An organisation in the US has gotten the green light to establish a non-profit university in Ho Chi Minh City, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

The Trust for University Innovation in Vietnam (TUIV) had its proposal to establish Fulbright University Vietnam approved in principle by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, the Saigon Times reported on June 4.

Vu Thanh Tu Anh, director of research at the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program (FETP) in Vietnam, was quoted as saying that the university would initially focus on master’s degree courses that will be designed in accordance with FETP.

Later it will expand its scope to undergraduate and doctorate courses.

FETP was founded in 1994 as a partnership between Ho Chi Minh City’s University of Economics and the US’s Harvard Kennedy School.

The Fulbright University Vietnam project was first mentioned in a co-statement by President Truong Tan Sang and his UScounterpart Barack Obama in July of last year, and again during US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Vietnam in December.

TUIV is headquartered in Cambridge with Thomas Vallely, former director of the Vietnam Program at Harvard University as its chairman, Anh said.
