National Taiwan University and Taiwan’s Academia Sinica officially unveiled the NTU-AS Joint Office on Aug. 25 in the spirit of establishing closer relations for further cultivation of academic and research talent. The office is located in the NTU Center for Condensed Matter Sciences and is co-headed by NTU Vice President Ching-Ray Chang (張慶瑞) and Academia Sinica Vice President Yu Wang (王瑜).

So far, NTU and Academia Sinica have worked together in establishing the Translational Medicine and the Genome and Systems Biology PhD degree programs. The office’s short-term goal is to expand the two programs to include master’s degrees, then again join forces to set up more degree programs in the various new and emerging fields of science and technology.

In addition to educational cooperation, the NTU-AS Joint Office also plans to expand upon the existing “ Drunken Moon Lake Integrated Scientific Research Platform” to encourage active research cooperation between our scholars. By focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration, the Office hopes to make key breakthroughs so as to enhance the nation’s global technological competitiveness.

The collaboration between the two institutions will initially be extended to Academia Sinica’s Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Institute of Mathematics, and Institute of Biological Chemistry. Under the agreement, the up to 400 researchers and staff members from the four institutes will be able to enjoy the same benefits and resources as those of NTU’s employees. In creating an optimized working environment, the academicians will be able to focus on their teaching and research responsibilities, whereas the sharing of resources will also bring NTU and Academia Sinica closer in aspects beyond the academics.
