Harry Williamson (Australia); Vivian Cheng (Hong Kong); Prof. He Ren Ke– Dean, School of Design, Hunan University (China); and Jung-Ya Hsieh, Founder, GIXIA Group (Taiwan) among 9-member strong jury
The Golden Pin Design Award–an annual award administered by the Taiwan Design Center in Taipei that seeks to raise global awareness for design created for and within huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities–today announces its line up for its 2015 Final Selection Jury.
Four international design professionals–from Australia, Hong Kong, China, and Japan–and five Taiwanese designers, scholars, and business leaders make up the nine-member strong judging team. The jury will select, through an independent voting system, 15-20 Golden Pin Best of the Best Design Award winners from among this year’s 400+ Design Mark winners and Finalists.
Influential Australian graphic designer and 2013 Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame inductee, Harry Williamson, is joining the Golden Pin Final Selection Jury for the first time. While he may be new to the Golden Pin Design Award, he is, however, already familiar with design in the region: he was one of just 10 finalists in the Taiwan’s International Invitational Tang Prize Medal Design Competition.
Vivian Cheng, an internationally renowned product designer from Hong Kong, is another international member of the Best Design judging team. Cheng has long been an advocate for huaren design, having served as International Liaison Manager in Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) before founding her own consultancy and product development company, Vivian Design, in 2014.
He Ren Ke, Dean and Professor, School of Design, Hunan University, and an active head and member of numerous local and national design organizations, joins from China.
The 2015 Final Selection Jury is chaired, for the second year in a row, by world-renowned Japanese product designer, Naoto Fukasawa, and the five Taiwanese jury members include Jung-Ya Hsieh, Founder, GIXIA Group, THAT Inventions, and SquareX; Tony K.M. Chang, Executive Board Member, International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID); Apex Pang-Soong Lin, Honorary Director, Taiwan Cultural and Creative Industry Association; Wang Hsin-Kong (David), Founder, Hsin Kong Wang Design Company; and Wei Hsiung Chan, Founder, Business Next Magazine.
“We’re honored to have such prestigious professionals in the Golden Pin Final Selection Jury in 2015,” says Wenlong Chen, CEO of the Taiwan Design Center. “Despite the diverse and, in some cases, highly international backgrounds of the nine jury members this year, they are all familiar with the needs and wants of the huaren community and are experts on design coming from and being created for this community–in-depth knowledge that we consider to be essential for a member of the Golden Pin Design Award jury. As such, I’m confident in the ability of our jury to assess our already excellent Design Mark winners and fairly select just a handful of those winners on which to bestow the coveted Best Design honor.”
Also new to the award this year is the Golden Pin Buyers Award, a Special Award aimed at honoring products that have a strong chance of success in the Taiwan market. In two rounds, one held on October 6, 2015, and the other from October 27-29, a panel of professional buyers from leading retailers in Taiwan will select the winners of this Special Award from among the Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Design Mark recipients. The winning products will be available for sale in a pop-up shop held in collaboration with SOGO department stores from December 1 this year.
Between July and August 2015, the Golden Pin Design Award wrapped up both its online preliminary selection and a series of secondary selection legs in China. Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Design Mark winners, all of whom are eligible to be named Best Design award winners, will be announced in late September. Final Selection judging, in which the Best Design winners will be selected, will take place in Taipei on October 5, 2015. Best Design winners will be announced in a dramatic ceremony held in Taipei in early December.
About the Golden Pin Design Award
The Golden Pin Design Award is an annual award, administered by the Taiwan Design Center in Taipei, that seeks to raise global awareness for huarendesign by recognizing innovative products and projects that cater to the expectations, desires, and needs of huaren consumers. The Award welcomes entries from individuals and corporations anywhere in the world that are selling, manufacturing, or designing products for or in Chinese-speaking (huaren) communities. The award, now in its 34th year, accepts product design, visual communication, packaging, and spatial design works. Entered products and projects are assessed in three stages by an expert international jury. Second stage winners receive a Golden Pin Design Mark. Of these winners, just 15 to 20 receive a Best Design Award.
