-The export of Spanish citrus fruits, especially lemons and oranges, to China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore has risen dramatically over the last three years
-The economic growth and consequent increase in purchasing power in these countries partly explains this striking rise: their populations are increasingly demanding quality products such as those produced in Spain
-The large Asian distribution chains prioritise food safety and certification ahead of other issues
-The Spanish company URIA EXPORT, with a long tradition in exporting, is looking for distributors for its products in Asia in readiness for the citrus season starting in October
Vitoria, July, 7th 2015. The data is the data, and it never, or almost never, lies. And this data says that Spanish citrus fruit is a huge success in Asia, with a dramatic increase in exports in the last three years. China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore have fallen in love with Spanish oranges and lemons. Only this can explain, for example, that the sales of Spanish lemons to distributors and wholesalers in Hong Kong and Malaysia have increased by nearly 2,000% in two years, in terms of cash flow in dollars, according to data from the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Contrade).
The figures for the export of oranges to these countries are even more impressive. Because the increase in Hong Kong is more than 7,000%, and in Malaysia, 10,000% (tables are attached). In the latter country, spending has risen from just 14,000 dollars in 2013 to over 1.5 million dollars in 2014, a trend expected to continue this year and in future years. And special mention should be made of China, which has gone from zero spending on Spanish oranges in 2012 and 2013 to almost 1.4 million in 2014.
And what is the reason for this spectacular increase? At URIA EXPORT, a Spanish company with a long tradition of exporting fruit and vegetables and whose strong point is precisely citric fruits, there is no doubt about the answer.
“There are two aspects to bear in mind. On the one hand, the economic growth that is occurring in these countries, which means an improvement in the eating habits of the population. Wholesalers and large retail chains are simply responding to a more demanding requirement by buying quality products like those produced in Spain. As a company, we also offer optimal food safety certification which places us at an advantage with respect to our competitors,” explains Enara Escobosa, Export Business Technician at URIA EXPORT.
The right time
The Spanish company has accumulated a quarter century of experience in growing and exporting fresh fruit and vegetables. It currently works in the markets of Europe, Brazil and Canada and now seeks stable distributors in Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Korea. “We think it’s an ideal time because of the increase in demand and because we have a lot to offer: our products are good, cared for from their point of origin, and we know the sector very well and are very reliable and professional,” emphasises Escobosa.
Added to this is the extensive experience as an export company. “We will have a person of Asian origin as manager of the department in Asia. We are able to adapt to what the customer needs and requests from us. And we take care of everything: talking to the producers, acquiring all the necessary certification and carrying out the delivery at the requested place,” she affirms.
The company will be attending the annual ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA in Hong Kong, from 2 to 4 September, the most important international trade fair for the marketing of fresh fruit and vegetables in Asia. Without doubt, an ideal place for making new contacts.
