Education & Careers Expo Opens with Over 730 Exhibitors

January 31, 2013 – More than 730 education institutions, professional associations, government departments, public organisations and private companies from 20 countries and regions are taking part in the 23rd HKTDC Education & Careers Expo, which opened today and continues through 3 February at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The expo is open to the public, with admission free. The four-day expo features two main zones, Education and Careers and, new this year, four Career Theme Days: Banking & Finance Day, Supply Chain & Logistics Day, Marketing & Management Day and Civil Service Day. In all, more than 100 events, ranging from seminars, workshops and trial tutorial classes to celebrity sessions, will take place.

On-Site Job Interviews
The Hong Kong Mediation and Arbitration Centre and two app developers are introducing career opportunities in their emerging sectors. The Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Ltd will introduce trainee programmes at its booth and also during a seminar on Sunday afternoon. Human resources exhibitor Career Partner has arranged for a number of companies, including Calvin Klein, D-mop, i.t and JFT, to conduct job interviews at its booth, while human resources agencies Adecco and Drake Overload are seeking candidates interested in part-time or short-term contract positions. A number of government departments and private enterprises, including the Hong Kong Police Force, Kerry Logistics and Ricacorp Properties, are accepting job applications at the fairground. In addition, FedEx Express and the Independent Commission Against Corruption will discuss their needs and entry requirements for various positions.

Professional bodies taking part include the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute, the Hong Kong Logistics Association, the Hong Kong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics Ltd and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Hong Kong. These, along with a variety of government departments, will help students and job-seekers gain a better understanding of industry opportunities and career options.

Interview Skills
A Saturday (2 February) workshop hosted by local theatre artist Priscilla Lai will teach participants the skills needed to succeed in interviews. The following day, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups will lead a workshop discussing strategies for Administrative Officer and Executive Officer interviews and the Hong Kong civil service’s Common Recruitment Examination. On 1 February, Simon Chan, Assistant Secretary (Further Education), at the Hong Kong Education Bureau, will host a seminar, the “Multiple Pathways under the New Academic Structure.” The same afternoon, Dr Esther Ho, Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters, and Elvis Ng, Manager and Registered Social Worker at the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, will look at options for further studies following the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) Examination. And the Trial Tutorial Class for DSE liberal studies, also on Friday afternoon, will enhance student exam techniques.

Global Education Showcase
The fair will once again feature four thematic education days, spotlighting study opportunities in the Chinese mainland (today), Australia (tomorrow), Europe (Saturday) and the United States (Sunday). The “Pilot Scheme whereby some Mainland Higher Education Institutions will Exempt Hong Kong Students from Examination for Admission” continues this year, with participating institutions increased to 70, offering expanded higher-education opportunities for Hong Kong students. The China Education Exchange (Hong Kong) Center, which provides registration confirmation and consultancy services for the scheme, will exhibit at the expo for the first time.

Representatives of the Australian Consulate-General, Austrian Trade Commission, Campus France, German Academic Exchange Service Information Centre Hong Kong & Macau, The Office of the European Union to Hong Kong and Macau and the US Commercial Service – Hong Kong & Macau will host seminars on school admission procedures, preparation for studying overseas, campus life and study culture in their respective regions. The Hok Yau Club will introduce local and overseas scholarships on Sunday afternoon.

Celebrity Sessions
This afternoon, musician and Hong Kong Film Awards'“Best New Performer” in 2011 Hanjin Tan will discuss his career in a special session. Other spotlights feature SPCA Hong Kong’s China Outreach Director Ryan Lau (tomorrow afternoon), and chef and food stylist Kit Mak (Sunday afternoon).

Lucky Draws
Visitors will have a chance to win prizes through the expo’s lucky draws, including an iPod touch each day and the grand prize of an iPad mini.
