Tainan, Taiwan - In a bid to train students of design and business with practical-based courses, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has collaborated with some of the country’s leading enterprises to launch a unique program called db school that encourage creative thinking.
Currently, the BootCamp 2014 which is initiated by the Institute of Creative Industry Design (ICID), NCKU, as the first program of db school, is taking place at the institute from June 23 to July 4.
“In db school, we’d like to combine the resources from the college of design and the college of business and bridge the industry and education from business insight to innovation,” said Professor Shuenn-Ren Liou, director of the Institute of Creative Industry Design (ICID), NCKU.
A total of 25 students from interdisciplinary fields including design, business, engineering, and medicine took part in the camp with 3 renowned designers as tutors and 12 teachers from ICID involved.
The students are divided into three groups to tackle with three cases, which are Department Store HAYASHI, Tainan Hotel Royal, and NCKU C-Hub respectively.
Liou noted that the topic of the camp is centered on business innovation, especially on branding.
He also said, the three cases the students tackle with in the camp are from the real world of business in Taiwan.
To propose brand strategy, explore competitive advantage and yield solutions to the problems the entrepreneurs raised require interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts, according to Liou.
At the end of the first week, with the help from the tutors, the students investigated into the business and reported their preliminary findings of case study to the entrepreneurs.
In the second week, the students are required to apply not only design thinking but business thinking to integrate mindset, talents and resources in solving the problems. And then they will present their projects to the entrepreneurs on the last day of Boot Camp.
