By 2015, 40% of the new houses in Xiamen will be environmentally-friendly green buildings, and the construction area of buildings featuring solar energy applications is expected to reach more than 10 million square meters, according to a recent government meeting on energy saving and emissions reduction.

Over the next few years, green buildings and solar energy products will be greatly promoted in the government's efforts to vigorously promote energy conservation and emissions reduction in the construction area.

The city which is hot in summer and warm in winter, will promote advanced sun-shading and insulating techniques in the new buildings to improve the indoor thermal environment and reduce buildings’ energy consumption.

The Xiamen Construction and Administration Bureau said they will not only accelerate the construction of green buildings, but also transform old houses in the old towns and villages to make them more environmentally-friendly.

The city has been conducting green building evaluations since 2010. So far, 8 projects with a total construction area of 1,561,500 square meters have been identified as green buildings.

Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from location to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.
