Singapore, 12 February 2015 – ASIATODAY.COM - In order to better ensure Singapore’s seaward defence andprotect our maritime interests, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has commissioned eight new Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs). These vessels, constructed here in Singapore, can be quickly configured to address a wide range of mission requirements; ranging from search and rescue operations to naval combat. These additions to the RSN’s fleet are just awaiting one vital piece of detail that would complete their induction – names. In RSN tradition, the public is invited to be a part of the legacy by naming the Navy's future Littoral Mission Vessels.

The RSN’s LMV naming competition will kick off alongside the launch of the SAF50 exhibition at VivoCity on Thursday, 12 February 2015. The winners who choose the best names for the eight LMVs will stand to win up to S$3,000 in cash prizes. The winning entries will reflect a number of important characteristics, including the purpose and capabilities of the LMVs, the vessels they are replacing, as well as the history and tradition of the RSN.

This will be the third time that the RSN has looked to Singaporeans to help name new vessels in its fleet, a tradition that began with the Bedok-class mine countermeasure vessels, and continued with the Formidable-class stealth frigates.

The LMVs will also be the first vessels designed and constructed in Singapore – a significant achievement. The public now can be a part of Singapore’s naval tradition by visiting http://www.navy.sg/nameourships to help name these latest additions to the RSN’s fleet. Entries close 15 March 2015.
