Tong Yang-Tze’s Calligraphy
Designer: FREEiMAGE DESIGN
Country: Taiwan
Ingenuity Follows Nature – A Poster Exhibition of Asian Designers & Tong Yang-Tze’s Calligraphy
Synopsis: Initiated by internationally renowned artist Tong Yang-Tze, and organised by the Taiwan Design Center, with Taiwanese graphic designer Chen Jun-liang and designer from HK, Freeman Lau as curators, the objective was to promote and pass on the art of Asian calligraphy. 20 Asian master graphic designers from five countries were invited, along with 20 Taiwanese graphic artists, to create posters from elements of Tong Yang-Tze’s writing under the theme of Ingenuity Follows Nature. Moreover, interior designer Ray Chen created a 900 square metre space to engage the dynamic of the new and old.
Title: Daikanyama T-Site
Designer: Klein Dytham architecture
Country: Japan
Daikanyama T-Site
Synopsis: The new Daikanyama Tsutaya bookstore in an upmarket but relaxed, low-rise Tokyo district, is situated between large existing trees which the design uses to blur interior and exterior. The design’s wit is seen in the façade’s perforated screens forming the Ts of the Tsutaya logo, and much larger T-shapes are disguised in the building's elevations and plans. Using wood as the base of creating a cultural complex with recreation and reading space, the bookstore gives people a feeling of home and adds vitality to the community.
Title: Palace Hotel Tokyo Chapel
Designer: NOMURA Co. Ltd
Country: Japan
Palace Hotel Tokyo Chapel
Synopsis: The Palace Hotel Tokyo’s ceremony hall was undated with a unique and spectacular view of some rich and dazzling gardens. Designed for multicultural ceremonies in the daytime and elegant entertainment at night, the design added just one layer of veil, to make the most use of the splendid scenery, softly wrapping the guests. In addition, the veil’s assembling was done carefully by hand, on site. Instead of imitating European churches, the Asian architecture shows the real values of its culture and spirit. Like the best sushi, the space looks as if no extra work was done, but it’s the result of great unseen techniques.
