On Thursday, December 10, 2015, attendees at the day-long Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Forum in Taipei, Taiwan will have the rare opportunity to hear for free the stories behind the success of eight locally and globally renowned design industry and business leaders.
This year’s Forum takes the core theme “Design: Ideas Realized,” and is co-organized on behalf of the Golden Pin Design Award by CommonWealth Magazine, Fubon Art Foundation, and the Taiwan Design Center. Johnason Lo, Founder and Creative Director of Taipei-based motion graphics studio, JL Design, is a consultant. The event, which is held at the plush Eslite Spectrum Performance Hall in Taipei, is free to members of the public and features simultaneous translation in English, Japanese and Chinese. In particular, in line with the unique ethos of Taiwan’s premier international design award, the Golden Pin Design Award, the speakers will share their thoughts on design innovation for and within huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities.
The December 10 talks will take place in a morning and an afternoon session, which each feature three 20-minute talks and a panel discussion. Among the renowned speakers gracing the stage at the event is Naoto Fukasawa, a world-renowned Japanese industrial designer and Chair of the Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Final Selection Jury; Lyndon Neri, one half of the Shanghai-based, globally influential spatial and product design studio, Neri&Hu Design & Research Office; and William To, Creative and Programme Director for PMQ, one of Hong Kong’s most innovative department store concepts, and Senior Consultant for the Hong Kong Design Centre.
Session 1 runs from 9.30AM–12.10PM, and includes three speakers and a moderated panel session with four speakers. Special guest speaker Naoto Fukasawa will open the session in a 15-minute speech. Vivian Cheng, an industrial designer and design studio founder based between Hong Kong and Copenhagen, and a member of the Final Selection Juries for the Golden Pin Design Award and the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, will discuss the hidden power that huaren culture holds for designers. Katsutoshi Ishibashi, Editor in Chief of long-running Tokyo-based bilingual design magazine, AXIS, will explore how design thinking can connect within and between cultures.
To wrap up the first session, Katsutoshi Ishibashi and Vivian Cheng will join Page Tsou, Art Director of Taipei-based studio Auspicious that has worked on projects for companies like Disney, YAMAHA, and Moët & Chandon, and Chris Chienwei Huang, Head of Creative at YOW!Design in Taiwan, which is behind the popular office accessories brand, Urban Prefer, in a 20-minute panel moderated by Yin-Chuen Wu, Director of CommonWealth Magazine. The panel will discuss the ways in which huaren creativity can and is influencing other parts of the world.
Session 2 runs from 1.30PM–3.40PM, and also includes three speakers and a moderated panel session with four speakers. As the second special guest speaker, Liao Mei-li, president of Flâneur Culture Lab, will open the afternoon session. William To from PMQ will discuss how design can be utilized to craft never-before-seen landscapes in what seems an ordinary life. Lyndon Neri of Neri&Hu Design & Research Office in Shanghai will talk about how the distinctive preferences of huaren consumers influence space design.
Li Xue Li, a senior correspondent in Taiwan, will moderate the panel for this second session, which features speakers Lyndon Neri and William To as well as Grace Wang, one of four partners in the ever-expanding VVG Lifestyle Village in Taipei–which took home a Best Design trophy in the 2014 edition of the Golden Pin Design Award–and the trend-setting hospitality, retail, and food-and-beverage group’s manager, and Sheng-Yuan Huang, Principal at Fieldoffice Architects in Taiwan. About the Golden Pin Design Award
The Golden Pin Design Award repositioned itself in early 2014 to celebrate product, packaging, spatial, and visual communication design works already on the market that were created for and within the huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities. In 2015, the three-decades-old award attracted a record-setting 2,360 entries from 10 countries around the world, and expanded the Golden Pin Award Group to include the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, the Young Pin Design Award, and two Special Awards.
The competition is now preparing to name its Best Design and Special Award winners in a lavish ceremony held on December 10, 2015, at the Eslite Spectrum Performance Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. The Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Forum will also be held on the same day and in the same venue, and an exhibition of 2015 Golden Pin Design Award winning products and projects will open at the Taiwan Design Museum.
The Golden Pin Award group is executed by the Taiwan Design Center and organised by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Economic Affairs acts in an advisory capacity, and the award is sponsored by Canmeg AVEDA.
