Oishii Japan 2013 to showcase the best of Japanese F&B

• Some 230 exhibitors from 26 prefectures expected to showcase classic foods, innovative products, and share business knowledge

Singapore, 24 September 2013 – Oishii Japan, ASEAN’s first and largest dedicated showcase on Japanese food and beverage products, returns following its successful debut last year. To be held from 17 to 19 October 2013 at Suntec Singapore, the exhibition aims to connect local and regional F&B trade professionals with the latest and the best of Japan’s F&B industry.

The showcase is organised by Oishii Japan Executive Committee with the aim of promoting Japanese cuisine abroad. Oishii Japan consists of three core areas: classic foods, innovative products, and the Japanese F&B business. Trade visitors can explore business opportunities with some 230 exhibitors from 26 prefectures.

Oishii Japan exhibition space was snapped up by early August by exhibitors ranging from product and equipment companies to government agencies and associations. The annual trade show targets the trade professionals including chefs, restaurateurs, hoteliers, importers and distributors, retailers as well as new business owners and investors in the F&B industry.

“Japanese cuisine is highly popular in ASEAN, therefore it is not surprising that Japanese F&B products and expertise are in high demand here. Through Oishii Japan, we hope to foster greater understanding, exchanges and collaborations between industry players to build and increase the appreciation for Japanese F&B”, said Mr Masanao Nishida, Director of Oishii Japan.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), ASEAN saw an increase of 9 per cent[1] in Japanese F&B imports to 81 billion Yen in 2012 and Singapore recorded a rise of 2.7 per cent to 14.5 billion Yen.


Strong support show confidence in Singapore and ASEAN markets

Key Japanese government and trade bodies that have rendered their strong support to Oishii Japan include: MAFF; Embassy of Japan; ASEAN-Japan Centre; Japan Council of Local Authorities for International Relations Singapore; Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO); Japan Halal Association; Japan National Tourism Organisation; Japan Tourism Agency; and Japanese Association in Singapore, ASEAN-Japan Centre, Hokkaido Government, Japan National Tourism Organisation and Japan Food Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (FOOMA).

F&B associations, namely the Food and Beverage Managers’ Association of Singapore, the Singapore Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers and Suppliers, the Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association and the Forum of Indian Food Importers will likewise be supporting the exhibition.

Familiar favourites and new surprises
Visitors to the 4,000 square metre showcase can look forward returning signature Japanese F&B products such as beef, sake, sauces and condiments, noodles, utensils and tableware as well as F&B equipment that have been very well-received last year.

In addition, innovative products and new-to-market brands has been added to the show to introduce variety and raise awareness of the diversity in Japanese F&B products. Seminars and a business matching programme are planned to facilitate knowledge sharing and networking among the exhibitors and trade buyers.

Key highlights include:
- Classic Foods
• J-Ramen Collection pavilion: A unique showcase featuring three of Japan’s leading ramen chefs – Keisuke Takeda (Keisuke), Kenji Tsukada (Bond of Hearts) and Tsujita Takehiro (Nidaime Tsujita) – who are converging at Oishii Japan to demonstrate their culinary finesse.
• Sake breweries including the award-winning Sake Ippin and Hyogo Prefecture’s Nada no Sake will showcase a variety of premium sake that will amaze sake aficionados.

- Innovative Products
• J-Food Tech pavilion: a first-of-its-kind showcase of ten leading food machinery companies from Japan to display innovative F&B equipment and technologyfor food processing and related operations. Participants include: Naomoto Corporation; Sanuki Menki Co Ltd; Nantsune Co Ltd; and Dremax Co Ltd and Teraoka Weigh-System Pte Ltd.
• FOOMA: the association ventures into ASEAN for the first time and is making its presence at Oishii Japan to establish business ties with regional industry players and boast awareness on Japanese F&B machinery and technology.

- Business-matching
• Buyers programme: key buyers from the region are specially invited by Oishii Japan organisers and JETRO to attend the expo as hosted buyers. They will hold business meetings with the exhibitors.

Oishii Japan will also be featuring key collaborations with industry experts and established chefs. In particular, Singapore chef Janice Wong from 2am:dessertbar will be conducting a confectionery demonstration on 17 October highlighting the use of authentic Japanese ingredients.

Other educational activities on trade days include:
• The Anatomy of Japanese Wagyu, an educational seminar, conducted by Livestock Industry Association, for a broader understanding of the famous Japanese Wagyu beef.
• The Art of Freshness in Japanese Cuisine, a demonstration and food tasting session by Chef Shigeru Shiraishi of Takumi, a robatayaki and teppanyaki style restaurant.
• A Warrior’s Guide to Japanese Liquor, a practical workshop conducted by Ayuchi Momose, a certified ‘Sake Samurai’ recognised by Japan Sake Brewers Association Junior Council.
• Let’s Eat “UMAMI”! Taste Japan, a demonstration and food tasting session by Chef Akihiro Maotomo, Chikuyotei of Intercontinental Hotel.

Special activities for public
Oishii Japan is open to the public on the last day (19 October 2013). Japanese food enthusiasts can check out a wide gamut of Japanese F&B products and gain a deeper appreciation for one of Singapore’s favourite cuisines through live demonstrations and workshops.

One of the popular highlights, Udon Experience is a hands-on udon-making workshop for parents and kids aged 10 to 12 years. It will be limited to 15 pairs of children with an accompanying parent each. Pre-registration can be done at Kagawa Prefecture booth.

Oishii Japan 2013 is open only to trade visitors on 17 and 18 October. Members of the public can visit the expo on 19 October. The debut edition of Oishii Japan attracted over 5,000 visitors from 20 countries in 2012.
