The 2014 Taiwan International Medical & Healthcare Exhibition (Medicare Taiwan) opens on June 19 at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1, in conjunction with SenCare (Taiwan International Senior Lifestyle and Health Care Show), TaiHerbs (Taiwan International Herbs & Functional Foods Expo), and P&B Taiwan (Taiwan International Parent & Baby Industry Show). In the opening ceremony, Dr. Ming-Neng Shiu, Vice Minister, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Mr. Chen-Fu Wang, Chief of Secretary, Bureau of Foreign Trade, and Mr. Peter W.J. Huang, President & CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), have all expressed that by making good use of the comparative advantage Taiwan enjoys in integrating medical devices with medical services, Taiwan not only offers her people better care, but also gains inroads into the growing global medical market.
Huang states that according to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK), the global market for medical devices is estimated to reach US$368.4 billion in 2015. Despite global economic uncertainty in recent years, the medical industry market continues to grow. The 4-in-1 mega show creates an ideal platform for one-stop shopping for trade visitors home and abroad, along with 20-plus professional symposiums, conferences and seminars that will help participants in grasping latest industry trends.
Wang indicates that the growth rates of the medical industry in emerging markets such as Mainland China, India, and Southeastern Asia reach double-digits every year. The Bureau of Foreign Trade assists Taiwan companies in developing overseas markets, by organizing Medicare Taiwan and inviting overseas buyers to visit, as well as by organizing country pavilions in medical shows worldwide through TAITRA and the Taiwan Medical and Biotech Industry Association. Moreover, the Bureau collaborates with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to lower technical entry barrier into new markets, by negotiating favorable terms for Taiwan products in obtaining certifications in foreign countries.
Dr. Shiu adds that with the global recognition that Taiwan medical product development and health care system receive, the Ministry hopes to showcase in the theme pavilion in Medicare 2014, the efforts Taiwan has put into cloud healthcare self-management systems, promotion of elderly-friendly healthcare, enhancement of public mental health, promotion of assistive device, long-term healthcare insurance system, hospice care, smart use of medicine and the development of herbal medicines, to local and international visitors alike.
