April 10, 2013, SINGAPORE – The Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) turns 19 this year. Taking place over three days from the April 19–21 at the Marina Bay Sands, Expo Hall B and C, the Guest of Honour will be Dr Teo Ho Pin, Chairman of the National Water Safety Council. Dr Teo will kick off the new DiveSafer Programme and at the same time, officiate the Opening Ceremony on April 19 at 3pm.
John Thet, Director of ADEX, says, “We are very excited about this year’s line up. We are always striving to keep things fresh for our dive community and in the area of conservation, we are always looking for new and creative ways to inspire more people to be active in preserving our natural environments.”
This year’s chosen ADEX icon, which is the show’s dedicated marine life where activities are garnered to heighten awareness of its preservation, is the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). All aspects of this giant fish will be publicised and major efforts will be taken to educate the public about these graceful creatures and the issues that threaten their existence. ADEX attendees can find out how they can do their part to help keep the whale shark population flourishing.
The ADEX official publication, Asian Diver, has a yearly ADEX edition to commemorate the event. Called The Big Blue Book, designed to be a reference material, with the bulk of the publication focusing on everything you need to know about the whale shark, this collector’s edition issue provides premium photographs, interaction articles and scientific overviews.
Furthermore, it will act as a pre-event show guide for the Asia Dive Expo, including event information, speaker details and agenda. This magazine will be out on newstands early March.
As always, conservation groups will have prominent positioning during the show. The ADEX organiser, Asia Geographic Magazines Pte Ltd, is sponsoring booth spaces to different conservation orgs including, Physalus (physalus.org), Shark Savers (sharksavers.com.sg), Sea Shepard (seashepard.org), Manta Trust (mantatrust.org) and Nature Society Singapore (nss.org.sg).
The Historical Diving Society Asia (HDS Asia) will be officially launched at ADEX 2013. HDS Asia will be active in all forms of diving, with the aim of education and preservation of the history of diving, maintaining the “not-for-profit” philosophy that its parent org, Asian Geographic SOCIETY, embraces.
The HDS Asia list of Board Members are impressive and includes:
Dr Sylvia Earle, Explorer in Residence, National Geographic Society; Jean Michelle Cousteau, Diving filmmaker and conservationist and Ernie Brooks II, world-renowned photographer, to name a few. The Board comprises significant names in the commercial diving world, representing artistry in recording the underwater on film, equipment design and many other field of underwater endeavour.
The ADEX Ocean Ambassador (2013–2014) is also re-launched with a new direction. Open to applicants of any gender, age, nationality and background that are doing good work within the vast Asian region from Turkey to Fiji, Russia to Australia, they have to be divers who possess a talent for independent thinking and the capacity to embrace projects that require determination in the face of considerable odds. All applicants must submit a concrete conservation proposal. The winner will have monetary support from Asian Geogrpahic SOCIETY towards their project.
There will be a widely anticipated forum as well. Entitled Marine Life: Entertainment or Erudition?, ADEX has invited eight (8) prominent speakers to debate with one side discussing the relevance of promoting human delight as the central value for protecting a species and the other side questioning this approach.
