Singapore, 15 October 2012- Students from Temasek Polytechnic presented innovative artworks on Saturday inspired by Interface at the Xtra Showroom located at Park Mall. The showcase was held in conjunction with this year’s Saturday in Design event where Singapore’s premium showrooms opened their doors to the architecture and design community, and design lovers.

Partnering with Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design, Interface invited over 100 second-year students to create abstract art pieces that responded to the concept of ‘Hybrid’. Five groups consisting of 20 promising young designers were shortlisted to give competitive pitches to a panel of Interface executives including its in-house creative team. The winning ideas of three groups were chosen for creating concepts that was inspiring, imaginative and engaging.

“Inspiring people and encouraging sustainability in the design industry is at the heart of our business. This year, we partnered with a local polytechnic to encourage and discover how young minds interpret innovation and sustainability through the lens of creativity. This is a unique project and we were truly inspired by the quality of submissions and the passion demonstrated by the students that have taken part.” shared Robin Hales, Vice- President of Product Development, Asia Pacific.

The showcased art installations include:
Creativity in Motion: Constructed primarily using post-its and paper origami, this winning piece inspired by the late Ray Anderson stimulated the excitement of innovative ideas through a swarm formation. Notes containing sustainable ideas allowed for greater interactivity with viewers.

Picture Perfect: Giant frames provided a focus on Biophilia, defining Interface’s instinctive need to connect with nature and the creation of the Urban Retreat collection – a perfect design in an imperfect concrete urban environment.

Eureka: This installation is a playful interpretation of Interface’s zest for fresh ideas and insatiable need for constantly pushing the envelope to create ideal and unique spaces.

Steven Louie, Associate Lecturer of Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design said “This was an amazing opportunity for our students to get out of the classroom and consider how what they’ve learnt can be applied in the real world. Interface encouraged the students to be ambitious and to take creative risks. The students responded by coming up with a range of proposals that really stretched and developed their ideas, resulting in engaging art installations.”

Jerold Eng, 18, one of the winning designers from Temasek Polytechnic shared “It is extremely exciting to have our artworks exposed to a wider audience. Having the chance to create expressionistic art pieces this early on in our chosen pathway is truly a wonderful opportunity.”
