Bangalore July 9, 2014: As part of the Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) under T-E-A-C-H Mission aiming towards eradicating illiteracy and make India totally literate by 2017, Rotary has designed a campaign 'A Million Books, A Million Smiles'.
The Rotary District 3190 in Bangalore extended its support through this program that was launched by Shri. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Global Education Trust, and Past International President Shri Kalyan Banerjee on the occasion of Installation Ceremony of District Governor Rtn. Manjunath Shetty. One lakh plus Rotarians of India aim to collect a million plus books during the month of July 2014 to create libraries in Government Schools providing equal opportunity for those children to be exposed to the fascinating world of books.
Rotary Dist.3190, has tied up with the “Akshara Foundation” and “Hippocampus Learning Centres”, of Bangalore, as the Knowledge Partners – helping them with technical advice and model practices to build modern, user-friendly libraries with the collected books. The collected books will be used build more than 1,500 libraries in about 100 Government Schools under the "Happy Schools" project T-E-A-C-H. The focus is onto bestow books that are with pictures with up to five-six lines of written matter per page, Comic books , Amar Chitra Kathas, Illustrated reference books on Science, History, Geography, Drawing books and sets of crayons/color pencils ,Atlases and globes, and Other books with simple content in each State language and English. These books will be relevant for students of elementary class I to VIII.
“Café Coffee Day” and “Manyavar”, the chain of premium stores for men’s garments with outlets in 130 cities and towns across India, have agreed to let all its premises be used as book collection centers. As any person who would donate books can drop into the Coffee Day or Manyavar store and donate the books in a marked bin/box that will be placed by Rotary.
Rotary District 3190 in Bangalore appeal to masses to join hands with Rotary India Literacy Mission, to donate and collect books so that may together light up the smiles of
less advantaged children in millions - a book in a library for them is the best force multiplier of learning to think!
“A Million Books, A Million Smiles” campaign has received enthusiastic commitments throughout the country, which makes sure that the mission will be accomplished with of course, unstinted help and support from the civil society – children, parents and friends!
