First prize of USD 2,000 for best solution to water and energy sustainability issues

Abu Dhabi, January 13, 2013 -(ASIA TODAY)- In an effort to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, students and graduates will be invited to compete at a Green Ideas fair for the best solution to the twin issues of water scarcity and energy sustainability.

With the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) and the International Water Summit (IWS) just around the corner, young innovators are being encouraged to submit their entries. Up to 20 of the best technology innovations and inventions will be displayed in the exhibition area at WFES and the inaugural International Water Summit (IWS), both hosted by Masdar, held from 15-17 January 2013.

“Our ADWEA scholarships and the consistent collaboration with Masdar, invests in the leaders of tomorrow. Showcasing sustainable energy projects allows the opportunity for innovative students to present ideas that contribute to life,” said His Excellency Abdulla Saif Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA).

The Green Ideas fair, which will run alongside WFES and IWS at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, is endorsed by ADWEA. Attendees at WFES and IWS will vote for the winning entry. The innovator with most votes will win a cash prize of USD 2,000, offered by organiser, Reed Exhibitions. Second prize is USD 1,000 and third prize is USD 500.

Some of the most innovative projects that have been submitted so far include: geothermal desalination in the UAE; the production of algae-based biodiesel and converting the drag impact on moving vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and pollution of the environment.

With about 1.1 billion people lacking access to clean water and 2.5 billion people lacking access to safe sanitation, this competition is one way that young people can help address the issue and find real solutions to the challenges people face in arid regions.

Masdar is hosting both WFES and IWS as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a global platform where young innovators and entrepreneurs can come to develop and showcase their ideas for a more environmentally sustainable future.
