Innovative household design solutions created by Hong Kong students to improve the daily lives of people with dementia are featured in the new “art in mtr – roving art” exhibition that opened today (2 August 2015) at MTR Tin Hau Station and Yau Tong Station.

Entitled “Social Innovation Inventor – Competition for Innovative Design”, the exhibition showcases winning entries from a contest in which groups of students from secondary and tertiary institutions were challenged to design a kitchen and a flat in a limited area to improve the home environment for elderly people suffering from early dementia. The designs on display incorporate a variety of creative ideas ranging from foot – controlled water taps, water-saving valves and clearly-labelled cupboards, to widening corridors for the convenience of wheelchair users, as well as putting up photos in prominent locations to allow the elderly and people with dementia to recall happy memories.

“While this competition serves as an opportunity for the younger generation to show their creative potentials, we also hope that by displaying their impressive designs in MTR stations, we can raise community awareness about the difficult everyday challenges faced by people with dementia and their families,” said Dr William Yu, Chief Executive Officer of World Green Organisation, the environmental group that organised the design competition with sponsorship from MTR Corporation.

“The innovative design ideas from young contestants provide very practical solutions to make everyday life easier for people with dementia. The works on display not only demonstrate the talent of the younger generation but also give all of us cause to reflect on the difficulties faced by people with dementia and how we can help them. MTR will continue to support youth initiatives and offer platforms such as our ‘roving art’ exhibitions to encourage our younger generations to make contributions to our society,” said Ms May Wong, General Manager - Corporate Relations of MTR Corporation.

The prize-winning designs in the competition were chosen from among 84 designs by a core judging panel based on creativity, safety standard, energy efficiency, environmental effectiveness, cost effectiveness, space usage, nostalgic element, caring design, feasibility and convenience. The winning teams of both the secondary and tertiary groups were awarded a study trip to the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom that is sponsored by the MTR Corporation.

The exhibition at Tin Hau Station and Yau Tong Station runs until 7 September before moving to Sheung Wan Station and Tiu Keng Leng Station for display from 11 September 2015 to 12 October 2015.

“art in mtr – roving art” is an on-going initiative featuring temporary art exhibitions at different MTR stations. About 10 exhibitions are held each year to promote artistic talent and the public’s appreciation of art.

Interested artists and organisations may call the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888 to enquire, or submit their proposals to the MTR Corporation direct.
