The University was placed among the world’s top 50 universities in the field of Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, as well as in the subject of Computer Science in this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiaotong University, China.
“It is particularly heartening that NUS is ranked 16th in the world for Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences, and that we continue to make significant impact in Economics/Business, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences & Mathematics and Physics,” said NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan. “I am grateful for the excellent work and dedicated efforts by NUS academics and researchers, which continue to be recognised globally. We have a strong pipeline of highly competitive research faculty and groups in a growing number of areas, which will enable us to increase our translational impact in Singapore, Asia and beyond.”
NUS jumped 23 places to the 111th position this year and is within the 101-150 band of more than 1,200 universities ranked by ARWU.
This year, the University has also progressed in ARWU’s list of top 200 universities in the Broad Subject Fields as well as the selected Subject Fields. Its rankings in these areas are:

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. ARWU lists the best 500 of the 1,200 universities it ranks every year.
