Singapore, Nov 18, 2013 -- (ACN Newswire) -- Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX, PHIA) today announced that world-renowned neuroradiology specialist Dr Mark van Buchem will be a keynote speaker at National Neuroscience Institute's (NNI) 13th Advanced Neuroradiology Course (November 18 - November 19) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore as part of their Philips Master Seminar Series in Asia Pacific. The Philips Master Seminar Series aims to highlight the impact of technology on the healthcare industry and its innovative use to improve existing processes.
Speaking at the 13th Advanced Neuroradiology Course, Dr van Buchem will be sharing his expertise on differentiating neurodegenerative disorders from changes in the ageing brain through the use of new Magnetic Resonance (MR) technologies and techniques.
"The biggest challenge in the neuroimaging field is discriminating specific neurodegenerative diseases from the changes that usually occur as a result of normal ageing," said Dr van Buchem. "Over the years, new technologies have introduced new processes to enable radiologists to apply their knowledge more effectively."
Dr van Buchem is a professor and chief of neuroradiology at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and a clinical director at Medical Delta Imaging Institute. Over the years, Dr van Buchem has been actively involved in several professional organisations, such as the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the Dutch Society for Neuroradiology. He has published over 270 scientific papers and supervised more than 25 PhD theses.
"We cannot think of a more qualified person to speak at our Master Seminar Series than Dr van Buchem whose research track record and contributions in neuroradiology are unparalleled. We are also honored that Dr van Buchem will be participating in our Master Seminar Series in Asia Pacific to share his knowledge with other experts on the use of technology in advancing neuroimaging techniques," said Suvendra Das, General Manager Philips Healthcare, Singapore.
Philips is a leader in the development of imaging solutions, which facilitate clear and fast diagnostic scanning of the brain and spine. In the field of MR technology, Philips Healthcare has introduced an array of products designed with patients in mind, including the first-ever digital broadband MR, the Philips Ingenia 1.5T and 3.0T Magnetic Resonance System with revolutionary dStream architecture. The Philips Ingenia 3.0T MR System provides superior image quality with 40% more SNR (signal-to-noise ratio [1]), allowing radiologists to enhance their clinical imaging ability. The digital aspect of this MR System gives radiologists outstanding image clarity, clinical accuracy, a better workflow and faster results.
"In the field of MR, seeing more means doing more. With Philips Healthcare MR products, researchers and healthcare professionals are better equipped to diagnose and treat a wide variety of diseases. More importantly, I believe that Philips' advancement in the neuroradiology field will translate into better patient outcomes," said Dr van Buchem.
Dr van Buchem is participating in the Philips Master Seminar Series across Asia Pacific in Vietnam, India, Singapore, and Korea. As part of the tour, Philips Healthcare is inviting radiologists and radiographers in India and Korea to submit their best case abstracts for a chance to train for one week at Leiden University Medical Center, widely recognised as the center of medical innovation. At NNI's 13th Advanced Neuroradiology Course in Singapore, Dr van Buchem will be speaking on 'The ageing brain from an imaging perspective'; 'Neurodegenerative diseases'; and 'New MRI approaches to study the ageing brain'.
