Dual output model saves space and cost; highest ever power output model supports largest base station cell sites

HONG KONG, CHINA-- ASIA TODAY / Media OutReach--May 8, 2014-- Artesyn Embedded Technologies, formerly Emerson Network Power's Embedded Computing & Power business, today announced two new families of high performance isolated dc-dc converters for radio-frequency (RF) power amplifiers, used in micro and macro cell, NodeB/eNodeB, and remote radio head (RRH) applications.

The first, the AVE family, is a half-brick format offering higher than 94 percent typical efficiency and excellent thermal performance, making it ideal for small space and high power applications. An aluminum baseplate structure makes it possible for the modules to operate between minus 40 and plus 85 degrees Celsius ambient temperature, and the Artesyn AVE family can continue to operate at full power up to 100 degrees Celsius baseplate temperature -- all without air cooling.

The first models in the AVE family offer a single 28 Vdc output and either 450 W at up to 16 A current output (AVE450B-48S28), or 350 W at 12.5 A current output (AVE350B-48S28-6). Artesyn AVE family converters offer a wide trim range of typically 60 to 118 percent of Vout and up to minus 50 percent to plus 118 percent of Vout. Other features include remote control, remote output sense, trim; and protection features such as input under voltage lockout, output over current protection, output over voltage protection, and over temperature protection.

The new AVE family also includes a dual-output model (AVE450-48D2805), which enables network equipment providers to use less components in their designs and so save space and cost. It delivers up to 12A output current with 28V output voltage and 20A with 5.5V output voltage, which is widely adjustable from 4.5V to 12, for powering digital circuitry. The new dual-output AVE model offers higher than 92 percent efficiency and the same excellent thermal performance as the rest of the AVE series.
The second new family of dc-dc converters announced by Artesyn today, the AGF family, comes in a standard full-brick format with aluminum baseplate structure and power levels of 600, 700 or 800 W with up to 28.6 A output current. It offers higher than 94 percent typical efficiency and excellent thermal performance.

At 800 W power output, the AGF800 series, announced separately today, is the highest power dc-dc module ever produced by Artesyn.

"Customer demands for higher efficiency and more power density have driven these innovative new designs and our engineering teams are continuing to develop power amplifier bricks that lead the industry," said Andy Brown, technical marketing director for dc-dc products at Artesyn Embedded Technologies. "Later this year, Artesyn plans to announce more new families of isolated dc-dc converters to extend the range into small space, high current and low voltage applications such as low-power, low-range, high-bandwidth small and pico cell sites."

Stockholmsmässan starts the year strong after tough 2013

Picture:

Stockholmsmässan has started the year on a positive note. After an intensive spring season, many exhibitors are noticing that the business climate has improved significantly and during the year no less than nine international congresses will be in town. This is a major change compared to 2013, which posted record-low earnings and a loss for the Nordic region's largest exhibition and congress center.

The past year was a tough one for Stockholmsmässan. The company had just emerged from the largest program of cut-backs in its history, and many exhibitors were reducing both the size of their stands and their purchases of auxiliary services due to the poor economy. On top of that, there were only three large international congresses, which, while making it possible to complete a major renovation of the main entrance to the facilities, still meant less income. Total sales for the year amounted to SEK 466 million, which is the lowest outcome in many years and, despite extensive cost savings, put 2013 at a loss after tax of SEK -18.8 million.

“Regardless of the state of the economy, consistent years are always better than inconsistent years at Stockholmsmässan, since several of our large fairs are only held every other year, which in itself made 2013 a weak year. That said, this year we had Nordbygg, which was larger than ever, and even GastroNord, which is being held this week, looks positive, and at the same time we had the great honor of hosting the Bocuse d’Or Europe chef championships. The boat industry usually gives a good indication of the economy and there we saw that the Stockholm International Boat Show had stabilized and even grown a little, and even the signals we received from the Formex exhibitors were encouraging. Our customers are demonstrating greater enthusiasm about the economy than in 2013, even if they are still cautious,” says CEO Patric Sjöberg.

The early spring is always intense with events one right after the other, and this year there have been even more meetings, congresses and fairs on the calendar.

“I usually brag that we are flexible at Stockholmsmässan and that we have a black belt in being able to rearrange the premises quickly, but this year we bordered on the impossible. We started with Formex, then Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, Stockholm International Antiques Fair, Stockholm International Boat Show, the MAX industrial fair, Nordic Gardens and the Outdoor Home Improvement Fair, then big Nordbygg followed by the EAU congress with 10,000 delegates… all of this in a record-short period of time, and we have truly succeeded. Now we are looking forward to starting the congress season in earnest. Several of this year's nine congresses have already been held, but most of them, as usual, will be held during the late spring and summer when Stockholm is most beautiful,” says Patric Sjöberg.

Stockholmsmässan is one of the world's leading and most flexible organisers of meetings. We offer the perfect meeting place for everything from international summits to broad public fairs. Together with exhibitors and organisers we create well-organised meetings which offer the visitor inspiration, knowledge and business opportunities. As the leading organiser in the Baltic Sea Region, we organise some 60 industry-leading exhibitions as well as around 100 national and international congresses, conferences and events anually. Chinese applicants for US grad schools drop

The number of Chinese applicants for graduate schools in the United States has dropped for the second year in a row, figures from an education group in the US show.

Applications from Chinese students for the 2014 fall enrollment dropped by 1 percent from a year earlier, said the report by the Council of Graduate Schools. Applications for the same period last year fell by 3 percent from those of 2012, the report said.
Overall foreign applications for US graduate schools rose by 7 percent, with the highest growth - 32 percent - coming from India, said the report released recently by the council, which advocates graduate education and research.

"Dismissed by some observers a year ago as an aberration, the cooling of the Chinese market no longer can be written off as a one-year blip," the report said.

The survey was conducted in February and March. The 308 institutions that responded account for 67 percent of the estimated 109,000 graduate degrees awarded to international students in 2011-12.

But Max Baucus, the US ambassador to China, said Chinese students still comprise the largest group of foreign students in the US.
"Last year, the US embassy issued 246,000 student and exchange visitor visas to Chinese applicants," Baucus said on Tuesday at a Beijing event for Chinese students heading to the US for study.

"Forty percent of all our student visas are issued to Chinese," he said.

During the 2012-13 academic year, overall Chinese student enrollment at US colleges and universities rose by 21.4 percent to more than 235,000, figures from the 2013 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange showed.

The number of international students enrolled at US higher education institutions in the academic year increased by 7.2 percent to 819,000, according to the report from the nonprofit Institute of International Education, based in the US.
Of the international students in the US, 28.7 percent came from China.

Erik Black, education officer in the public affairs section of the US embassy in Beijing, said the Open Doors report is a "much more comprehensive survey" of more than 3,000 schools. He said that according to this survey, there had been no fall in the number of graduates from China applying to US institutions.

Wang Jing, director of the US section at Chivast Education International, said the latest fall in the number of Chinese applicants to US graduate schools may result from an increasing number of Chinese students choosing to study in the US before university or even before high school.

A*STAR’s ETPL showcases wearable technology, transforming innovative ideas into products through partnerships with designers, manufacturers and universities

Singapore—Preview latest design concepts that integrate the exciting realms of technology, fashion, smart fabrics and data analytics. Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), the technology transfer arm of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), today unveiled a wearable technology display titled "Next-to-the-Skin" Technology Exhibition and Smart Wear Runway Showcase, featuring technology prototypes and fashion concepts at Startup Asia 2014 today.

At the “Next-to-the-Skin" Technology Exhibition, 10 early prototypes incorporating A*STAR technologies will be pitched to an audience from the industry, research and academia. These prototypes combine A*STAR’s scientific expertise with design thinking, bringing together what is aesthetically attractive with what is technically and economically viable.

“Bringing together our scientists, designers, manufacturers and even investors early allows us to understand market needs, fine tune or even change our product offerings. Such platforms encourage more people from academia and industry to collaborate with us to prototype viable ideas,” said Mr Philip Lim, Chief Executive Officer of ETPL.

During the Smart Wear Runway Showcase, 20 different outfits will be modelled onstage. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Galina Mihaleva, a veteran of the fashion industry, students from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) worked with A*STAR researchers to integrate wearable technologies and fashion into unique pieces. Outfits like “Scintillation” and “ἀήρ” (Greek, pronounced as aēr, meaning air) incorporate technologies from A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). “Scintillation” uses luminescent silk to reinforce the design concept while “ἀήρ” uses phase change materials that absorb and dissipate heat efficiently to produce a self-cooling effect for the wearer.

“Fashion is one of the most innovative sectors in the world today. It naturally embraces the dynamism of technology by constantly reinventing itself. Technology plays an important role in synergising art, science and design,” noted Professor Galina.

“We have heard about technology companies that embrace design. Now, it is the reverse and designers today have a comprehensive toolbox of technologies to experiment with. We are excited to be catalysing this process,” Mr Lim added.

This event will showcase 10 prototype pitches, jointly developed by A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and designers from Design Sojourn Pte. Ltd and M Design Solutions Pte. Ltd. The runway showcase of 20 fashion concepts was modelled by A*STAR staff and NTU students.

Inmarsat to provide free global airline tracking service

May 12, 2014

Monday 12 May 2014 –( ASIA TODAY )– In advance of the conference on aircraft tracking being hosted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal on Monday 12th May, Inmarsat, the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications safety services, today confirmed that it has proposed to ICAO a free global airline tracking service over the Inmarsat network, as part of the anticipated adoption of further aviation safety service measures by the world’s airlines following the loss of flight MH370. This service is being offered to all 11,000 commercial passenger aircraft, which are already equipped with an Inmarsat satellite connection, virtually 100% of the world’s long haul commercial fleet.

In addition to this free global airline tracking service, Inmarsat will also offer both an enhanced position reporting facility to support reduced in-flight aircraft separation, and a ‘black box in the cloud’ service, under which – on the back of certain defined trigger events (such as an unapproved course deviation) – historic and real-time flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder information can be streamed off
an aircraft to defined aviation safety recipients.

Rupert Pearce, CEO of Inmarsat, said: “We welcome and strongly support ICAO’s decision to place the delivery of next generation aviation safety services at the heart of the industry’s agenda at its meeting on 12th May. Inmarsat has been providing global aviation safety services for over 20 years and we are confident that the proposals we have presented to ICAO and IATA represent a major contribution to enhancing aviation safety services on a global basis. In the wake of the loss of MH370, we believe this is simply the right thing to do.

“Because of the universal nature of existing Inmarsat aviation services, our proposals can be implemented right away on all ocean-going commercial aircraft using equipment that is already installed. Furthermore, our leading aviation safety partners are fully supportive of expanded use of the ADS-C Service through the Inmarsat network. This offer responsibly, quickly and at little or no cost to the industry, addresses in part the problem brought to light by the recent tragic events around MH370.”

SHANGHAI, May 12, 2014 -( ASIA TODAY )- Asian cultures have long been identified with treating food and medicine as one and the same, but as economic development sweeps through throughout the emerging markets of Asia Pacific, industrialization of functional food is growing at an incredible rate. This massive opportunity is not without risks as companies and government regulators struggle to satisfy all parties involved.

The Asia Pacific Functional Food Summit 2014 is bringing together the most influential figures of the functional food industry with food and drug regulatory officials from across the continent to bring clarity to the development of this field. Drawing on the experience of the highly successful China-based annual functional food summits, presented by Duxes (Shanghai) Business Consulting, the Asia Pacific Functional Food Summit opens in Singapore, bringing this discussion onto a pan-Asian scale.

Headline speakers representing leaders of the corporate, government and organizational sectors will present on topics including the current size and shape of the functional food market, product differentiation according to unique food and medical cultures, channel development in changing trade and regulatory frameworks, as well as the specifics of recent innovative breakthroughs.

Through open panel discussions between industry leaders, delegates will have the opportunity to air their questions personally to see how they are approached from a variety of perspectives. More significantly though, participants will be able to address challenges they are facing with colleagues in informal one-on-one sessions, through which they will develop partnerships and networking with those from otherwise distant areas of the industry.

Over the course of the two-day summit from July3-4, the combination of formal presentations unveiling the latest updated industry intelligence with a combination of such a diverse assortment of industry leaders will be the catalyst of change across Asian Pacific markets for years to come.

The mood at Stockholmsmässan reached the boiling point when Sweden and Tommy Myllymäki took home the victory in the prestigious Bocuse d'Or culinary competition’s European championship on Thursday evening. Implementation of the competition, in the hands of the French organizer GL Events, was also the best ever.

It was an unparalleled festive atmosphere at Stockholmsmässan as the Bocuse d'Or was held in Sweden for the first time. Food lovers from all around the world were on hand, whistling, hooting and cheering on their respective national contestants. At the end of a long day, Tommy Myllymäki took the gold and will be Sweden's representative at the Bocuse d’Or World Championship in Lyon in 2015.

"We are delighted with Tommy and all who have worked to stage the competition in Stockholm and Sweden. It is the culmination of many years of work. We took on a big chore in holding the competition here in conjunction with our food and beverage fairs GastroNord and Vinordic. As happy as we are for the victory, we are just as pleased that the French organizers, GL Events, think that Stockholmsmässan’s implementation of the competition was the best ever,” said Daniel Fritzdorf, event manager for GastroNord and Vinordic.

“It was terrific that we were given responsibility for organizing the competition, which is among the largest held in the Swedish gastronomy. It has been a long journey with many people involved. It began five years ago, when we felt we were ready to stage the competition; we had the knowledge, the city and the site. Two years later, our application was in. We got it, and to crown it all, Tommy went and won”, related Fredrik Eriksson, competition manager of the Swedish Bocuse d'Or Stockholm 2014, Gastronomy Sweden.

The Bocuse d’Or was held at Stockholmsmässan concurrently with GastroNord and Vinordic, northern Europe's largest trade fairs for hotels, restaurants, catering and fast food.

- Under the theme of "Act Together, Think Creative," CEM5 focused on accelerating the transition to a global clean energy economy

SEOUL, South Korea, May 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Recognizing the growing urgency of the world's energy and climate challenges, energy leaders from the world's largest economies and others gathered in Seoul for the fifth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM5) to strategize next steps in their efforts to accelerate the deployment of clean and efficient energy. Hosted by Korea on 12–13 May, CEM5 got underway with opening remarks from Yoon Sang-Jick, Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, who said it was important for those present to "spur a cycle of technology development and market creation." U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz co-chaired the meeting, and in his opening remarks he called on those present to "aim for nothing less than a worldwide clean energy revolution."

Over the two-day meeting, energy ministers and other high-level delegates highlighted progress made through the Ministerial's collaborative initiatives and announced new and expanded actions that will enhance clean energy supply, improve energy efficiency and expand clean energy access around the world.

In an ambitious effort to reduce energy use on a global scale, the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative opened a competition to recognize the most energy-efficient lighting around the world. Grid-based lighting accounts for almost 20% of world electricity consumption. By recognizing and promoting the world's most energy-efficient lighting, the SEAD competition will spur greater innovation among manufacturers and help buyers make informed purchasing decisions that can lower energy bills.

The Clean Energy Solutions Center and the International Renewable Energy Agency signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the Renewable Energy Policy Advice Network (REPAN). The jointly led network will leverage both organizations' resources by coordinating a global network of experts and practitioners that helps countries design and implement renewable energy policies and programs.

The Multilateral Solar and Wind Working Group announced the release of a new report, econValue - The Socio-Economic Benefits of Renewable Energy, which highlights approaches for measuring the economic value, such as jobs and tax revenues, created from the deployment of solar and wind technologies.

The United Kingdom announced a new project under the Carbon Capture, Use and Storage (CCUS) Action Group to produce a guide for countries wishing to implement carbon dioxide (CO2) storage assessment methodologies. This project will be jointly funded by the UK and Korea. The Action Group also announced that it would transition its work to the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum, which will also take on the role of delivering CCUS key messages to ministers during future meetings.

The 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP) announced major new support from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to help Mexico transform its power sector. CIFF will provide up to $3.9 million for power sector technical support that will help Mexico achieve secure, reliable and clean electricity as part of its energy reform agenda.

Mexico also announced a new voluntary industry standard for cool roofs that was developed through support from the Global Superior Energy Performance (GSEP) initiative. The standard provides a technical definition of a cool roof and procedures for testing and rating cool roof materials, providing an important early step in the development of a cool roof market in Mexico.

Additional announcements were made regarding engagement in CEM initiatives: Canada announced it will join the Electric Vehicles Initiative; Japan announced it will join the C3E Women in Clean Energy initiative; and Denmark will join the International Smart Grid Action Network.

Ministers also announced that the CEM would explore three additional work streams: the market accessibility of clean energy products, clean energy finance, and the energy-water nexus.

A unique feature of CEM5 was the Model CEM program. University students were selected to represent CEM member governments and took part in a parallel session to discuss measures to strengthen international cooperation.

CEM5 also featured an awards ceremony where winners of the three award programs active under CEM initiatives were recognized. Entergy New Orleans, Inc.'s "SmartView" Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) pilot took top honors in the inaugural ISGAN Award of Excellence for its consumer engagement and empowerment efforts. Samsung and LG were recognized as winners of SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition for the world's most energy-efficient computer monitors. The Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP) announced winners of the inaugural Global LEAP Off-Grid Appliance Awards.

Global LEAP also organized a first-of-its-kind off-grid appliance and clean energy system "PlugFest" during CEM5. The event brought together low-voltage direct current (DC) appliance manufacturers, off-grid solar home system (SHS) companies and other energy access professionals to share best practices and to test appliance-system interoperability -- a key challenge facing the off-grid clean energy access market.

Looking ahead, the Government of Mexico will host the sixth Clean Energy Ministerial in 2015.

A graphical user interface provides a quick and easy view of system configuration, events and alarms as well as providing a means of configuring switches or payload blades and managing system access. Artesyn's SSF also provides XML and command line interfaces so user applications have access to the rich assortment of system parameters and controls.

The functionality of Artesyn's SSF can be enhanced with Artesyn and 3rd party add-on software modules. For example, Artesyn's ViewCheck™ provides in-service and out-of-service diagnostics of ATCA blades and other system elements. Another add-in, Artesyn's FlowPilot, provides a complete packet load balancing solution.

"By using Artesyn's System Services Framework and its add-in software modules, our customers can focus on their value-add application. We estimate it can save customers up to 40 percent time-to-market versus writing or porting their own system management software", said Jim Darroch, director of software marketing, Artesyn Embedded Technologies. "Artesyn SSF provides the tools necessary to speed the development process and brings a whole new level of ease-of-operation to ATCA systems."
