KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 2 September 2015 – The Asian Institute of Finance (AIF) is calling for professionals in the financial services industry to enter its new biennial essay competition. The inaugural theme for the essay award is “The Future of Professionalism in the Financial Services Industry in Asia: The Way Forward.” The award aims to promote greater awareness of the need for a strong culture of professionalism and ethics in the financial services industry in Asia in order to secure public trust in the industry and its long-term sustainability.
The Award is open to finance professionals working across Asia, as well as Asian citizens working in financial services industry outside of Asia. The judging panel of senior business leaders, academics and journalists will be looking for entries in particular which contain practical and innovative solutions to raise the bar of professionalism, including ethics, in the financial services industry in Asia. The winning essay will receive a prize of US$20,000 and the closing date for submissions is 30 September 2015.
Dr Raymond Madden, Chief Executive Officer of AIF, said “this is an opportunity for individuals working in the industry to articulate their views on the importance of professionalism and ethics in the financial services industry, the changes that ought to happen, and the pressing challenges that must be overcome to ensure progress as well as harmonisation in the development and advocacy of standards of professionalism and conduct across the industry in Asia.”
Award Rules
The AIF Award for Essays on Professionalism in the Financial Services Industry is open to all individuals who, at the date of the submission of their essays, are at least 21 years of age and either; (i) citizens of an Asian country and working in the financial services industry regardless of the country in which they are living and working, or (ii) living and working in the financial services industry in an Asian country regardless of their nationality. The financial services industry encompasses all financial institutions and associated consultancies operating within the banking, capital markets and insurance sectors both in conventional and Islamic finance.
To participate in the Award, entrants must first register their interest through an Expression of Interest Form (EIF). The EIF, which can be downloaded from the Award official website, must be electronically submitted to award@aif.org.my. An Official Entry Form, together with the Official Terms and Conditions of the Award, will be provided to entrants upon such registration of interest. Such registration of interest will not commit entrants to participate in the Award.
The essay must not exceed 5,000 words and must be submitted by 30 September 2015.
The Panel of Judges consists of prominent international executives from the financial services industry, as well as leading academics and journalists. Members of the panel of judges are:

• Mr Youssef Nasr, Faculty Member, The ICLIF Leadership and Governance Centre
• Mr John Plender, Senior Editorial Writer & Columnist, Financial Times, UK
• Dr Rodney Wilson, Emeritus Professor, International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF)
The first place winner will be awarded US$20,000 and the Award presentation ceremony will be held in Malaysia early next year. The AIF will also award US$10,000 and US$5,000 to the second and third place winners, respectively.
