HONG KONG -(ASIA TODAY)- For the 16th consecutive year, graduates from the MTR Apprentice Training Scheme have won “Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee Awards” from the Vocational Training Council (VTC).
Craft Apprentice graduate Mr Lo Pun-shing was honoured yesterday (20 March 2013) with the 2012 Outstanding Apprentice Award.
Mr Lo remembers being at a crossroad in his life when he applied to become an MTR apprentice. At that time, he was a bit low on confidence. Now, having completed three years of on-the-job training with guidance and coaching from experienced mentors, Mr Lo knows he has found the right career for himself working in the MTR train depot. More importantly, he has developed a strong sense of belonging to the company and his team.
“I work hard to help maintain the trains to keep them in good condition because I know this is critically important for the millions of people who rely on our train service every day,” he said.
This year’s VTC Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee Awards presentation ceremony was a cause for double celebration for MTR Corporation with Technician Apprentice graduate Mr Chan Man-ho also being honoured with the 2012 Apprentice/Trainee of Excellent Performance (Merit Award).
A total of 10 Outstanding Apprentices out of around 200 nominees from various organisations in Hong Kong were honoured this year.
“This year marks the 35th anniversary of MTR’s apprentice scheme, VTC’s recognition serves as a great source of encouragement to all of us,
particularly the apprentices who work so hard behind-the-scenes everyday.
With our new rail lines under construction, we will definitely need to bring more young blood into the Corporation to build our success for the future,” said Mr Morris Cheung, Human Resources Director at MTR Corporation.
“Our Apprentice Scheme also represents a very important part of MTR’s overall contribution to youth development in Hong Kong by offering a good career path to suitable candidates,” he added.
Recruitment is now underway for the 2013 intake for the MTR Apprentices and Technician Associate Training Schemes. About 100 places are available and applications will close on 24 May 2013. Details of the relevant application requirements can be found at www.mtr.com.hk.
The MTR Apprentice Schemes started in 1978. It is designed to equip young people with railway-specific skills to help meet the Corporation’s growing business needs. To date, more than 1,200 young people have completed apprentice training at the Corporation.
