NEW DELHI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WSO2.Telco, a joint venture of Axiata Digital and WSO2, today announced that India’s six leading mobile network operators (MNOs) are using the WSO2.Telco digital enablement hub to deliver the GSMA Mobile Connect mobile-based authentication solution. Together the MNOs Aircel, Bharti Airtel, Idea, Tata Teleservices Ltd, Telenor and Vodafone serve more than 800 million consumers across India1.

The solution delivers unprecedented ease of use for mobile users, who can securely access a range of websites, apps and services by using their unique mobile numbers for identification. It also marks a new milestone of collaboration among the six MNOs in India, who worked together with the GSMA and WSO2.Telco to implement a cloud-based hub that would deliver a consistent mobile authentication experience to all of their mobile subscribers.

“The GSMA’s Mobile Connect solution is empowering mobile operators to drive the next generation of digital identity where users gain control over their own data. That is why, from the start, we have made Mobile Connect a core offering of our WSO2.Telco digital enablement hub for MNOs,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, CEO of WSO2.Telco. “With the launch of the hub for six of India’s leading MNOs, we are significantly expanding the reach of Mobile Connect to mobile consumers, and we now power more than 40 per cent of the 2.8 billion Mobile Connect-enabled users worldwide.”

Today more than 42 operators in 22 countries are implementing Mobile Connect. Among them are nearly all of the majority-owned MNOs of Axiata, one of Asia’s largest telecommunications companies and a pioneer with the world’s first commercial launch of Mobile Connect in late 2014. Now Axiata MNOs rely on the company’s WSO2.Telco implementation to provide Mobile Connect authentication and other digital services.

“We are excited to extend our support for the GSMA and the Mobile Connect authentication solution, which enhances the user experience and security in accessing websites and applications—without the need for multiple passwords or usernames,” said Mohd Khairil Abdullah, CEO of Axiata Digital. “Through our investments in advanced next-generation platforms, such as WSO2.Telco in India and soon other countries, we are committed to further accelerating the pace of global adoption for Mobile Connect and other similar services for our subscribers and other MNO customers, as well as service providers.”

GSMA Mobile Connect for Simple, Secure Access

The GSMA’s Mobile Connect solution enables customers to create and manage a digital universal identity via a single login solution. The service simply and securely authenticates users, enabling them to digitally confirm their identity and their credentials and grant safe online access to mobile and digital services. Mobile Connect works by employing the user’s unique mobile number, combined with a unique PIN for more secure use cases, to verify and grant online access.

The service will be used commercially by a wide range of digital service providers in areas, such as commerce, finance and banking, government service access, health services, and media and entertainment. Initially, Indian mobile subscribers will be able to access Mobile Connect services, including login and self-care apps, from their operator’s website; in the future, this will extend to anywhere they see the Mobile Connect logo. Information on Mobile Connect is available on the operators’ websites. Additionally, the GSMA has launched a portal ( www.mobileconnect.in) where Indian consumers can find further information on Mobile Connect, as well as videos on how they can use it.

The WSO2.Telco-Powered Mobile Connect Advantage

The Mobile Connect service in India is powered by the WSO2.Telco API-driven digital enablement hub. Built on the powerful open source WSO2 middleware, the cloud-based hub enables MNOs to expose, manage and orchestrate multiple network services at a fraction of the cost of legacy systems. Because the service is fully managed by WSO2.Telco on behalf of the six MNOs in India, it has allowed the companies to rapidly go to market with a consistent offering for consumers.

At the same time, solution providers who work with the MNOs benefit by being able to offer the all the benefits of Mobile Connect, including an easy, intuitive user experience along with robust security. Significantly, solution providers are gaining access to what is by far the largest hub in India, enabling them to reach a majority of mobile consumers in India through a single integration with the WSO2.Telco-powered hub.
