28 March 2014 – The 18th Hong Kong International Film and Television Market (FILMART) drew to a close yesterday, with record-high exhibitor and buyer participation. The four-day event welcomed more than 770 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions, up nine per cent over last year, and some 6,750 buyers, up seven per cent over last year.
FILMART is Asia’s largest film and TV mart. This year, local buyers were up three per cent over last year, to more than 3,000. Overseas buyers increased by 10 per cent, with those coming from the United States up more than 20 per cent, underlining FILMART’s importance and Hong Kong’s growing status as the region’s film and entertainment hub.
“Across Asia, opportunities in the film and television entertainment market abound,” said HKTDC Assistant Executive Director Raymond Yip. “On the Chinese mainland, in particular, the demand for high-quality entertainment content is growing inexorably, which is why FILMART is attracting more overseas film companies.”
Exhibitor highlights included the mainland, which counted 155 exhibitors, and the Russia Cinema Fund, which set up its first group pavilion at FILMART, featuring nine film and television companies. France, Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom expanded the size of their pavilions. Other returning pavilions included Canada, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the US. The US pavilion, with nearly 40 exhibitors, was its largest yet at FILMART. This year’s Location World included 10 overseas organisations.
FILMART is one of nine multimedia events in Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, which continues through 13 April.
