HAMBURG, January 30, 2013 -(ASIA TODAY)- Reduce the maintenance effort, minimise laydays, cut costs: These are the ambitious goals driving the development of new technologies for ship propulsion systems. Implementing state-of-the-art safety features that ensure uninterrupted operation during the entire equipment lifecycle and minimise the maintenance requirements of on-board systems brings these goals within reach. For example, the international FLAGSHIP development project has spawned an entire range of new commercial software applications. One of these, FLAGSHIP EEM (Energy Efficiency Monitoring), can control the main and auxiliary engines as well as the electrical system. The application captures operational data on board the ship and transmits it to an on-shore centre for analysis. The results are then sent back to the ship. By monitoring the data continuously during a voyage, error sources can be identified directly and addressed in a timely manner. This enables ship owners to lower their repair and operating costs while avoiding environmental damage.
In recent years, innovators have introduced a multitude of new technologies that enhance the operational safety of on-board machinery and reduce its susceptibility to failure. At the Public Private Partnership Summit – SMM India on Friday, 5 April, high-ranking experts will give an overview of the current status of research and future development efforts. A special session titled "Technology Infusion for Future propulsion packages with a view to minimum maintenance of shipbuilding machinery/systems on board" at SMM India (4 to 6 April), to be held at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre (Hall V), Mumbai, will feature highly distinguished panellists. Session Chairman for this topic is Vice Admiral NN Kumar, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Material, Naval Head Quarters. The session will be part of an all-day, three-session conference.
