Revisions of an urban development project that will help address housing problems and check soaring real estate prices in northern Taiwan were approved Feb. 4 by the Council for Economic Planning and Development.

“The proposed changes will add access roads, affordable or social housing and public infrastructure while attracting investment to spur development in the 1,700-hectare-plus project,” a CEPD official said.

Proposed by the ROC Ministry of the Interior and approved by the Cabinet in 1992, the project aims to construct medium-density accommodation in New Taipei City’s Danshui District. Implemented by the MOI Construction and Planning Agency, the development will go someway toward satiating heightened housing demands in northern Taiwan.

According to the official, various transportation proposals are in the pipeline for connecting the new town to Taoyuan Aerotropolis, as well as a high-tech corridor in central Taipei City and an industrial corridor in New Taipei City.

The MOI has been directed to continue communicating with local residents on issues involving environmental impact and land expropriation, the official said, adding that the ministry will conduct a comprehensive review of the project at least every three years to ensure progress benchmarks are reached.
