HONG KONG, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday 31st October, ITV Granada will celebrate 50 years of the world's longest running soap, Coronation Street, with a week-long series of special programming across Asia. The anniversary will coincide with an almighty bang, as a tram crashes and the viaduct that spans the Street collapses in an explosive storyline.
Coronation Street is a story of the everyday lives of ordinary people, living in a northern English town called Weatherfield, and was created by a 23 year-old scriptwriter called Tony Warren in 1960. The award-winning soap has been captivating audiences for the past 50 years, and nearly 7,500 episodes later, the show is still in great shape. Over the last half century, it has celebrated 39 births, mourned 144 deaths, thrown confetti at 88 weddings and had drinks served by 51 barmaids!
As we head towards anniversary week, secrets and lies cloud the cobbles, and when a tram comes crashing off the viaduct, the street is changed forever, as relationships are broken and some of the show's residents stare death in the face.
The 50th anniversary week begins on ITV Granada at 7pm on Monday 29th October with the explosive tram crash, followed by the 50th birthday episode at 7pm on Wednesday 31st October.
In conjunction with the anniversary, three brand new Coronation Street specials will air throughout the week; Coronation Street: 50 Years 50 Moments, The Corrie Years and feature film; The Road to Coronation Street. Don't miss exclusive behind the scenes footage and Facebook
