Bangkok: Energy experts are scheduled to discuss efforts to enhance renewable energy policies among ASEAN countries at the inaugural international three-day exhibition and conference titled the Sustainable Energy & Technology Asia (SETA) 2016. Being held from 23-25 March in BITEC Bangkok this year, Thailand will play host to one of Asia’s biggest energy meet, post COP21.

The ASEAN Center for Energy, or ACE, will organize a side-event alongwith the main conference to analyze the impact of renewable energy policies for the development of the industry in 10 ASEAN member states. ACE will present Support Programmes that would help to foster the development of the renewable energy sector in the region with the delegates of the side event.

“The ASEAN Member States should share at SETA 2016 the initiatives agreed in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025, with the regional theme of enhancing energy connectivity and market integration in ASEAN to achieve energy security, accessibility, affordability and sustainability for all,” said ACE’s Executive Director Ir. Dr. Sanjayan Velautham. “An international platform like SETA 2016 which gathers policy makers, the private sector, dialogue partners and international organizations from Southeast Asia and across the globe would provide an opportunity for the ASEAN member nations to discuss challenges and find solutions with different perspectives in order to achieve energy security and sustainability for their citizens,” Dr. Velautham commented.

Apart from the ‘must-attend’ ACE forum, the Economic Research Institute for Asia, or ERIA, will organize an informative plenary session alongside the main conference to make a first colloquy on Asia’s stance to support the historical Paris Agreement on the elimination of the greenhouse gas emissions adopted at the recent United Nations’ Conference of Paris on climate change, or COP21. The forum will feature as a platform for discussions on how ASEAN and East Asian nations can deal with climate change following the Paris Agreement.

In addition, ERIA President Mr. Hidetoshi Nishimura will be one of the keynote speakers at the SETA conference. SETA 2016 will gather more than 300 delegates including policy makers, academia and both government and private stake holders from more than 15 countries for international, governmental and industrial discussions and collaboration on developing sustainable energy policies for the region’s future economic development. The event is expected to draw around 2,500 visitors and delegates from the power, energy, technology, utility and transport industries, with 4 main topics comprehensively covering Energy policies, Electrical Systems Technology, Transportation and Alternative Fuels and Sustainable Energy and Green Technology Masakazu Toyoda, Chairman and CEO of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) said that SETA 2016 can be expected to provide an excellent opportunity in the energy arena for leaders from governments, experts from academia and executives from business society from all over the world to get together and to exchange their views for the purpose of realizing sustainable developments in ASEAN just after Paris Agreement in COP 21.

“SETA is also anticipated to demonstrate cutting-edge technologies available to realize sustainable development and to find pragmatic solutions for policy makers,” Mr Toyoda said.

Besides, several world leading companies in electricity generation such as Mitsubishi-Hitachi Power System Ltd and Siemens will also share their insights, experience and competency in coal-fired technology for power generation, while Alstom and Toyota will showcase the state-of-the art vehicle technology using alternative fuels. Participants at SETA 2016 would find several opportunities to collaborate with suitable partners and gain lessons learned from implementation of others’ policies to promote sustainable energy. The private sector would also be able to explore untapped markets that would benefit from their services as well as their sustainable and green technologies and gain insights on policies that would further facilitate their businesses.

Supported by Thai government and private sector organizations and associations, SETA 2016 opening ceremony will be Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Air Chief Marshal Prajin Chantong of Thailand on March 23 . On the same day, H.E. General Anantaporn Kanjanarat, Energy Minister of Thailand and Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water of Malaysia will deliver Special Keynote Address on the challenges for promoting renewable energy and nuclear energy in ASEAN. SETA 2016 is organized by GAT International Co., LTD.,
