Hong Kong, 7 March 2013: The SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation is committed to developing high-calibre students for the nation. The Foundation has been running a scholarship programme to help students pursue doctoral and master's degrees at the University of Cambridge, and this was extended to a tenth year with a new agreement to grant scholarships to mainland and Hong Kong students.
Executive Director Amy Kwok said that the Foundation would help more disadvantaged students in the future: "We share my late father's belief in training talented people for the nation. We hope the scholars will value this opportunity to learn the latest technology and contribute to society. We also give special thanks to the University of Cambridge for working with us to help more students further their studies abroad."
Cambridge Overseas Trust Director Michael O'Sullivan said: "The University of Cambridge is proud to host some 800 of China's most able students, particularly at the postgraduate level where many of China's best graduates choose Cambridge for further study. Thanks to the long-term support of the SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation, we are able to extend these opportunities to outstanding Chinese students who lack financial means, and I would like to thank the Foundation for its vision and commitment to this important cause. It is good for China and good for Cambridge."
The scholarships have helped top students with limited means to study at the University of Cambridge since 2004; covering three years for doctorates and one year for master's degrees. It has benefitted nearly 120 students so far, and they have made commitments to return home after graduation and contribute to the development of their disciplines and research.
The programme is now open to applications from eligible mainland and Hong Kong students. Full-cost scholarships will be given to one doctoral and eight master's degree students, with no restrictions on discipline or dissertation topic. The scholarships are endorsed by the Chinese Ministry of Education, which will assist with publicity and gathering applications on the mainland. The deadline is 31 March 2013.
