Winners and finalists of the 13th annual student competition promote a safer and more responsible cyber community for Singapore

Singapore – 25 August, 2016 --(ASIA TODAY)-- The 2016 Splash Awards, an annual national competition organised by the Singapore Computer Society today celebrated the best and brightest talent in the Infocomm and Media (ICM) industry with the announcement of this year’s winning student teams. In its 13th year, the competition aims to inspire youth in Singapore to join the ICM industry and to instil the spirit of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in them. This year’s award ceremony was graced by Dr Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Education and focused on a particularly timely and relevant topic, cyber wellness.

Mr Andrew Buay, Vice-President, Group CSR, Singtel, said “Singtel is extremely pleased to be co-organising this year’s Splash Awards with the Singapore Computer Society. Platforms like the Splash Awards can help build a talent pipeline to support the flourishing info-comm and media industry as well as the transformation of our economy.”

Commenting on the theme of this year’s award, Mr Andrew Buay said “Singapore’s high rate of internet usage and mobile penetration facilitated our shift into the digital economy but also exposed the children and youth to greater cyber risks such as device addiction and cyber bullying. This competition allows students to understand the importance of cyber wellness and help spread awareness on staying safe online.”

The Singapore Computer Society’s annual Splash Awards provides a platform to engage students through various aspects of Infocomm and digital media in a fun and creative way. The competition and subsequent awards are also developed to give students experience in solving real life challenges and to prepare them for the industry, to encourage innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship through application development.
Nicholas Aaron Khoo, Chairman, Splash Awards 2016 Steering Committee said “A key objective of the Singapore Computer Society is to allow our young members to foster relationships with one another, as well as with experts in the industry. Programs like the Splash Awards not only promote critical thinking, knowledge and expertise sharing, but also allow our members to come together to conceive’ “the next big idea’.”

“Today’s participants and winners should be celebrated as they are proof that our youth are contributing to the ICM industries of the future, and that they can achieve impressive results by working together, thinking smarter and dreaming bigger. Hard work, combined with talent, determination and a thirst for knowledge, will be their panacea for success,” Khoo added.

This year’s participants were made up of close to 90 student teams ranging from secondary schools to tertiary institutions who competed based on their submission of mobile and web applications. Participants were required to submit their entries based on one of the following sub-themes: Cyber Bullying, Making Friends Online, Sharing Personal Information Online, Cyber Security, Harmful Content & Internet/Gaming Addiction, or other relevant sub-themes related to the "Cyber Wellness" theme, and entries were evaluated based on feasibility, originality/uniqueness, creativity, relevance to theme and impact on target audience.
