Commissioner Joseph E. Finn has appointed Connie S. Wong as the Deputy Commissioner for Labor Relations, Human Resources and Legal Affairs effective on September 15, 2014. In this capacity Deputy Commissioner Wong will serve as the Legal Advisor on all matters to the Fire Commissioner. In addition, Deputy Commissioner Wong will work with the Human Resources Department, both uniform and civilian, on contract and personnel issues with the three labor unions that represent the department’s employees. Deputy Commissioner Wong will also be advising the Fire Prevention Division and the Fire Marshal on code enforcement regulations and review proposed legislation governing fire safety in the City of Boston.
“Connie Wong will be a great addition to my senior management team” stated Commissioner Finn. “Connie brings a strong background in the fire service having previously worked with our various divisions at headquarters and in the field. As Deputy Commissioner, Connie will be the highest ranking civilian working for the Boston Fire Department. As I said when I was sworn in, it is important to have civilians at top level positions to provide perspective and balance within the department” continued Commissioner Finn.
Connie S. Wong is a lifelong resident of the City of Boston. Ms. Wong grew up in Boston's Chinatown and attended local area schools. A graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University Law School, Ms. Wong joined the City of Boston Law Department in 1995 as an Assistant Corporation Counsel. In 1997, Ms. Wong was assigned to the Boston Fire Department as its in-house Legal Counsel, where she worked on fire prevention and personal injury defense litigation in addition to handling a myriad of other legal issues on behalf of the department. Ms. Wong left the City of Boston in 2000 to join the Criminal Clerk's Office at Suffolk Superior Court as an Assistant Clerk. In 2004, Ms. Wong was appointed as a Trial Magistrate for criminal matters in Suffolk Superior Court, where she presided over arraignments, bail hearings and other pretrial matters.
Of her new endeavor, Ms. Wong says “I am delighted to return to the Boston Fire Department as its new Deputy Commissioner of Labor Relations, Human Resources and Legal Affairs. It is an exciting time to be at the Fire Department as it embarks on a new chapter under Commissioner Finn's leadership and vision. I look forward to working with Commissioner Finn and all the members of the Department.”
The position of Deputy Commissioner for Labor Relations, Human Resources and Legal Affairs will be joined by the Deputy Commissioner for Administration and Finance. The Commissioner is currently interviewing candidates for that position to round out his senior staff.
