Made of liuli, or crystal glass, featuring a 23 carat gold plated pin, and weighing 3 kilograms, the new trophy took more than 6 months to design and 2 months to produce
In advance of a lavish December 10 award ceremony, Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award proudly announces the redesign of its official trophy. The new trophy, which is designed by Loretta Hui-shan Yang and Chang Yi of the internationally renowned Taiwanese glass art brand, LIULIGONGFANG, is made predominantly of liuli, or crystal glass, weighs 3 kilograms, and is topped with a 23 carat gold plated pin.
It took more than six months of joint creative effort by LIULIGONGFANG’s Art Director, Loretta Hui-shan Yang, and Creative Director, Chang Yi, to arrive at the final design for the new Golden Pin Design Award trophy. A three-dimensional representation of the Golden Pin Design Award logo, plated in 23 carat gold, sits atop a butterfly feature that itself crowns a vertical, rectangular body onto which the name and work of the honored winner will be engraved. The body and butterfly-themed stem of the trophy is made of liuli, or crystal glass.
Due to the temperamental production process of de-waxing casting of the liuli in thousand-degree temperatures, the different patterns and bubbles that form in the body of each trophy are unique. The butterfly that forms the stem of the trophy was inspired by the endemic Taiwanese Swallowtail and highlights both the Taiwanese origin of the Golden Pin Design Award and the award’s bright future on the international stage. In its entirety, the trophy symbolizes great ideas brewing, ascending, and transforming into the classic, timeless design works the Golden Pin Design Award seeks to celebrate.
In 2015, the new trophy will be presented to Golden Pin Design Award Best Design and Special Award winners, and Best of Golden Pin Concept Design Award winners.
The Golden Pin Design Award repositioned itself in early 2014 to celebrate product, packaging, spatial, and visual communication design works created for and within the huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities. In 2015, the three-decades-old award attracted a record-setting 2,360 entries from 10 countries around the world, and expanded the Golden Pin Award Group to include the Golden Pin Concept Design Award and two Special Awards. The competition is now preparing to name its Best Design and Special Award winners in a lavish ceremony held in Taipei, Taiwan, on December 10.
The Taiwan Design Center, who are the award executors, extended the invitation to LIULIGONGFANG; given the brand’s efforts to revive a once-lost Chinese art form and their continued international promotion of huaren aesthetics, the reason for the partnership is clear. For many, LIULIGONGFANG represents the spirit of huaren culture in the same way that the Golden Pin Design Award champions huaren design. Founded in 1987, LIULIGONGFANG today has 70 stores worldwide and in 2005 was named “Design for Asia Award (DFAA) for Most Influential Design Brand, among many other honors. The Golden Pin Design Award trophy is not the company’s first trophy redesign project: LIULIGONGFANG is also behind the design of the trophy for Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards for Chinese language cinema.
About the Golden Pin Design Award
The Golden Pin Design Award is an annual award, administered by the Taiwan Design Center in Taipei, Taiwan, that seeks to recognize innovative products and projects that cater to the expectations, desires, and needs of huaren (Chinese-speaking) consumers. The award welcomes entries from individuals and corporations anywhere in the world that are selling, manufacturing, or designing products for or within huaren communities. The Golden Pin Design Award, now in its 34th year, accepts product design, visual communication, packaging, and spatial design works. Entered products and projects are assessed in three stages by an expert international jury. Second stage winners receive a Golden Pin Design Mark. Of these Design Mark recipients, just a select few will receive a Best Design trophy.
