, at least in part, at several monuments and public spaces throughout Portugal.

“As always I´m doing something different and the idea to exhibit in Times Square in New York shows how the mass media are our modern means to show our art,” Ribeiro said.

Ribeiro’s work has been featured at the U.S. embassy in Lisbon, in the Portuguese American Journal, in Digital Meets Culture, Praad in Portuguese and many other publications. His sponsors include Bissaya Barreto Foundation, Condeixa a Nova House Mayor and MagicCraftsman Studio.

He conceived the International Surrealism Now movement in 2010 in Coimbra with a major exhibit organized by Bissaya Barreto.

Note for the international tourists:
Visit Portugal as a tourist for International Surrealism Now. It’s one of the safest places in the world --without terrorism, without violence, without weapons. There are no hurricanes and cyclones, only good food and wine (vinho tinto), wonderful places and weather, the sea and mountains, the monuments and city ruins from the Stone Age to the Roman Empire; from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance; maritime discoveries; from the Classic to the Modern.

Madrid, 21 November 2017 --( ASIA TODAY )-- The digital transformation of the tourism industry will be at the centre of the 6th staging of Fitur Know-How & Export, an initiative organised by SEGITTUR and FITUR in collaboration with ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, seeking to drive forward the exportation of Spanish tourism knowledge.

Fitur Know-How & Export, which will be staged as part of FITUR 2018 from 17 to 19 January 2018, will occupy a 1,600 m2 exhibition space in Hall 10 of Feria de Madrid, where a smart tourist destination will be simulated in which technologies associated with digital transformation will take centre stage.

This area will also feature 40 exhibitor companies with innovative solutions for tourism in all its facets – hotel management, strategic consultancy, promotion, marketing, new products and services, etc.

This initiative seeks to support the internationalisation of Spanish tourism companies, which have the opportunity to showcase their potential and announce their innovative services and products to other international markets.

Novelties
One of the main novelties at this staging is the creation of two spaces, one devoted to showing how virtual reality can help the tourism industry, where visitors can enjoy first-hand the experience of travelling before the actual trip through different solutions.

The second space –the Start-up Area- will be devoted to giving visibility to tourism projects in which new technologies are crucial, developed by start-ups which go hand in hand with the major accelerators.

SEGITTURLab, ideas laboratory
In addition, and given the success of the first staging, we will again feature SEGITTURLab, an ideas laboratory where various practical workshops will be held for tourism entrepreneurs and professionals. Maximum capacity will be for 20 people with prior registration.

Among the workshops due to be held are “Blockchain applied to tourism”; “The digital tourist’s customer journey”; “Virtual reality” or “Chatbot applications in tourism”.

We will also have a personalised advisory service with multilateral bodies thanks to the collaboration of ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, which will also participate in the auditorium in the Smart Talks devoted to supporting the internationalisation of Spanish tourism companies.

Smart Talks
As part of the Smart Talks programme we will analyse different aspects associated with digital transformation, discussing from chatbots to cybersecurity and from blockchains to virtual reality. We will also discuss different aspects to do with the development of smart tourist destinations and the tourism intelligence system.

Lastly we will present success cases of tourism entrepreneurs drawn from the different calls in the Emprendetur financing line. There will also be a session devoted to explaining how a start-up can be accepted by an accelerator.

During Fitur Know-how & Export we will present the Tourist App Guide 2018 and award the prizes of “The AppTourism Awards 2018”, organised jointly by SEGITTUR and FITUR.

According to numbers published by the Organic Trade Association, the estimate size for total organic market consumer sales for organic products in the UAE totals AED154Mil per year, making it the 38th largest market in the world.

On top of this, an increase in consumption of health and wellness products (6.6% CAGR), organic packaged food and beverages (9.8% CAGR), and organic packaged food consumption (9.8% CAGR) was predicted from the years 2015-2018, signalling a shift in consumer behaviour towards health-orientated foods.

Aiming to provide an ideal platform for local and international food manufacturers looking to expand into the lucrative industry of organic food products, SIAL Middle East will run from 12-14 December at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, and held in a strategic partnership with the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), as part of the Abu Dhabi Food Festival and organized by the department of Culture and Tourism.

Recognising SIAL ME’s status as an expanding hub for industry professionals, Mawasim Organic, are set to showcase their full range of organic products.

Abdulnasser Alshamsi, CEO for Mawasim Organic said, “SIAL Middle East has provided a strong platform for the growing food, beverage and hospitality event in the MENA region, and we are looking forward to showcasing our organic fresh local farm produce from fruits, vegetables and herbs such as: sweet corn, cucumber, potato and mint.

Additionally, Mawasim Organic has a wide section of certified organic products such as cheese and dairy, butchery, bakery, grocery to health & beauty products.

“Mawasim has rapidly grown into a trusted local Emirati brand, carrying locally grown organic produce, harvested at Al Rawafed Organic Agricultural farm,” added Alshamsi.

For New Zealand based Blossom Hill Farm, halal products and superfoods will take centre-stage.

Mark Allport Founder of Blossom Hill Farm said, “Blossom Hill farm is inspired by four generations of New Zealand family farming, and we represent a range of beautiful artisan farm produce and Halal certified products. Also, we will have an exciting new range of beverages from New Zealand as well as some new combinations of Superfood NutSpreads.”

With more than 40 million date palms in the UAE, and with the fruit largely considered a superfood due to its high sources of energy, fibre and vitamins, many suppliers are keen to show-off their products at Abu Dhabi Date Palm Exhibition, the only event in the world dedicated for the date palm industry, which will be co-located with SIAL Middle East. This year’s edition will be the first to allow on-site sales.

Capitalising on the popularity and high consumption of the medjool date in the Middle East, USA firm Double Date Packing is taking part in SIAL Middle East for the first time. “The event is known to have a high concentration of procurement professionals,” said Hope Barbee from Double Date.

“This will be our first ever trade show outside of the USA and we hope to raise the bar on the quality of the majdool date currently in the market. We offer the highest quality of whole majdool dates in a variety of consumer packages and we remain committed to delivering our customers the very best.”

Jenaan Investment, an agricultural investment company, are also looking to enter the healthy and free range market. Based in the country's capital, Abu Dhabi, SIAL Middle East will provide the perfect platform to showcase Jenaan’s new projects, partnerships as well as announcing new initiatives.

Additionally, Jenaan plans to sign new agreements and expand their international network, and will work closely with the Abu Dhabi government to support the emirate's food security programme agenda, and has recently implemented a large date palm plantation in Egypt. They also plan to launch a new animal services business for local farmers at SIAL Middle East.

The eighth edition of SIAL Middle East, co-located with the Abu Dhabi Date Palm Exhibition, will host more than 22,000 industry professionals and 900 exhibitors this year.

SIAL Middle East returns with support from Host Sponsor: Abu Dhabi Chamber, Diamond Sponsor: Jenaan Investments, Silver Sponsors: Al Rawafed and Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre, Bronze Sponsor: Mai Dubai and The Deep Seafood Company, and Halal Certification Sponsor: Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology.

We Have the Tools to Fight Climate Change. It’s Time to Start Using Them

0
0
Nov 28, 2017
Picture:

The threat of climate change is dire but seems difficult to fight. However, the tools to fight it have long been in our hands and we really need to start using them.

Stepping in to the COP23 climate talks in Bonn, Germany, is like wandering through an alternative reality. At no point in these vast cavernous rooms are you confronted with the sheer urgency or the scale of transformation required to reduce the risk of a fossil-fueled catastrophe.

Meanwhile, back on Earth the Global Carbon Project announced on Monday that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels are expected to grow approximately 2% this year. This comes as startling news after three years of virtually no growth in global emissions.

Two years after nations signed the historic Paris Agreement, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising faster than expected and the international community lacks essential leadership to tackle this crisis. The US, the world’s largest economy and second largest emitter, is rolling back on regulations that will curb emissions and save lives by reducing air pollution. China’s emissions, by far the world’s largest, are expected to rise 3.5%, despite heavy investment in clean energy.

These trends are concerning. But what is most alarming is that we continue down this treacherous path despite having the scientific and technological tools needed to transform humanity to a healthy and prosperous society.

Tipping Points

How do we bridge the growing chasm between the geopolitical world and the geophysical world, commonly known as Earth? To put the current negotiations in context, we have just published a 10-point statement to walk through the narrative of this latest chapter in human history.

Evidence from many lines of inquiry shows Earth has entered a new geologic epoch —called the Anthropocene. The rate of change in the Earth's system is accelerating as a result of our impact on the planet’s biology, chemistry, and physics. Earth’s climate has been remarkably stable since before the dawn of civilization. This stability is at risk.

The worry is that Earth is approaching critical “tipping points”. By crossing these thresholds, the planet may see abrupt, and possibly irreversible, shifts in the workings of the Amazon rainforest, ocean currents and El Nino.

The record-breaking 2017 Atlantic hurricane season provides a glimpse at the increased risks of extreme weather events that the planet may experience in the future. These events include severe flooding, heat waves and droughts.

Changes are occurring quickly in the ocean, with accelerating sea-level rise and ocean acidification. The economic costs of climate change are already being felt, and the some of the world’s poorest nations are bearing the heaviest burden. Climate change will have a profound impact on human health by placing new pressures on the food and water security in nations around the world.

It is also likely to exacerbate migration, civil unrest and even conflict. In 2015, more than 19 million people globally were displaced by natural disasters and extreme weather events, and climate change will likely cause that number to grow.

The world needs to act fast: if humans continue to emit greenhouse gases at current rates, the remaining carbon budget to reduce risk of exceeding the 2°C target will be exhausted in around 20 years. Emissions should peak by 2020 and approach zero by around 2050 if the world is serious about reducing risk.

This golden rule is a road-map to prosperity. A fossil-fuel free society is economically attractive: renewable energy sources increasingly compete with fossil fuels, even when these are priced at historic lows. Moreover, the estimated costs of inaction range from 2-10% of GDP by 2100 by some estimates, to a final invoice equivalent to a 23% collapse in global productivity.

And there is a simple shortcut to the roadmap to global prosperity. Do you want to know the secret? Put a price on carbon and remove perverse subsidies for fossil fuels which the International Monetary Fund estimates cost the global economy a staggering $5 trillion a year.

The extreme events that beset Puerto Rico, Portugal, Houston and Bangladesh in recent months show that even if the world meets the Paris Agreement targets, communities across the globe will still need to build resilience and adapt to the changes already under way.

The world can afford to become free of fossil fuels. It cannot afford to fail. We have the tools to do the job. All we need is the political will and the right road-map.

Simultaneously lubricating, cooling and cleaning with CO2snow Marked increase in productivity of machining processes

0
0
Nov 28, 2017
Picture:

By using CO2 as a process coolant, the cost-efficiency of machining can be significantly improved. With its quattroClean system, acp has developed a solution suitable for use in serial productions. Among other things, it increases productivity by around a third when machining workpieces made from PEEK and aluminum. A further advantage is that components and machines stay much cleaner.

In recent years, the use of CO2 as a coolant for machining processes has become much more popular as an alternative to conventional cooling lubricant concepts. One of the reasons for this is the higher rate of material removal, which increases productivity and also reduces tool wear and the associated downtimes. The so-called cryogenic cooling method with carbon dioxide therefore decreases production costs. With its quattroClean snow jet technology, acp – advanced clean production GmbH offers a cooling system that has proved its worth in serial productions. It can also be integrated into CNC machines and machining centers at a later stage.

Reliable cooling thanks to non-wearing circular two-component nozzle
The quattroClean system works with liquid carbon dioxide, which is generated as a by-product from chemical processes as well as from the generation of energy from biomass, thus making it environmentally neutral. It is transported at room temperature to the non-wearing circular two-component nozzle. The CO2 only transforms from a liquid to a solid state in the form of fine snow crystals as it leaves the nozzle. The crystals are then bundled by a circular jacketed jet of compressed air and advanced to the process zone at supersonic speed. The temperature of the medium at this point can be as low as 78 °C. On the one hand, the patented technology with the jacketed jet ensures a constant pressure and consistently good cooling results. On the other hand, only the quantity of carbon dioxide needed for the desired cooling effect is supplied.

Dry, residue-free machining
The fact that solid-state carbon dioxide sublimates at room temperature makes this a dry process. Consequently, chips are clean and dry as well as fully recyclable. Dry machining also means that workpieces and machines stay much cleaner. In many cases, there is no further need to clean workpieces after processing. Depending on cleaning requirements, a cleaning module can be integrated quickly and efficiently downstream of the machining process. A further advantage of cooling with CO2 is that parts, for example for medical products, are machined free of contamination. The low temperature also minimizes the risk of a workpiece deforming. Finally, no costs are incurred either for maintenance, care or the disposal of cooling lubricants.

External cooling prevents icing up and facilitates retrofitting
In contrast with other solutions, cooling takes place externally with the quattroClean system rather than through the tool. The non-abrasive and non-toxic jet of snow and compressed air is easy to focus and can be directed exactly where it is needed in the defined process zone around the cutting edge, chips and tool. For this, the CO2 nozzle “travels” with the tool.

Among other applications, the quattroClean system is used in serial productions to lubricate, cool and simultaneously clean machined implants and medical components made from PEEK. Another serial application is in metal processing.
Here, the system is used to cool tools when machining parts made from aluminum. In both cases, productivity could be stepped up by over thirty percent by cooling with CO2 externally using the acp system.

Compact and targeted control
Thanks to its modular concept, the quattroClean system from acp can be easily adapted to customer demands and has a very small footprint. Process parameters, such as the volume flow for compressed air, or the quantity of carbon dioxide required, can be optimally adjusted to the application concerned.

The duration of the jet for both process parameters can also be modified separately. This high degree of flexibility enables the system to be used for completely new applications, as well as for applications which were unsuccessful with standard systems.

SMM Maritime Industry Report Sector sees light at the end of the tunnel

0

Nov 29, 2017
Picture:

For the first time in its history, Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH has conducted a large-scale study asking exhibitors and visitors of the leading global trade fair for the maritime industry to give their assessment of the sector’s economic and technological development. The SMM Maritime Industry Report shows that the industry is looking to the future with confidence, and reveals the key issues that are on everybody's mind.

Hamburg, November 29th 2017 --( ASIA TODAY )-- Reflecting the views of more than 2500 participants from 69 countries, many of whom hold senior positions in the maritime industry, the SMM Maritime Industry Report, prepared jointly by Hamburg Messe & Congress GmbH (HMC) as the organiser of SMM, and the market research institute mindline, presents a good impression of the prevailing sentiments in the industry. "Our first comprehensive industry survey is a great source of inspiration as we prepare for the next SMM in September 2018," says Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO, Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. While the maritime industry has gone through difficult times, it is now ready to tackle the future with a can-do spirit. "The results of the SMM Maritime Industry Report are a very valuable source of information for us in aligning the SMM itself and the accompanying conferences with the needs of the industry," the CEO of the Hamburg trade fair organisation points out. Nearly ten months before it opens its doors, SMM is almost fully booked. "This underscores the role of SMM as the world's leading industry fair, and it shows how much value companies assign to personal interaction, expert input and tangible technological progress, especially in turbulent times,” says Aufderheide.

Big response and top-flight participants
"We asked the exhibitors and visitors of SMM about the top items on their agendas, and how they gauge their economic perspectives," says Claus Ulrich Selbach, Business Unit Director – Maritime and Technology Fairs & Exhibitions at HMC. Respondents included representatives of shipowning companies, shipbuilders and suppliers from around the world. In addition to the economic and technological development the survey also addressed planned investments. “I haven’t heard of any other study covering the industry in such breadth,” said Hauke Schlegel, Managing Director of the Marine Equipment and Systems working group at the German engineering industry association VDMA. The participation profile is a representative cross-section of the entire industry:

• Roughly three quarters (74 per cent) of respondents were SMM visitors, and one fourth (24 per cent) were exhibitors.

• Nearly one fifth of respondents (19 per cent) work at a shipowning company, 13 per cent are employed by a shipyard, and the majority (67 per cent) work at a supplier.

• 72 per cent of respondents hold a senior position at their company, and approximately two thirds (65 per cent) make investment decisions, either alone or in a team.

Ship-owning companies plan to invest
For the first time a "Maritime Industry Score" was computed based on the outcome of the survey. This score reflects the business expectations of shipowning companies, shipyards and suppliers. “We want to hold regular business climate surveys in future to find out more about the mood in the industry," says Claus Ulrich Selbach. In the wake of an economic lull that has lasted nine years, the results of the current survey betray a certain basic optimism across the maritime sector, in spite of expectations of a continuing consolidation process. The overall Maritime Industry Score was 54.6 points, with the shipping segment's 33.2 points clearly lagging behind shipbuilding (47.1 points) and the supply industry (61.9 points). These figures represent the ratio of positive versus negative growth expectations. The surprisingly positive outcome proves that the industry is beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.

There are signs of hope even among shipowners. Some of the players clearly view the growth prospects as positive, indicating an increasing willingness to invest, as one particular survey result reveals: 20 per cent of responding decision-makers consider it as ‘very likely’, and an additional 12 per cent as ‘likely’ that they will order new ships within the next 12 months. "This is especially surprising considering the fact that this value is far above the typical fleet rejuvenation rate," comments Dr Max Johns, Managing Director of the German Shipowners Association VDR.

Strong interest in LNG
There is one particular field in the shipbuilding segment where the need to act is felt especially urgently: Following the entry into force of the Ballast Water Convention of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in early September 2017, 54 per cent of responding shipowner CEOs intend to retrofit their ships accordingly.

Stricter environmental regulations are also causing a stir in the ship propulsion segment. The industry is homing in on LNG as an alternative to conventional ship fuels. 44 per cent of respondents said LNG is their first choice when contemplating ship newbuilding orders. But hybrid solutions based on marine diesel are likewise popular. "There is no way around the energy transition in the maritime sector. The increasing number of newbuilding orders and retrofits shows that LNG is gaining ground. The future of low-emission shipping has long begun," says Dr Reinhard Lüken, General Manager, German Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Association (VSM). The supply industry agrees, with 49 per cent of respondents saying they consider LNG as the champion among alternative fuels.

Another item high up on the agenda is Autonomous Shipping: 36 per cent of shipowner executives believe it to be the future of merchant shipping. 90 per cent of those in support believe that the use of unmanned ships will be routine in as little as 20 years. "We have seen an enormous shift in public opinion here," says VDR managing director Johns. The two-decade horizon is not a far-fetched prospect, considering the average service life of a ship, he adds.

Study lends fresh impetus to SMM
The maritime sector is already showing great interest in remote monitoring of ships and ways to protect ships against cybercrime. "The opportunities and challenges of digitalisation are on everybody's mind in this industry. Therefore this topic will play a key role at SMM 2018, for example during the Maritime Future Summit," says Business Unit Director HMC Selbach. New technologies that can be helpful in optimising processes and increasing efficiency are in demand. Accordingly, 66 per cent of respondents from supply companies see a “high" or "very high" sales potential for their products in the market. Three out of four (74 per cent) have observed that innovative technology is being welcomed by customers. The responding suppliers believe that the German, Chinese and US markets have the highest growth potential. Overall nearly 70,000 global contacts where utilised in the online survey for the SMM MIR. More than 2500 respondents answered every single question. "This is a better response than what many comparable surveys have been able to achieve," says project lead Jörg Kunath from mindline. HMC plans to conduct the SMM Maritime Industry Report every two years in order to draw a continuous picture of the maritime industry mood.

About SMM
The leading international maritime trade fair takes place in Hamburg every two years. More than 2.200 exhibitors and roughly 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the trade fair in the famous port city from 4 to 7 September 2018. SMM covers all segments of the maritime value chain, bringing together decision-makers from around the world and highlighting innovative technology.

-- Inaugural year of collaboration reported over 16,000 lives impacted across ASEAN
-- Collaboration in 2018 to focus on pillars of education and entrepreneurship, with the aim of creating a sustainable future for ASEAN
-- Singapore will host ASEAN Data Science Explorers regional finals in 2018

SINGAPORE, Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The ASEAN Foundation and SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced the continuation of their strategic collaboration into 2018, following a successful collaboration in its first year to bring about social impact in ASEAN. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ASEAN Foundation and SAP, both organisations will jointly roll out initiatives under two strategic pillars next year, namely Education and Entrepreneurship.

The ASEAN Foundation and SAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend their collaboration in 2018. Present here are (L-R): His Excellency Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community; Mr. Claus Andresen, President and Managing Director of SAP Southeast Asia; Ms. Elaine Tan, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation and Mr. Eugene Ho, Head of Corporate Affairs, SAP Southeast Asia

The initiatives are aimed at equipping ASEAN youths with the skills they need to tackle society's problems and thrive in the digital economy; build the capacity of innovative social enterprises that put young people on the path to successful careers and build a skilled workforce for the IT sector with training and workforce development programmes.

The inaugural year of this collaboration yielded positive outcomes under the following pillars:

Education

The ASEAN Data Science Explorers competition attracted 804 participants from 112 institutions across the 10 ASEAN member states. In the lead-up to the competition, students were trained in SAP's Analytics Cloud software through a series of webinars and in-country seminars, with more than 600 students accessing the platform.

The competition solicited data-driven insights and ideas on the most pressing social issues in the region. Some highlights include the submission by Team "Omotesando" from Indonesia that aims to accelerate financial inclusion as a solution to poverty eradication through branchless banking, and the submission by Team "Tonkar Data" from Laos which proposes the adoption of smart and vertical farming in ASEAN to improve productivity in agriculture.
Volunteerism

The Youth Volunteering Innovation Challenge (YVIC), under the theme "Impact ASEAN", supported young volunteers throughout the ASEAN region in their journey to catalyze youth-led innovation for social impact and sustainable development by providing access to mentors and capital they need to start or scale up their projects.

29 young volunteer innovators from ten teams across ASEAN participated in the YVIC 2017 as part of a collaborative effort by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the ASEAN Foundation, the ASEAN Secretariat, SAP and with the close support of the Government of Germany.
Entrepreneurship

Under the collaboration, SAP supported 9 out of the Top 50 ASEAN social enterprises through two programmes namely the SAP Social Sabbatical and NUS Crossing the Chasm Challenge. SAP employees provided mentorship and consulting to help the enterprises run better.

"Through this synergetic collaboration, we have been able to leverage resources from both organizations to inspire ASEAN youths to actively participate in efforts towards driving a sustainable future for ASEAN. With digitization being the pivotal force in today's ASEAN economies, both the public and the private sector need to work together to impart digital skills to the young. SAP has been a strong supporter in making consistent effort to move the needle in this respect; we hope to continue to collaborate with them to prepare ASEAN's workforce for the future," said Elaine Tan, the Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation.

The MoU was first signed on May 9, 2017 at the ASEAN Foundation headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia. Since then, the ASEAN Foundation and SAP have been executing all the programmes under the three pillars.

"2017 has been a special year for the ASEAN community, with ASEAN turning 50 and the ASEAN Foundation celebrating its 20th anniversary. The community has come a long way and through this collaboration, SAP is proud to have been part of this journey to help ASEAN write the next chapter towards a more sustainable future," said Claus Andresen, President and Managing Director, SAP Southeast Asia. "Helping the world run better and improving people's lives is at the heart of everything we do at SAP and we are pleased with the outcomes of the collaboration in the first year. I am confident that the renewal of this collaboration will help scale our ambitious CSR programs to create even greater positive impact across the region."

Singapore's IMDA to Co-Host ASEAN Data Science Explorers 2018

In light of Singapore's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2018, the ASEAN Data Science Explorers 2018 regional finals will be held in Singapore, with Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) as a hosting partner.

The ASEAN Data Science Explorers targets tertiary students in all 10 ASEAN member states. It is designed to promote awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community amongst young people. Student participants are given access to ASEAN data as well as SAP Analytics Cloud platform, which allows them to better derive data-driven insights. In 2018, the programme aims to reach out to 5,000 youths across ASEAN, with the objective of training them in data and analytics skills.

"Singapore is pleased to host the ASEAN Data Science Explorers regional finals next year. It is one of the events that dovetails with the themes of Singapore's ASEAN Chairmanship, which will focus on Resilience and Innovation. By encouraging digital literacy among our youths, the ASEAN Data Science Explorers programme will support ASEAN's efforts to harness digital technologies to secure a better future for our citizens," said Ambassador Tan Hung Seng, Singapore Permanent Representative to ASEAN.

ICCROM 30th General Assembly launched today

Delegations of 135 countries meet in Rome to discuss sustainable approaches to the reconstruction of destroyed and damaged historic cities

Rome - Italy, 29 November 2017 - The 30th General Assembly of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) was inaugurated today in Rome. The three-day event, held from 29 November – 1 December, will feature panel discussions on productive and sustainable approaches to support the reconstruction of destroyed and damaged historic cities.
Delegations of ICCROM’s 135 Member States are gathered today to discuss and endorse the Rome-based agency’s strategic directions and work plan, and elect its governing Council. The General Assembly will also ratify the nomination of its next Director-General, nominated by the executive Council for a six-year period of leadership.

Representatives from both international and Italian organizations gave opening addresses at the official inauguration of the event. The speakers stressed the importance of enforcing and strengthening international collaboration in the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage and property, addressing current and future challenges. These include destruction of tangible cultural heritage and property in armed conflict, disaster risk management, illicit trafficking in heritage objects and new risks to intangible cultural heritage.

In his last participation as ICCROM’s Director-General, Dr Stefano De Caro thanked all Member States for their essential collaboration and support during his six-year mandate. “Thanks to the significant support of all Member States, and the full commitment and contribution of ICCROM’s professional team, we were together able to implement ICCROM’s programmes, with the aim to build capacities within the professional community for safeguarding irreplaceable heritage,” De Caro said.

Palmyra: Rising from Destruction, an exhibition sponsored by the Incontro di Civiltà Association

Following the official inauguration, an exhibition entitled “Palmyra: Rising from Destruction” was unveiled. The event is sponsored by the Incontro di Civiltà Association headed by Francesco Rutelli, former Italian Minister of Culture. The exhibition features two examples of heritage originating from Palmyra, Syria. The first, a replica of the Temple of Bel, has been brought back to life through state-of-the-art technology. The second, a funeral sculpture looted from Palmyra, was recovered in Italy by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and will be sent back to Syria when conditions permit.

The issue of post-conflict reconstruction raises the question of how the reconstruction process should move forward. “Once the conflict in Syria is over and security conditions on the ground allow it,” said Rutelli, “many issues will arise concerning the restoration of Palmyra and Aleppo to their former splendor.” He continued, “But this is not just a technical matter. It is a matter of choices, which should never result in restored sites resembling some artificial Disneyland.”

In Rutelli’s view, restoration and reconstruction efforts must thus be studied on a case-by-case basis, and carried out with great care following sound scientific evidence. In this regard, the political will of local authorities can be supported by international cooperation, but not overridden by impositions from the outside.

The Incontro di Civiltà Association is also currently sponsoring an exhibit of its reconstructed winged Bull of Nimrud at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, through November 2017.

ICCROM’s New Director-General
Dr Webber Ndoro has been confirmed by the General Assembly as the new Director-General, to lead ICCROM over the next six years. Ndoro completed a BA in History at the University of Zimbabwe in 1982, a Master of Philosophy in Archaeology in 1987 from Cambridge University, and a Master in Architectural Conservation from York University. His formal education was completed at Uppsala University where he obtained a PhD in Heritage Management in 2000.

Ndoro joined the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe in 1985. He served as Co-coordinator of its Monuments Programme from 1992 to 1994, and then moved to the University of Zimbabwe as lecturer on heritage management. He has also lectured on heritage management at the University of Bergen in Norway, as well as at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he is currently Associate Research Fellow.

Ndoro’s first involvement with ICCROM came in1998, when he was tasked with implementing one of the first three site projects for the AFRICA 2009 programme. From 2002, Ndoro worked as a full-time ICCROM staff member on AFRICA 2009, providing a very useful African perspective at ICCROM to the planning and implementation of the programme. He left ICCROM in 2007 to accept the position of Executive Director of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), a post which he has held until the present.

During his mandate, Ndoro has guided the AWHF to become one of the leading conservation organizations in the region, and has also raised a significant endowment. Under Ndoro’s leadership, AWHF has planned and implemented programmes and activities for heritage conservation aimed at improving World Heritage nominations, strengthening disaster risk management and traditional management systems, and promoting entrepreneurship related to heritage in the region.

Ndoro’s accomplishments in the field of heritage conservation have had a lasting impact on ICCROM as an organization, and on a generation of young heritage professionals in sub-Saharan Africa and worldwide. His new assignment will enrich ICCROM’s ties with Africa and with all world regions.

The General Assembly will continue tomorrow with administrative sessions and meetings. Additionally, a Thematic Discussion on “Post-Conflict Reconstruction – Recovery and Community Involvement” has been organized in collaboration with the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The event will underline the need for coordination between different development agencies on reconstruction issues, while engaging and supporting communities in respect for cultural diversity. The discussion will focus on examples and case studies from countries around the world, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, Lebanon, Mali, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Syria.

A related photography exhibition at the Egyptian Academy in Rome entitled “The Day After: Shadows of Heritage” will be unveiled tomorrow, bearing witness to the devastated cultural heritage of five countries in the Middle East – Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Syria and Yemen – by pairing before and after photographs to witness the scale of that destruction.

How To Manage Your Staff’s Expectations

0
0
Nov 30, 2017
Picture:

Managing a business, and your staff’s expectations is no easy task. Not only does the person have to take care of the business as a whole, he or she also has to make sure that the employed staff is giving their best too. In order to maintain the perfect working balance, the expectations of the staff need to be managed in a proper manner. A lot of times businesses face troubles because the expectations of the staff are not in line with what the boss wants. So, if you’re someone who wants to manage your staff’s expectations, then here are a few tips that you should follow in order to ensure that everything is able to work as smoothly as possible.

Invite Honesty

A lot of times employees are afraid to question the management. Even when their concerns are valid they tend to keep these concerns to themselves because they’re afraid of getting fired, etc. As a manager, you need to give rise to an environment that invites honesty. If a staff member is facing a problem with regards to the work, then he or she should be able to come up to the manager and share their problem. A business can’t run properly if the staff is feeling stressed, etc. That is why in order to run a good business the staff needs to be feeling well too. A sense of dread or fear regarding the boss isn’t going to help anyone.

Tell Them What Works

Many managers don’t communicate with their staff when something good is happening. They always go to them in order to share the bad news. If the staff doesn’t know that their performance is good then how can you expect them to keep doing work in the same manner? That is why it is important that you tell your staff when something is working, as well as tell them what needs to be changed. Communication is a very important tool in business and should always be your number one focus.

Be Clear

Always be clear when it comes to what you’re expecting from your staff. When making an announcement, there is a high chance that not every employee is able to understand what you mean. To make things easier, try and distribute handouts or other information to make sure that you and the staff are on the same page. This will help the business move in the direction that you want it to.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes expectations are not met and that is okay. As long as the staff is dedicated, you will make up for the expectations that haven’t been met at end of the week or month. Retaining your team and working well together keeps a business moving forward, so we need to be fair in our expectations of our staff.

My workshops can help lay the foundations for opening compunction and acknowledging that being courteous and thoughtful has proven to be a more effective way to win clients and customers and influence others. The competitive advantage depends on your ability to use your emotional intelligence and social graces to take your career to the next level.
