In the final round of the ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge 2016 (ASC16), Zhejiang University performed spectacularly as a dark horse among 16 finalists, including Nanyang Technological University, Hong Kong Baptist University, Boston Green Team, Universidad EAFIT in Columbia, University of Miskolc in Hungary, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, etc. ZJU ranked 1st in 3 of 6 sections and achieved the highest-ever LINPACK score, thus winning the Highest Linpack Award and the 1st prize in the final competition.
In the final competition, ZJU broke the record set by Jamia Millia Islamia University in India at the ISC 2015 Student Cluster Competition at 12.03Tflops in performance testing using HPLinpack as a yardstick. More challenging was the MASNUM_WAM application question in which candidates had to complete code porting from CPU to a hybrid framework of CPU/GPU. ZJU made a breakthrough in creating a pioneering GPU version.
The ZJU team was headed by Chen Jianhai of the College of Computer Science and Technology and was composed of sophomores and juniors, including Shan Ting, Cao Shuxiang, Xu Qiyuan, Zhu Dinghan, He Yu, Chen Xingmou, Sun Yaozhu, etc. The content of the final stage covered HPL performance optimization, performance optimization of HPGG, performance optimization of MASNUM_WAM, performance optimization of ABINIT, performance optimization of the Mystery Application and performance of optimization of the DNN program. In the competition, the power consumption of every team must be under 3000W. Within the limit of the power consumption, the team should design the system to achieve the best performance of test applications.
