Latest Healthcare Equipment, Technology & Solutions Spotlighted
3 May 2016 – The seventh HKTDC Hong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair opened today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Medical and Healthcare Device Industries Association (HKMHDIA), the three-day fair (3-5 May) showcases the latest medical equipment, technology and related services, providing a one-stop business platform for the healthcare industry.
This year’s Medical Fair features more than 260 exhibitors from 12 countries and regions. The HKTDC has also organised 37 buying missions to the fair comprising more than 1,300 buyers, including Russia’s Royal Medical Trading Co Ltd, Poland’s Novamed sp. Zoo, Slovakia’s Pharma Care, Taiwan’s Hon International Trade Co. Ltd. and Ziwell Medical (S) Pte Ltd. from Singapore.
“People’s emphasis on health, the ageing population and the challenge posed by new viruses have heightened the global demand for healthcare products,” said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. “Together with the continued advancement in medical products and technologies and the rapid development of the medical devices and healthcare industries, immense business opportunities abound in the medical supplies market. The Medical Fair features an assortment of product zones, including the Household Medical Products Zone and the Rehabilitation and Elderly Care Zone, to provide industry players with a comprehensive business platform to capture these opportunities.”
Product zones showcase the latest medical equipment and technology
Pavilions returning to the fair include the Shenzhen Association of Medical Devices Pavilion and the HKMHDIA Pavilion; with the latter comprising more than 30 companies. Companies from Sweden, Vietnam and Pakistan are making their debut at the Medical Fair, with Pakistan staging a pavilion for the first time.
This year’s Medical Fair features 15 product zones showcasing a broad selection of healthcare products and services. One of the highlights is the Household Medical Products Zone, catering to the growing demand for household medical products and services. Displays include a stair-climber, which can be applied to most wheelchair models and used on any type of stairs, and a locally developed mobile electrocardiograph device. Responding to the keen demand for medical and surgical devices, the Hospital Equipment Zone showcases an assortment of electro-medical equipment, including ultrasound and imaging devices and surgical instruments.
The Tech Exchange Zone offers matching opportunities for potential investors and research institutions with a view to commercialising prototypes. A number of tertiary education institutions are displaying their latest innovations at the zone. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is showcasing a novel endoluminal drug delivery device that can be used to treat conditions such as aneurysm and, at the same time, reduce the risk of blood vessel walls rupturing. For the silver market, the Rehabilitation and Elderly Care Zone is presenting products and services targeting elderly care and rehabilitation, which include the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s mastectomy bra and prosthesis, designed to prevent heat and moisture build-up. At the Physiotherapy Zone, the latest physiotherapy equipment, instruments and related services and products are on display. They include rollers, braces, exercise paraphernalia and more. In response to the growing demand for medical testing, the Laboratory Equipment Zone spotlights different types of testing equipment, including an air sampler used by the Seoul Research Institute of Public Health and Environment during the MERS outbreak in Korea last year.
Intelligence sharing on the latest industry trends
The HKTDC is organising a series of seminars, forums and workshops throughout the Medical Fair to help industry professionals gather market intelligence and expand their business networks. Industry experts will analyse topics ranging from the latest industry developments to international regulations for medical devices. The events include today’s seminar on “The Latest Trends and Technologies Shaping the Medical and Healthcare Device Industries” and the continuing medical education (CME) workshop on “New Advances of PTCA/s 2016”, which is co-organised by the Hong Kong Doctors Union.
Tomorrow’s events include the continuing nursing education (CNE) workshop on “New Medical Device Regulations in China and Their Implications for Businesses” co-organised by the Hong Kong Health Care Federation and the buyer forum on “Opportunities in the Belt and Road Markets”, while the “Worldwide Medical Device Regulatory Updates” seminar will be held on 5 May.
Professor John Leong Chi-yan, Chairman of Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority, was the officiating guest at today’s networking reception. The Hospital Authority is organising its annual Hospital Authority Convention (3-4 May), which is one of the region’s largest healthcare conferences, generating synergy with the Medical Fair. Last year, more than 5,000 healthcare professionals attended the convention. Also held in parallel with the Medical Fair is the Asia Biotech Invest Conference (5 May), which offers biotech companies in the Asia-Pacific region a platform for cooperation and information exchange.
