Singapore, July 26, 2016 --(ASIA TODAY)-- Continental, the international automotive supplier and technology company today signed an MOU with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to support a three-year Bachelor of Engineering with Honours programme in Telematics (Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering). This programme is a first of its kind offered in Singapore and the collaboration with a local university is also Continental’s first. At the event, Continental together with its ITS Lab partners, A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R) and Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich, TUM CREATE), also launched the new Park&Go @SG iOS parking app and the enhanced Android version.

With the emphasis in developing and driving the Smart Nation Platform (SNP), everyone, everything, and everywhere will be connected in real time in Singapore. In line with this initiative, the Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering (Telematics) programme is timely as it involves not only transport and traffic management systems, connectivity and technology modules but a familiarity with the latest smart innovations currently expounded by R&D and university centres worldwide. Students in SIT’s Telematics degree programme who are exposed to an intimate knowledge of operational working conditions in leading-edge and telematics-driven companies such as Continental, will also be better able to respond and deal with the challenges in developing new capabilities in more efficient transport systems, vehicular communications technologies, smart mobility and connectivity devices.

Mr. Lo Kien Foh, Managing Director of Continental Automotive Singapore, and also one of the Industry Advisory Committee members at SIT, said: “As Continental does in other global markets, we are investing in the future of Singapore by collaborating with SIT in supporting ITS engineering and technology-driven training to provide student engineers with the knowledge and skill sets to meet the future demands and challenges of a Smart Nation. Continental has been working with SIT on the course programme for the past three years and I am gratified to sign this MOU with SIT to support the upcoming Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Telematics course commencing in September 2016. I am sure the programme will give both Continental and SIT an excellent platform to cross-fertilise and exchange ideas, knowledge, innovations, ITS operational concepts and best in industry practices in telematics technologies. I am confident the course will equip graduates with a well-rounded engineering capability and much needed hands-on experience to make them industry-ready for the Smart Nation.”

Professor Loh Han Tong, Deputy President (Academic) & Provost, SIT said, “As a university of applied learning, we ensure that our degree programmes are industry-focused as well as tailored to meet critical manpower demands in Singapore. With the launch of Smart Nation and Smart Mobility 2030 initiatives together with the successful bid for ITS World Congress 2019, the field of telematics and ITS in Singapore is expected to accelerate in the coming years. The Telematics (Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering) programme is the first of its kind in Singapore and will pave the way for students to become deep specialists in the relevant areas of vehicle communication and information processing. Students will go through rigorous academic training while having an eight-month Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) with MNCs such as Continental.”

Park&Go @SG is another illustration of Continental’s involvement in SNP through the ITS Lab. The parking app utilises data from diverse sources with an Ecosystem powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm to meet the needs of motorists in driver-assistance applications, dynamic routing, intelligent parking guidance and real-time traffic news delivery. The new iOS parking app and the enhanced Android version will now cover increased “live” parking spaces with seven times the number of parking lots as compared to its first launch in 2015. In addition, users can now find parking near food courts as well as washing bay lots.

Mr. Lo added: “Congratulations to our ITS Lab partners, I²R and TUM CREATE who together with Continental are launching today, the new Park&Go @SG iOS parking app as promised in 2015, as well as the enhanced Android version. With the app’s unique new features, I am convinced that through constant upgrades and the continuous collaborative work with our two partners, the parking app will become a must-have for all motorists in Singapore.”

Mr. Ralf Lenninger, Senior Vice President System Development, Innovation & Strategy at Continental, added: “Continental’s holistic approach to a variety of cutting-edge technologies in vehicle electronics, big data analytics, digitalization and connectivity enables the intelligent future of mobility. The Park&Go @SG parking app is an excellent example of live data generated on the basis of connectivity with archived and real-time data processed by means of predictive algorithms such as AI to create solutions to alleviate parking problems. This in turn results in a safer and more efficient use of transportation modes for the benefit of all. Not to mention, the enhanced features now provide the community a platform to feedback on unlisted parking locations and lot availability, all through digitalization. With this in mind, the training of engineers in telematics in Singapore will be timely and significant as the development of ITS is the only solution to a more efficient means of mobility and transportation in the cities of the future.”

About the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Telematics Programme
The Bachelor course is a three-year programme by SIT. Continental Automotive Singapore is one of the contributors for the development of the programme’s curriculum. The course focuses on core skills in electrical engineering, computer science and ITS knowledge. In addition, specialist skills in vehicular communication, telematics technologies and ITS engineering will be emphasised. This will prepare students for the future in the technically-challenging and technology-driven field of ITS engineering arena. Continental will assist SIT’s teaching staff in the course instruction as adjunct lecturers.

About Park&Go @SG
Park&Go @SG was developed by Continental in collaboration with I²R and TUM CREATE through the ITS Lab to improve the safety, efficiency, and performance of transport systems in Singapore.

Park&Go @SG, developed with information made available by HDB, LTA and URA, helps drivers find available parking places in advance in all major entertainment, F&B, retail, commercial, government buildings and public car parks in Singapore. The prediction methodology in identifying parking space is unique to Continental and the company has launched a patent for the mobile app.

The new iOS parking app and enhanced version of the Android parking app will cover an increased number of “live” parking spaces. It also allows users to provide feedback and inputs on unlisted car park venues for Continental to review and update its current data. This feature will greatly help users avoid parking congestions in areas where Electronic Parking System (EPS) or smart parking systems have not been installed.

Another new component of the Park&Go @SG app is its improved predictive capability through the use of AI in providing motorists with real-time information on available parking spaces in vicinities where events and food places attract crowds. Drivers keen on patronizing such venues with limited parking lots will be able to avoid time and fuel wastage thanks to the improved app.

The new Park&Go @SG app now also allows users to find locations of washing bays in HDB car parks. This unique feature will prevent motorists from scrambling for washing bay lots in HDB estates on weekends and public holidays. Soon, car owners will no longer need to physically queue for slots as the reservation feature for washing bay lots will be available in the near future.
