The TAITRA-backed overseas tour of the COMPUTEX d&i awards stopped at Barcelona for the 2015 Mobile World Congress. The four-day exhibit ran March 2nd to the 5th and is the tour’s second-to-last stop.
Situated near the center of the exhibition grounds in Hall 5, the yellow and black exhibit showcases approximately 40 telecommunications and mobile devices that have been awarded the d&i awards. Buyers visiting the exhibit include representatives from Japanese and Korean heavyweight companies Sharp and LG and German research institution GfK.
Many of the showcased products have yet to hit the European market. The exhibit offers MWC visitors a first glance of the market line-up and an opportunity to enquire into sales channels. TAITRA believes that buyers’ enquiries and feedback collected during MWC will assist the companies behind the winning products to assess the European market and in researching and developing new products target European consumers.
This year’s MWC centers around “Connected Living” and features 5 major themes—IoT, Flagship Device Launches, Wearables, 5G, and Multiplay & Content Strategies—around which a series of forums and activities were held. A mobile phone contest was held at the congress as competing smart phone titans Samsung and HTC both released the newest models of their flagship series, the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge and the HTC One M9, respectively. Microsoft also released the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, affordable mid-range smart phones, while Blackberry unveiled a new prototype featuring a dual-curbed, all-touch display and a sliding keyboard.
Exhibiting at MWC were approximately 30 Taiwanese companies. ASUS showcased the world’s first smartphone to use 4GB RAM, the Zenfone 2, while Acer followed up with the Liquid Jade Z. MediaTek also drew plenty of attention with their display of processors and solutions for its wearable devices and next-generation mobile phones.
The COMPUTEX d&i awards will continue on to Hannover, Germany for CeBIT, the last stop on the tour for its 2014 winners. Entries for the 2015 awards are open until March 31st, and TAITRA anticipates a new record in competitiveness.
