The winners of the Home Style Award 2015 were officially honored at an awards ceremony on 17 September 2015, the opening day of this year’s Interior Lifestyle China. Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. and iF Design Asia joined forces this year to bring a new face to the Home Style Award. The award recognizes outstanding designs, aims to drive forward the development of the international household products industry, and provides a platform to showcase the latest trends in contemporary interior design.
286 entries from 13 countries were submitted in the following categories: Kitchen / Tableware, Furniture / Lighting, Stationery / Gifts, Textiles / Wall / Floor / Decoration and Home Style Concept. Home Style Concept is a new category for participants to enter concepts representing their corporate or brand image, or to submit products and services.
A jury session took place on September 15th and 16th in Shanghai, with the international jury panel of six experts from five countries convening to closely examine, discuss and evaluate all entries in the competition. A total of 47 entries were selected as the winners of the Home Style Award 2015. The winning entries impressed the jury with their ground-breaking concepts and their innovative designs. The five most outstanding entries took home the top prize: the Home Style Gold Award.
The jury panel included Carl Liu (BMW DesignworksUSA Shanghai), Erdmann Kilian (Messe Frankfurt GmbH, Germany), Kazushige Miyake (Miyake Design, Japan), Lidan Liu (designaffairs china), Qingyung Ma (MADA s.p.a.m) and Thomas Feichtner (Studio Thomas Feichtner). The jury members evaluated the entries based on the following criteria: innovation and creativity, design quality, workmanship, choice of materials, environmental compatibility, functionality, utility, safety, ergonomics and universal design.

Jury’s opinion: The Cockhorse is simple, warm and cute, and very delightful. It has a plain look but with unique graphical quality. Its simple material works out very well.

Jury Members’ Biographies:
Carl Liu is the founder of the eponymous brand, specializing in creating top quality products for a sustainable lifestyle. Additionally, he is Director Design at BMW DesignworksUSA in Shanghai where the focus is both on BMW automotive design and on developing sophisticated design and marketing strategies for international companies. Previously, Carl worked at Ideadao Design, Walt Disney, Intel, Motorola and Astro Studios.
Erdmann Kilian trained in banking after taking a degree in languages, business and cultural studies at Passau University. Since September 2011, he has been director of the Marketing Communication/Press Department of the Ambiente and Tendence consumer-goods fairs. Since November 2014, he has also managed the Nordstil regional consumer-goods fair in Hamburg/Germany. In his position, he is responsible for all aspects of national and international press and PR work for these three trade fair brands.
Kazushige Miyake was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1973. Having graduated from the product design department at Tama Art University, he relocated to England and, after gaining further experience at a design office, he returned to Japan in 1999. Upon his return, he worked at design offices in Japan before establishing miyake design in 2005. His clients include famous brands, such as Muji, Yamaha and etc.
Lidan Liu is CEO of designaffairs China, the Asian branch of the owner-led strategic design consulting agency headquartered in Munich, Germany. Lidan graduated in industrial design from the University of Essen. She worked for, among others, the MEDION design center Germany, XLPLUS Design and the Folkwang University.
Ma Qingyun earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in Architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1988, and in 1991, he received his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Through his academic and professional experience, he developed a keen business sense centered on design intelligence, which culminated in his establishment of MADA s.p.a.m in 1996. He also founded spamALL as a design incubator in Beijing’s world renowned 751 and co-founded GalleryALL for contemporary design in LA and Beijing. In 2007, he became the dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California. He has also been named one of the world’s most influential designers by BusinessWeek.
Thomas Feichtner is an established Austrian product designer who works and resides in Vienna. He focuses on artistic aspects of, and experimental approaches to, design. His clients include companies such as J&L Lobmeyr, Neue Wiener Werkstätten, Absolut Wodka, Augarten Porzellan¬manufaktur and Carl Mertens. He has realized independent projects in cooperation with Thonet, Vitra and FSB. Many of his products have received design awards and have been included in renowned exhibitions. In 2011, he received the Austrian State Prize for Design.
