BEIJING, April 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- 2017 was the beginning of smart AI application. Amid a strong forthcoming tide of the fourth industrial revolution, AI is generating new momentum and use cases. It has been elevated to a national strategy and identified as a new engine for growth going forward. The number of AI startups continues to shoot up. Technological breakthroughs are being seen across different fields. All trends point to a booming AI industry, making it the most coveted entrepreneurial idea and the hottest investment theme.

To better advance the AI industry and assist entrepreneurs in jumping on the bandwagon of AI, the IEIC·Iterduo Smart Innovation Conference and Smart Innovation Award Ceremony featuring the theme of "AI in everything" was recently held in Beijing. CloudMinds, for its mass commercialization of AI in transforming and upgrading traditional sectors, received the annual Golden Ear Award and was named a Top 10 AI Firm with Highest Valuation in 2017.

The conference was organized by Iterduo, a leading Chinese media firm focusing on smart industries. Present at the event were some 50 opinion leaders, 100 media organizations and 1,000 partners and industry practitioners. Together they discussed the future of innovation, shared new insights and brought inspiration to the entrepreneurs still struggling in the vortex. The event made a big impression.

The voting for the 2017 Golden Ear Award went online between December 12, 2017 and January 7, 2018. Industry data evaluation and expert consideration took place from January 8-10. The award ceremony was held in conjunction with the Iterduo Smart Innovation Conference.

At the conference, Iterduo and Itjuzi jointly published the 2017 AI Industry Development Report to support innovative thinking with real data. Statistics show 353 AI investment deals were reported in 2017, among them 60.8% received a total investment of RMB 58.2 billion, a significant increase from RMB 35.2 billion in 2016. The report also indicates that AI is currently leap-frogging from "application-driven" to "business model-driven" and will likely face bottlenecks of "industry formation, product divide and market divide".

As the world's first operating company on cloud-connected intelligent robots, CloudMinds focuses on such cutting-edge applications as cloud-enabled intelligence, high-speed secure networks, secure smart devices and robotic controls. Its triple matrix of futuristic technologies in cloud-connected intelligent robots has been held in high regard by the industry and has won the company the stature as the Google of cloud-connected intelligent robots. In May 2016, CloudMinds secured a USD 30 million seed funding from SoftBank, Foxconn and Walden Venture Investments. In March 2017, it completed a USD 100 million series-A funding and gained its rightful unicorn status.

CloudMinds is keeping true to its founding vision. It aspires to become a front-runner of AI. It wants to enable technologies to go from lab to family and plant to provide tangible intelligent services and AI products to be commercialized and deployed on scale. CloudMinds' intelligent products have already been widely used in property, hospitality, banking, education, healthcare sectors and police and justice systems.

AI is growing and evolving at a phenomenal speed globally. It is permeating every industry as a principal driver of the next industrial transformation. From traditional manufacturing to strategic emerging industries and from front-end consumer interface to back-end supply chain management, AI is likely to witness explosive growth. Going forward, CloudMinds will continue to improve upon its cloud, connectivity and device product mix, better connect upstream technology enablement to downstream industry application, and expand globally based on its globalized footprint and build more partnerships to connect more mobile and smart devices. The goal is to shape a booming industry of cloud-connected intelligent robots and contribute to a better, intelligent life of mankind.

- Hibiscus Petroleum secures second revenue stream with completion of the transaction to acquire 50% participating interests in the North Sabah PSC from Shell.
- Operatorship of the assets have been transferred from Shell to SEA Hibiscus.
- Significant boost in Hibiscus Petroleum?s oil production and 2P Reserves.

KUALA LUMPUR - (ACN Newswire) - Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd (HIBISCS; MYX: 5199) is pleased to announce that its indirect wholly owned subsidiary SEA Hibiscus Sdn Bhd (SEA Hibiscus) has completed its acquisition of a 50% participating interest in the 2011 North Sabah Enhanced Oil Recovery Production Sharing Contract (North Sabah PSC or PSC) and the joint operating agreement (JOA) in relation to the PSC.

To recap, SEA Hibiscus had, on 12 October 2016, entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited and Shell Sabah Selatan Sdn Bhd (collectively Shell) to acquire Shell's participating interests in the PSC between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Shell and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PETRONAS Carigali), and the JOA between Shell and PETRONAS Carigali for the total purchase consideration of US$25 million.

The North Sabah PSC includes 20 offshore platforms across four producing fields located in the South China Sea, off the west coast of Sabah, and the Labuan Crude Oil Terminal located in the Labuan Federal Territory, in Malaysia. The fields have been producing since 1979 and the PSC provides the Group with operatorship and production rights up to 2040.

Hibiscus Petroleum Chairman, En Zainul Rahim said, "We would like to thank all the parties involved especially PETRONAS, PETRONAS Carigali and Shell for their support which has enabled us to complete this acquisition. The North Sabah PSC constitutes our second producing asset, providing Hibiscus with another revenue stream after the Anasuria Cluster. It is an exciting time for Hibiscus Petroleum as we expand and strengthen our technical and operating capabilities, profitability and balance sheet. This is an example of Hibiscus Petroleum's strategy to grow shareholder value by focusing our activities on assets where we believe we can offer a unique value proposition to enhance production from mature assets in regions of our geographic focus."

Furthermore, the North Sabah PSC will significantly boost the Group's production and proven and probable reserves (2P Reserves). On a 100% PSC basis, the total oil production averaged approximately 14.6 kbbls/day in 2017, with 2P Reserves and contingent oil resources (2C Resources) as of 1 January 2018 at approximately 40.9 mmbbls and 79 mmbbls, respectively.

Having met all the conditions precedent under the SPA, the transfer of operatorship from Shell to SEA Hibiscus concluded on 31 March 2018 and SEA Hibiscus thereby assumed the role of operator of the North Sabah PSC. As operator, SEA Hibiscus will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the work activities of the assets within the North Sabah PSC.

"We are pleased to welcome the highly capable team which has transferred from Shell to SEA Hibiscus and look forward to working closely with PETRONAS and PETRONAS Carigali to maximise the economic value of this asset. Whilst we are excited to develop the opportunities that have been identified to realise the considerable potential within the North Sabah PSC fields, our focus will be to improve the performance of the asset in a safe and environmentally responsible manner," said Dr Pascal Hos, Chief Executive Officer of SEA Hibiscus.

TANAKA Begins Sample Shipments of SKe-Lid Glass Lids Made of Quartz with AuSn for Deep Ultraviolet LEDs

Controlling cracks and metallization separation in applications such as semiconductor lasers and automotive sensor devices raises productivity and reduces costs

TOKYO - (ACN Newswire) - Tanaka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & CEO: Akira Tanae) announced today that Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo K.K. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and CEO: Akira Tanae), which operates the Tanaka Kikinzoku Group's manufacturing business, began sample shipments of SKe-Lid, a newly-developed glass lid made of quartz with gold-tin (AuSn) for use with deep ultraviolet[1] light emitting diodes (LEDs).

Deep ultraviolet LEDs are a next-generation light source expected to replace mercury lamps and have various applications including water disinfection in industry and air disinfection systems in healthcare. When used in combination with quartz glass, which has high transmissivity of deep ultraviolet wavelengths, and AuSn sealant, which has excellent airtightness and durability, however, problems with cracking of the quartz glass and metallization[2] separation can occur. These glass lids, made of quartz glass with AuSn solder, employ proprietary Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo technologies that properly control the shape and dimensions when applying the AuSn sealant to the quartz glass, making it possible to control cracking and metallization separation. Higher yields are expected to contribute to improved productivity and lower costs.

Advantages of Ske-Lid

- By using SKe-Lid as a cover material for quartz glass (also compatible with glass with AR codes), the transmissivity of high-output deep ultraviolet LEDs can be increased.
- When using quartz glass with AuSn, the AuSn solder is already applied to the glass, facilitating the positioning with the ceramic package during sealing.
- AuSn airtight sealing raises reliability and durability.
- The use of proprietary technology controls the formation of cracks during application of AuSn to quartz glass with high transmissivity of deep ultraviolet wavelengths and ceramic package sealing.

Because of these advantages provided by Ske-Lid, it is expected to contribute to higher productivity and lower costs of final products in the deep ultraviolet LED market, which will require higher outputs and reliability in the future. As the shift to SMD[3] proceeds and advances are made in autonomous vehicles, AuSn sealing will likely be used in semiconductor lasers, which require high reliability and durability, and devices that require transparent covering materials such as automotive sensors.

Background to development

As a result of the Minamata Convention on Mercury coming into effect in August 2017, development of deep ultraviolet LEDs is proceeding as a replacement for mercury lamps used for water and air disinfection.

When deep ultraviolet LEDs are manufactured using conventional resin sealants, the ultraviolet rays cause degradation of the resin sealants, resulting in deterioration of device properties and lifespan. Also, when AuSn solder, which is highly resistant to ultraviolet rays, is used as the sealant material, cracks occur in the quartz glass and metallization separation occurs due to thermal expansion between the package ceramics, window quartz glass, and AuSn sealant, giving rise to low yields.

Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo adopted proprietary technologies that adequately control the shape and dimensions when applying AuSn sealant to quartz glass and successfully developed a high-quality quartz glass lid with AuSn that monitors the occurrence of cracking and produces an airtight seal. Ske-Lid was developed with cooperation from Kyocera Corporation, Yamamura Photonics Co., Ltd., and Asahi Glass Co., Ltd., which provided the glass material and ceramic package material, and CROSS OSAKA Co., Ltd., which performed the seal testing.

Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo will display Ske-Lid at the OPTICS & PHOTONICS International Exhibition 2018 (OPIE '18) at the Pacifico Yokohama from April 25 to 27.

Cooperating Partners
Kyocera Corporation: ALN ceramic package
Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.: LTCC (GCHP TM) ceramic package
Yamamura Photonics Co., Ltd.: Quartz glass
CROSS OSAKA Co., Ltd.: Seal device evaluation

[1] Deep ultraviolet: Also referred to as UVC. Has a wavelength from 250 nm to 280 nm. Has strong disinfecting effects.
[2] Metallization: A technology for coating non-metallic surfaces with a metal. Ceramics and other materials that have been metalized form an electric circuit and are used during soldering and for different applications.
[3] SMD: An abbreviation for surface mount device. Refers to electronic components manufactured in such a way that they can be mounted merely by soldering them to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMDs make it possible to miniaturize and increase the density of electronic components such as LED chips.

Here’s How China Cut Fertilizer Use While Still Increasing Their Crop Yields

    $
    0
    0
    Apr 03, 2018
    Picture:

Millions of Chinese farmers are reaping the benefits of a massive agricultural study, which has helped them increase their crop yields whilst reducing the use of fertilizer.

Specific, evidence-based recommendations were made to 21 million Chinese farmers over a decade, offering them detailed advice about which variety of crop to use, exactly the best time to plant, how many seeds to sow and how much fertilizer to use.

The detailed guidance led to an increase in the amount of maize, wheat and rice produced, with crop yields increasing at an average of 11%.

Meanwhile, fertilizer use was reduced by an average of 15% per crop, saving 1.2 million tonnes of nitrogen, according to the study published in Nature.

And the combination of greater yields and less fertilizer led to total economic savings of $12.2bn for the farmers.

The study is of huge importance to those looking at the future of sustainable agriculture and how the world will produce enough food for the rising population. It also points to the way in which science can improve agriculture.

    Cross-border Cooperation

However, it may not be easy to replicate the results elsewhere.

The scale of the project was vast and required a significant investment of both manpower and money which would be hard for other developing countries to replicate.

The farmers were convinced to change their practices as a result of 14,000 workshops, on-site demonstrations and outreach programmes. This was achieved with the help of more than 1,000 researchers, 65,000 bureaucrats and technicians as well as 140,000 representatives from agriculture businesses.

China’s centrally-controlled government is capable of implementing policies across the whole country, unlike many sub-Saharan African countries.

“It would clearly have benefits across sub-Saharan Africa, but an approach is needed that crosses borders, organizations and funders,” Leslie Firbank, Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at Leeds University told Nature.

    Cutting Back

The success in China is also partially due to its history of over-use of fertilizers, as it has strived to produce enough food to keep pace with population growth.

Chinese farmers use an average of 305 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare per year – more than four times the global average. China has been a significant contributor to the world’s increased use of fertilizers, and Asia’s fertilizer consumption has grown faster than any other part of the world.

This has serious consequences for the environment as well as for agriculture.

Fertilizers such as nitrogen often end up in water sources, and contribute to the acidification of soil.

They also cause global warming, causing soil microbes to emit unexpectedly high levels of nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas with 300 times as much heat-trapping power as carbon dioxide.

The UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization predicted that global fertilizer use would grow by 1.4% each year between 2014 and 2018, with China accounting for 18% of that growth.

The report into the experiment notes that the Chinese farmers needed some convincing about the evidence before changing their normal farming methods.

Seeing the increased crop production should now give the Chinese farmers the incentive they need to cut back on fertilizer use.

And the wider community can learn from what happens when scientific evidence guides farming practices.

“Waste Less, Save More” Discussed ahead of Eco Expo Asia

    Apr 03, 2018
    Picture:

4 April 2018 – Hong Kong’s vision for a “greener city” through a new wave of innovative waste management and recycling initiatives was outlined to eco-industry leaders and associations along with consul-generals and trade commissioners representing 16 countries at a networking lunch themed “Waste Less, Save More‧Creating Business Opportunities” on 16 March 2018 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event was an introduction to the Eco Expo Asia 2018 to be held at Asia World-Expo from 25-28 October. The Expo is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd.

In the welcoming speech, Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC said the “Waste Less, Save More” theme responded to “strong market demand for waste management schemes and technologies”.

“Waste has become a common problem for affluent societies, with ever-growing amounts of refuse, including food, produced as a result of economic expansion,” he said, explaining the pressing need for imperative measures on waste management and recycling are a “committed focus” of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government.

    Hong Kong initiatives
In his keynote address, HKSAR Secretary for the Environment Wong Kam-sing, outlined the latest Environment Bureau waste management and recycling initiatives that could “offer a glimpse into a better, greener world ahead”.

“Waste management is a major challenge for a green city,” he said, as our consumption-driven lifestyles are putting enormous pressure on landfills. “Clearly, Hong Kong needs a more sustainable way to deal with waste.” The Secretary for the Environment went on to explain some of the measures Hong Kong is undertaking to address these problems.

Among the city’s new initiatives is the WEEE∙PARK, a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) treatment and recycling facility. It is a flagship government-funded waste-to-resources facility that officially opened on 19 March.

Operated by a consortium formed by Germany's ALBA Group and the Integrated Waste Solutions Group, WEEE∙PARK is the modern face of WEEE recycling facility turning WEEE into useful secondary raw materials through a series of detoxification, dismantling and recycling processes using advanced technologies and equipment.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's first self-sustained sludge treatment facility, T·PARK, marks a significant step forward in the city’s waste-to-energy journey. Being one of the most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the world, T·PARK combines a variety of advanced technologies into a single complex and bring together sludge incinerators with power generation and desalination. To enhance public awareness of sustainable development, a wide range of educational and leisure facilities showcasing the benefits of a waste-to-energy approach in waste management are also open to the public.

At the community level, a “Dump Less, Save More” Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme is to provide financial incentives to promote waste reduction at source and reduce overall disposal.

In addition, Mr Wong highlighted other environmental initiatives the government is working on. Hong Kong’s first organic resources recovery centre, O∙PARK, is a large-scale waste-to-energy facility with the major target for treating food waste generated from the industrial and commercial sectors including manufacturers, restaurants, hotels and supermarkets. Furthermore, EcoPark and the Recycling Fund are backing the recycling industry to develop enhanced technology to improve waste recovery rates.

At the same time, a HK$300 million “Pilot Green” transportation fund supports the testing of green and innovative technologies for public transport and goods vehicles. The green bond issuance plan promotes the development of green finance in Hong Kong. Moreover, the government will enhance tax concessions for capital expenditure incurred by enterprises in procuring eligible energy-efficient building installations and renewable energy devices by allowing tax deductions to be claimed in full in one year, instead of the current time frame of five years.

“With all these initiatives, we will make Hong Kong cleaner, and save more,” pledged Mr Wong.

    Waste management and recycling
At a “chit-chat” panel discussion, Victor Li, Immediate Past Chairperson of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association, and Wolfgang Ehmann, Executive Director of German Industry and Commerce Ltd also examined the issue.

Mr Li noted that waste should be considered a resource, not just waste. To capitalise on future opportunities in the sector, he said waste management should be seriously regarded as resource management: “It’s just a different resource.”

He explained that Hong Kong is setting an example, sharing expertise with the Chinese mainland in addressing the challenge. “Hong Kong is energetic, agile and smart,” he said. “We know how to find the world’s leading experts. We are comfortable that we know what we are doing. We know this is the best way and we have the resources to spend.” But the big question is “how to persuade Hong Kong companies to join our initiatives? We just have to wake up a lot of people.”

Mr Ehmann predicted that waste management and recycling was an industry set for major expansion. “It is a huge issue and challenge worldwide”, he said. “Extending even beyond countries to the ocean, where revelations of giant islands of plastic waste are shocking the world.”

The Secretary for the Environment finally stressed that government efforts alone are not enough. As Hong Kong is set to become a key pillar of the Chinese mainland’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area seek to enhance quality living in a greener environment, he called on industry and society to work together for a more sustainable future.

    Eco Expo Asia 2018
Looking ahead, Eco Expo Asia 2018 in October is the region’s premier business platform of its kind, which last year welcomed 335 exhibitors from 18 countries and regions, and more than 14,000 buyers from 102 countries and regions, including industry leaders and members of the green tech community from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Asia and beyond.

“Having achieved record-breaking exhibitor and visitor numbers last year, we have much to look forward to as we prepare for the 2018 edition,” said Mr Chau. “I’m sure this year’s Eco Expo Asia will once again attract plenty of buyers and suppliers from around the world to Hong Kong – to do business, network and exchange ideas on innovative green solutions,” he added.

Waste Management and Recycling is again one of the largest exhibition zones along with Water Treatment & Quality Management and Green Transportation. A Startup zone is also an ideal platform for new ventures to showcase their green innovations and solutions to potential buyers, manufacturers and investors – with young entrepreneurs and start-ups from around the globe welcome to participate.

Fuji Xerox Revamps Monochrome High-Speed Production Printer Lineup with the New B9 Series

    Apr 05, 2018
    Picture:

SINGAPORE, April 3, 2018 --( ASIA TODAY )-- Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd announced today the expansion of its monochrome high-speed production printer line-up, with the launch of the B9136, B9125, B9110, and B9100 Copier/Printers (hereafter, the B9 series) which will be rolled out in phases in the Asia-Pacific region. This launch comes as a response to the growing and diverse monochrome printing needs in the office, graphic arts and critical printing operations market segments.

While executing critical jobs that require massive amounts of data to be printed within a short period, printers need to operate reliably and yield high productivity. Looking at the current printing industry, Fuji Xerox noted that, despite the expansive use of color printing, the demand for monochrome printing is still strong — especially among producers of manuals, statements, books and comics. In order to help the customers meet their evolving needs, Fuji Xerox has revamped its current monochrome high-speed production printer line-up with the new B9 series – on-demand printers that can handle large amounts in a short period.

“Building on the success of its predecessor*1, which enjoyed long-term consumer trust and top market share for five consecutive years*2, the newly launched B9 series offers noteworthy enhancements in productivity, reliability, and durability,” said Steve Ford, general manager, production sales and marketing, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “We expect to see strong adoption of this series in Asia Pacific as markets in our region are witnessing robust growth in the key segments for which these printers are designed.”

High productivity and stability demanded in production printers

For both single-sided and duplex printing, the B9 series can achieve continuous printing speeds of up to 136 pages per minute (ppm). This high level of productivity is enabled by pairing Fuji Xerox’s very own EA-Eco LGK toner, which has an excellent low-temperature fusing capability, with the B9 series’ ability to administer a stable supply of heat in order to apply the toner efficiently onto the paper — even when printing at high speeds.

The paper transport system is designed with no sharp curves to ensure smooth paper motion and also a vertically placed paper inversion mechanism for duplex printing so that paper can be sent through at high speeds while minimizing paper jams.

Higher-quality prints achieved with greater ease

In order to achieve high resolution printouts of 2,400 x 2,400 dots per inch (dpi) while printing at quick speeds, a VCSEL*3 is used as the light source for the ROS*4 – which functions just like the heart of the printer.

Using tiny granules measuring 6.5 μm, the EA-Eco LGK toner enables an elegant reproduction of gradations in photos and images, consistent halftones and clear printing of small letters.

The B9 series also offers a selection of various, different screen settings*5 to ensure high quality printing each time. This includes the Stochastic (or FM) Screen which efficiently aids in moiré reduction, the new Edge Enhancement for fixing jagged edges of thin lines/text outlines, and the Adjust Invert Text/Line Weight setting, which helps improve the visibility of text and lines.

In-house developed print server with high resolution and integrated workflow system

With a proven track record amongst production colour printers, Fuji Xerox’s in-house developed controller, the GX Print Server, is now also being utilized in monochrome production printers for the first time ever. The GX Print Server, combined with the improvements made to the product’s hardware, delivers high-quality images and high raster image processing (RIP) speeds of 600 x 600 dpi at eight bit (256 graduation levels). Fuji Xerox’s original HQ Digital Screen Technology (MACS) then also helps create a high-definition, smooth screen image of 2,400 x 2,400 dpi. These data processing technologies all work in tandem to help deliver top quality printing results.

The B9 series supports the JDF*6 standards of the printing industry and by connecting the printer with the integrated workflow system for printing operations*7, it enables the development of a hybrid workflow that utilises both offset printers and digital printers cohesively.

Dusit International Introduces New Hotel Brand for 'Millennial-minded' Travellers

    Apr 06, 2018
    Picture:

ASAI Hotels to offer authentic local experiences in the world's most vibrant neighbourhoods

BANGKOK, Apr 5, 2018 - (ACN Newswire) - Dusit International, one of Thailand's foremost hotel and property development companies, has introduced ASAI Hotels, a distinctive new brand designed to link curious, millennial-minded travellers with authentic local experiences in vibrant cities and resort destinations worldwide.

Set to officially launch in Q1 2019 with its first hotel in Bangkok's renowned Chatuchak Market, ASAI Hotels embraces a sustainable, community-focused concept, with each property designed to reflect the culture and heritage of its location through collaborations with local artisans.

In line with the four core pillars of the brand - Thoughtful Essentials, Common Areas, Locally Inspired and Connected Community - each hotel will feature compact rooms (approximately 15 m2), whose contemporary design will emphasize key features like superior quality beds and high pressure rain showers. A large mixed-use space, meanwhile, will include a cosy and efficient work space, a leisure area, and a restaurant concept curated by local chefs who champion sustainability.

In the upcoming Chatuchak hotel, which is the only hotel to be located within the world-famous market, this includes an eatery developed by Bangkok-based chefs and restaurateurs, Jarrett Wrisley and Paolo Vitaletti, whose own restaurants, Soul Food Mahanakorn and Appia, are renowned for their sustainable approach to cooking. Their menu at ASAI Chatuchak will highlight produce from Thailand's Royal Projects.

Each ASAI hotel worldwide will leverage technology to streamline the booking and stay experience. This includes the implementation of self check-in kiosks, and exclusive online guides that link guests with authentic local experiences and lesser-known, but Instagram-worthy, attractions. ASAI will also link with selected local online start-ups, such as TakeMeTour in Thailand, to offer personalised excursions.

Staff at each property will be hired for personality as much as experience, and they will very much be the face of the brand, expected to be passionate about their neighbourhoods and always ready to share their knowledge with guests.

Alongside ASAI Chatuchak, five more properties are already confirmed in the pipeline. This includes three ASAI Hotels in Cebu, Philippines (in Lapu-Lapu, Oslob, and the city centre); one hotel in Yangon, Myanmar (in the historic Yankin Township); and a second hotel in Bangkok (in the stylish Sathorn district). All are expected to open throughout 2019.

ASAI Hotels' management team hopes to secure over 10 properties in the pipeline by the end of the year across Southeast Asia and Japan. This includes owned and joint venture properties as well as properties under Hotel Management Agreements. Australia, Europe and Central America are also on the radar for potential projects.

"Inspired by community, and driven by sustainability, ASAI is an exciting new concept for Dusit that will leverage the company's 70 years of hospitality heritage to deliver a new kind of stay experience in vibrant neighbourhoods worldwide," said Mr Siradej Donavanik, Managing Director of Asai Holdings Co., Ltd., Dusit International. "The brand has been carefully crafted to meet the needs of millennial-minded travellers who seek authentic local experiences, and who appreciate value and quality for money.

"ASAI is not budget travel - this is an affordable lifestyle brand offering something new, different and bespoke. Our collaborations with local artisans in each destination will ensure each stay is unique, memorable, and definitely worthy of our slogan - Live Local. And everywhere we set foot we will always ensure we have a positive impact."

Ms Suphajee Suthumpun, Group CEO, Dusit International, said, "In line with our three-pronged strategy for balance, expansion and diversification, the introduction of ASAI Hotels will add an innovative new revenue stream to our company that complements our traditional hospitality offerings and actively responds to the needs and desires of millennial-minded travellers.

"Recent detailed studies in America have shown that, alongside a desire for local experiences, a majority 35% of this segment prefer to stay in luxury and upscale resorts. The majority also placed cost and security as chief concerns when booking accommodation. ASAI is perfectly positioned to meet these needs, and we look forward to making the brand a huge success."

Dusit International is currently in a significant growth phase which will see the company's current portfolio of 27 hotels surpass 70 worldwide within the next four years. The company's other hotel brands, which cover luxury and mid-market segments, include: Dusit Thani, Dusit Devarana, Dusit Princess, and dusitD2.

Today the company is a leader in hotel management and hospitality education and comprises a unique international portfolio of distinctive hotels and resorts operating under four brands: Dusit Thani, dusitD2, Dusit Princess and Dusit Devarana. Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition The most influential and comprehensive lighting and LED event in Asia China Import and Export Fair Complex Guangzhou, China, 9 – 12 June 2018

Over 2,600 exhibitors select Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition as their trade platform of choice

The global lighting and LED industry is gearing up for one of their key trade fairs of the year in China. Industry peers converge on Guangzhou each year to do business, learn more about new market trends, and to look for inspiration to make the next breakthroughs in lighting technology and design. The 23rd edition of Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition returns from 9 ‒ 12 June 2018 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex, Guangzhou, China. With more than 2,600 exhibitors from around the world already confirmed to join, this year’s fair promises to be one of the largest editions to date.

More than just a fair of booths and pavilions, Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition organises a comprehensive concurrent event programme to bring the best and brightest in the industry to the show. This year’s event programme ‒ THINKLIGHT: Embracing Changes ‒ will be developed with the help of a sharing programme that has been launched in advance to collect insights from the industry.

Commenting on this year’s event programme, Ms Lucia Wong, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd, remarked: “We are pleased to launch the THINKLIGHT: Embracing Changes sharing programme and we are delighted to see the industry’s early positive response. Through the sharing of ideas and insights we are encouraging the industry to embrace these changes and to discover rewarding new opportunities from both within and outside of traditional industry realms.”

Exhibitors, visitors and industry insiders are welcomed to share their thoughts on current changes or future trends in the industry with the fair organisers. This feedback will guide the content of the concurrent event programme to ensure that every speaker and presentation during the four-day show is as constructive as possible.

Over 2,600 exhibitors select Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition as their platform of choice

The changing dynamics of the industry will be on display throughout the exhibition. Demonstrating intelligent technologies that revolve around digitalisation and the latest design trends, more than 2,600 exhibitors have already been confirmed. Some of the key themes to look out for around the exhibition include:

    Smart solutions:

The lighting industry is pinning its future on connected lighting and IoT. The 2018 fair will be a haven of smart lighting solutions including lighting with sensor integration, built-in wireless connectivity and colour tuning capabilities. This type of lighting will perform beyond mere illumination and will function to react to human activity. Ideal locations for such lighting is found in offices, homes and retail shops, helping to improve workplace efficiency and customer experience.

Outdoor lighting is a crucial partner in smart cities. Smart street lighting exhibitors will showcase smart poles that are able to perform data collection and provide real-time city monitoring, functions increasingly requested by urban planners and local authorities. Some of the brands on show include HPWinner, Fonda Technology, Shanghai Feilo, Ecoel lighting, Huati, HEM lighting, Delos and LeiMai.

    LEDs – Miniaturisation and integration:

The integration of LED technology with electronics means a more highly integrated and smaller light engine that combines LEDs with driver electronics. Such small form factors can incorporate connectivity and intelligence. LED manufacturers are able to improve the quality of light and simplify design and production for luminaire manufacturers.

On the chip level, CSP (Chip-Scale Packaging) technology is an obvious proponent. The trends in packaged LEDs open new markets beyond just retrofitting lighting but also in niche market applications. At the 2018 fair, Hall 10.2 (Area B) is dedicated to showcasing the latest packaging technology, including CSPs with different half-width-angle emission, high CRI (colour rendering index) and integrated primary optics as well as packaging for UV/IR LED-related applications and horticultural lighting.

On the module level, many companies are pushing towards higher integration levels by adding sensors, controls and wireless capabilities. Halls 12.2 and 13.2 will be dedicated to showcasing drivers, ICs, light engines and modules. Driver on Board (DoB) technology will be one of the highlighted product categories. The modules have the potential to be easily installed, have cost-effective drivers and emit an adjustable light source.

    Human-centric lighting:

Advances in LED technology and the proliferation of cost-effective LEDs have also enabled new lighting designs with a focus on the human-centric concept. By creating lighting designs that are able to adjust their colour temperature and intensity at different times of the day, lighting is better able to match the natural circadian rhythm of human activity. Some of the exhibitors presenting these solutions include Dilux, LEDVANCE, Magic Lighting, Wellmax, Sparta, Shanghai Arex Electronics and Konka.

Commenting on these significant changes for the industry, Ms Wong added: “The rising trend of the smart city and smart building concepts utilising data analytics is revolutionising the way in which the lighting industry operates. We are glad to see these changes bring with them the possibility to introduce a renewed energy and strength to the industry. We will continue to cultivate the fair as a platform to help industry players navigate the evolving business landscape and to unveil the industry’s next game-changing breakthroughs.”

The Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition runs concurrently with Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology. Both are a part of Messe Frankfurt’s Light + Building Technology fairs worldwide, headed by the biennial Light + Building event.

Messe Frankfurt also offers a series of other light and building technology events worldwide, including the Shanghai International Lighting Fair, Thailand Lighting Fair, BIEL Light + Building in Argentina, Light Middle East in the United Arab Emirates, Interlight Moscow powered by Light + Building in Russia as well as Light India, the LED Expo New Delhi, and the LED Expo Mumbai in India.

    Apr 09, 2018

Dubai – United Arab Emirates, 9 April 2018: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, His Excellency Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security in Dubai and Honorary Chairman of Emirates Forensic, today officially inaugurated the Emirates International Forensic Conference and Exhibition – Emirates Forensic 2018, being held from the 9th to the 11th of April, at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, under the theme “Science Serving Justice”.

His Excellency Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim stressed in his opening speech on the approach taken by the Dubai Police and its keenness to train its officers and equip them with knowledge in all fields involved in the security and police work, to be able to deal in high efficiency with crimes of all kinds.

He added: “The conference today is an opportunity to acquire knowledge in the field of forensic science and criminology, calling to focus on the best disciplines and cope with the requirements of the era, which will make us at the forefront in this field”.

His Excellency Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan shared with the audience the Dubai Police's pioneering experience in the field of Forensic Science and Criminology, and the most important achievements made by Dubai Police in this field until the day by setting Dubai Police Forensic Science building that contains the latest technology and equipment, after studying the most important laboratories in the world, such as the United States of America and Germany.

Furthermore, Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim noted that his inclination to establish a forensics laboratory was one of the main objectives on his agenda since he joined the Dubai Police, saying: “Despite the difficulties and obstacles that prevented the goal from being realized at the time, I insisted on achieving it at the first opportunity I had after I held the post of the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police in 1980. The forensic laboratory was completed in November of 1981. The lab was officially inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in January 1983.”

His Excellency continued, “Then in 1994, we introduced the ‘DNA Scan’ technique in the Dubai Police Forensic Lab, after we participated in international conferences on DNA, and after it was recognized by the UK and a number of US states at the time as concrete evidence in proving crimes against their perpetrators. We have faced the problem of recognizing DNA as evidence in courts in the UAE. One day, A Sharia Court in Ras Al Khaimah asked us to prove the filiation of a child. The necessary tests were carried out on the sample. The Sharia Court Judge summoned the DNA expert to the Court to take his testimony and discuss the report with him. The Judge recognized the DNA as evidence of the child’s filiation. Accordingly, Sharia laws were able to approve evidence that civil courts governing by civil law had not been approving before. This is evidence that Islamic Law and its Sharia texts are more capable of absorbing developments and innovations. In the same year, we hosted the first conference of its kind in the Middle East about DNA, attended by experts, specialists and judges from various countries around the world, through which we have succeeded in introducing the importance of DNA as a new technique to prove crimes to the state's judicial authorities.”

He further added, “Previously, we have sent a number of police officers on scholarships to study DNA science abroad. Everything was going on well and we have introduced DNA officially to the forensic lab. Our courts then have started to recognize DNA as a convincing evidence to prove and convict perpetrators. On 29/02/2008, we started to prepare and study a new forensic lab, where it is a modern forensic lab. After the completion of all procedures, the project was initiated and completed. It was inaugurated in March, 2016. The lab is the largest of its kind in the Middle East in terms of capabilities and specialties. It is also considered a basic reference for forensic science and criminology in the region, equipped with the latest technologies, human resources and national as well as international expertise recognized for its efficiency and ability to fully professionally handle advanced techniques in the field of forensics and crime detection. The number of national personnel working in it – doctors, experts, officers, staff – are 631 staff, 19 of them are PhDs, 41 MAs, 143 were BAs and 19 undergraduates, mostly nationals.

From his side, Dr. Abdul Salam Al Madani, Executive Chairman of Emirates International Forensic Science Conference and Exhibition and Chairman of INDEX Holding, said, “Being held in its 2nd edition under the theme “Science serving Justice”, Emirates Forensic Conference & Exhibition has come at the right opportune time, supporting the UAE’s vision of the 2021 of becoming the country with the lowest violent crime rates in the world and the most safe and secure through its mission of applying justice through efficient team work to ensure security and safety of people and property. "

He went on saying: “We are very proud as a national company for events management to be part of this international scientific event that brings together experts from the UAE and abroad under one roof in order to exchange knowledge and experiences to combat various crimes.”

During his opening remarks, Ronald Singer, Technical & Administrative Director, Tarrant County (TEXAS) Medical Examiners Office Fort Worth, Texas, said, “Emirates Forensic conference offers us ‘forensic professionals’ a great opportunity to discuss the issue of regulation in forensic sciences. Ensuring the quality of work that is produced by forensic laboratories is a primary concern throughout the globe. This conference provides an important venue to examine this topic, bringing together experts from the world over to discuss many topics of common interest including current forensic research, advances in legal medicine and the administration of criminal justice.”

He added, “Emirates Forensic allows us to share the latest information about the various advances in forensic technology and interpretation while also giving us an opportunity to openly discuss common problems that exist within the field, which is vital to the continued growth of forensic sciences. It is extremely important that the judicial system is given full access to the maximum amount of reliable information, which ensures that justice is rightly served and instances of potential miscarriage of justice are avoided.”

On his part, Professor Jose R. Almirall, Director at the Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science in Miami, USA said, “At Emirates Forensic, I am giving two presentations and one workshop. The first presentation, “Predicting the Origin of Heroin by Analysis of Inorganic Elements and Isotope Ratios of Strontium,” describes recent research on the use of trace elements and strontium isotope ratios to geographically source the origin of heroin. The second presentation describes the paths to international standardization of forensic science practice using the analysis of trace evidence (glass examinations) as a model for how basic research can result into routine practice in a forensic laboratory. In addition, my workshop will introduce students to the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) of Forensic Science and focus on the more than 60 documentary standards within the forensic chemistry discipline under development in OSAC.”

Following the opening ceremony, H.E. Lt General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim and His Excellency Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-In-Chief of Dubai Police, accompanied by; Major General Expert Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police, Major General Ahmed Mohammed Bin Thani, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Ports Affairs, Major General Mohammed Saad Al-Sharif, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Administrative Affairs, and a number of local and international officials, heads of departments and police stations in Dubai, toured the exhibition area, where they were briefed about latest scientific innovations and technologies to overcome crime, including the use of DNA profiling, as well as the Digital Forensics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) among many others.
