About Chunghwa Telecom – Gold Sponsor
Originated from a business unit of the Directorate General of Telecommunications, Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (“Chunghwa” or “the Company”) was officially established as a state-owned company on July 1, 1996 as part of the Republic of China government’s restructuring efforts to liberalize and privatize the telecommunications industry. Chunghwa started trading on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “2412” in October 2000 and on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “CHT” in July 2003. In August 2005, Chunghwa became a privatized company when the government ownership declined to less than 50%. Today, Chunghwa is the largest integrated telecommunication services provider in Taiwan.
Chunghwa’s already market leading position is strengthened as a result of the auction outcome for mobile broadband service licenses. In October 2013, the company has acquired the largest amount of bandwidth with 2x35MHz including most sought after slot at 1800MHz and two slots currently held for 2G services. It would help ensure the company has the potential to be the first-to-market to launch and offer high speed 4G services over LTE technology, and also maintain 2G services for customers. Chunghwa plans to launch 4G services in the second half of 2014 and expects to have covered over 96% of the Taiwan population within five years.
