Designers of the 13 shortlisted projects will attend the lavish Golden Pin award ceremony in December
Following the announcement of 45 finalists in late August 2015, the Golden Pin Concept Design Award has announced a 13 project-strong shortlist.
Shortlisted participants are invited to attend the Golden Pin Design Award ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan, on December 10, and are in the running to receive one of three Best Design of the Year Awards, each worth NT$300,000 (approx. US$9,800) or one of ten Golden Pin Concept Design Awards, each worth NT$10,000 (approx. US$330).
In 2015, entered works must be inspired by or interpreted through philosophies and ideologies from the huaren world, as well as the Chinese concept of zhong guan (中觀). Winners receive one of 13 cash prizes, awarded at a ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan in December. Among the 13 shortlisted entries in the Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2015 are:
GOGOBIKE, a concept design in Taiwan by Yeh Shih-Yu, proposes a new shopping bicycle for Asian fe-males. The tri-wheeled bicycle, which supports a large box-style basket at the front, features a central sepa-ration mechanism, meaning the user can disconnect the front end of the bicycle from the back. The front end then becomes a trolley-style shopping cart. Once finished shopping, the user simply reconnects the two parts of the bicycle and rides home.
The Lungs of the City–Houjing Ecological Purification Park is a Spatial Design submission from Liao Zhe-Wei that proposes a forest park be incorporated into a large oil refinery in Taiwan’s industrial southern city of Kaohsiung.
As in other areas of the world in 2015, the rights of the LGBT community are an important contemporary topic in Taiwanese society. Li Cheng-Yang’s Rainbow Forest attempts to encourage understanding using an open, outdoor public installation that filters light through its roof into the spectrum of colors that make up the symbolic rainbow flag.
It is no secret that the skies of many cities in China are regularly obscured with harmful smog. With the poster, Cloud Is Die, Fu Yifu seeks to remind people to pay attention to protecting the environment. Black carbon is used to write a Chinese word related to clouds in heavy script.
INK-MAGNETIC FLUID WATCH by Han Ye used internal magnets to arrange an ink-like substance on the surface of the watch. Even if the watch is shaken, the “ink” will resettle on the face of the watch in the shape of traditional watch hands. The designers hope that watch concept can bring traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy into everyday modern life.
Lin Yong-Xiang brings us The Hell Is The Heart, a poster series that questions how we view our daily cir-cumstances. According to the designer, the title of the poster series means “Hell or Heaven is only a flash in the mind.” The heart knows best how to judge good from bad, the designer says, suggesting people should follow their instincts more often rather than overanalyzing situations.
Final Selection Jury Member Vivian Cheng, who is Creative Director of Vivian Design in Hong Kong, noted that the overall quality of the submitted works that she reviewed was very high. She was especially excited by the works in the Product Design and Visual Communications Design categories.
Taddy Ho–Final Selection Jury Chair; Director, Operating Committee, BBDO Taiwan Advertising Co. Ltd; and Visiting Professor, Department of Visual Communication Design, National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA)–said he was less astounded by the projects he reviewed this year. While computers and other mod-ern technologies offer designers many positive and useful tools, he encouraged designers to also get out into the world to find their inspiration from people and society. He felt that there was still a lot of possibili-ties for designers to explore within the theme of the competition and its focus on the huaren (Chinese-speaking) world, and looks forward to seeing more inspiring entries in the coming years of the award.
Designers of these conceptual projects–submitted in four award categories: Product Design, Packaging Design, Spatial Design, and Visual Communication Design–have gone through a rigorous selection process to feature on this shortlist. Following the submission of 2,384 entries from 17 areas and countries at the close of July 2015, the designs were narrowed down 45 in a Primary Selection round, with the Finalist list officially announced on Thursday, August 27, 2015.
Finalists also had the opportunity to participate in a Stars of Design Exchange Meeting, held in late August in Taipei. Award Finalists introduced their entries in a ten minute presentation, either in person or via video call, to a panel of leading Taiwanese design industry Mentors. Finalists were then given the opportunity to revise and resubmit their works based on the feedback they received.
The recipients of three Best Design of the Year Awards, each worth NT$300,000 (approx. US$9,800), and ten Golden Pin Concept Design Awards, each worth NT$10,000 (approx. US$330), will be announced at the lavish Golden Pin Design Award ceremony held in the historic Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Tai-pei, Taiwan, on December 10, 2015.
