Behold the transformation from old to bold. Old shoes which have been given exciting and creative makeovers take the spotlight in the latest “art in mtr – roving art” exhibition that opened today (5 November 2015) at MTR Tin Hau and Yau Tong stations. The exhibits will be on display until 7 December.
The exhibition showcases 36 prize-winning and shortlisted entries by secondary school students who participated in the “Create Your Own Shoes Competition 2015”, as well as 15 creative shoe designs by artists, fashionistas and environmental leaders. Hong Kong Green Designers Association (HKGDA) organised the competition to address the rising concerns on global shortage of natural resources and to promote eco-friendly and sustainable living through integrating environmental awareness with art and design. This aligns not only with MTR Corporation’s dedication to enhancing passengers’ life journeys through art, but also its
mission to protect the environment and provide a sustainable railway for future generations.
“When talking about consumption and waste, we usually think of food and plastic goods, and tend to overlook the high amounts of textile waste which contributes significantly to negative environmental impacts,” said Ms Rebecca Leung, Chairlady of HKGDA. “The competition and exhibition not only encourage students to explore their creative talents by transforming old shoes into works of art, but also teach them about the importance of using materials sustainably,”she added.
“It is amazing to see students ‘walk the road less travelled’ by redesigning old shoes into such masterpieces as opposed to the common ’out with the old and in with the new’ lifestyle. We are delighted to bring this exhibition and its underlying messages to our passengers,”said Ms Linda So, Corporate Affairs Director of MTR Corporation.
The exhibition at Tin Hau Station and Yau Tong Station runs until 7 December 2015 before moving to Sai Wan Ho Station and Tiu Keng Leng Station for display from 11 December 2015 to 11 January 2016.
“art in mtr – roving art” is an on-going initiative featuring temporary art exhibitions at different MTR stations. About 10 exhibitions are held each year to promote artistic talent and the public’s appreciation of art. Interested artists and organisations may call the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888 to enquire, or submit their proposals to the MTR Corporation direct.
