Region’s most prestigious energy awards event returns to Dubai with Young Engineer of the Year one of four new categories

Dubai, UAE, 1 February, 2014: A record number of submissions has underlined a standout shortlist of heavy hitters from the region’s power, lighting, renewable, and nuclear sectors, as the prestigious Middle East Electricity Awards returns to Dubai with four new categories.

Announced today, the shortlist of 19 projects from 115 submissions across eight categories will contest for the ultimate accolade at a gala dinner ceremony on 11 February at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

A regular feature of the Middle East Electricity exhibition, which takes place from 11-13 February, the increasingly popular awards programme has this year introduced the Young Engineer of the Year Award, identifying young, enthusiastic engineers that make a positive contribution to the future growth of the energy sector.

Other new categories added for the 2014 edition include the Best Marketing Campaign, and Best Product Launch at Middle East Electricity 2014, which will highlight the latest cutting edge technologies from thousands of new products being introduced by more than 1,250 international exhibitors at the three-day trade show.

The Green Champion of the Year Special Award wraps up the new categories this year, recognising an individual who has made a significant and long-term contribution to implementing green initiatives within their organisation in the Middle East.

“The quality and quantity of submissions for the Middle East Electricity Awards 2014 has surpassed submissions in all previous editions of the awards programme,” said Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, organisers of Middle East Electricity.

“We are delighted to present a prestigious platform where organisations and individuals can celebrate with industry peers in contributing to the growth and development of what is one of the most exciting energy sectors in the world. The Awards will bring the power industry together for an exceptional evening of live entertainment and unique networking opportunities.”

Among the prominent shortlisted finalists for the 2014 Middle East Electricity Awards are Dubai Municipality for its Al-Fahaidi Market project in the Solar Project of The Year category and the Department of Transport Abu Dhabi and Parsons for their joint Ras Al Akhdar Bainoonah Street Lighting project in the Lighting Project of the Year category.

Other finalists include Altaaqa Global for its Yemen Power Plant in the Power Project of The Year category, and the Ras Laffan Power Company for having successfully completed seven years without Loss Time Incident (LTI), as it vies to take out the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Project or Initiative of The Year award.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Middle East Electricity focuses on the power, lighting, renewable and nuclear sectors.

Supported by Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), and Dubai Municipality, the 39th edition of the region’s foremost power event is the largest ever, covering twelve halls and over 50,000 square metres of exhibition space.

One the world’s largest energy events, Middle East Electricity is also co-located with the second edition of Solar Middle East, where more than 100 international solar manufacturers, suppliers and developers will look to capitalise on a burgeoning regional solar market.
