31st October 2014 - Hong Kong - ASIATODAY.COM - The Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2014 (HKICC 2014), organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) for 37 years in a row, took place on October 30 and 31 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Information Communication & Technology (ICT) executives and experts locally and from overseas delivered insightful presentations on a range of contemporary topics around the theme “Smart City – Let IT Go”, while participants also benefited greatly from the lively panel discussions as well.

Mr. Michael Leung, President of Hong Kong Computer Society, pointed out that “over the past decades, ICT has become perhaps the most instrumental change agents of our daily lives, and has brought modern lifestyles to a lot of people in the world.” For most urban dwellers, ICT has facilitated tremendous progress to their communities, particularly in government, healthcare, education, business and entertainment space.

The 2-day HKICC featured more than 40 local and international speakers, and addressed nine major areas under the theme “Smart City”:

1. Cloud
2. e-Health
3. Connectivity and Mobility
4. Security and Privacy
5. Start-up
6. e-Government
7. Social Media and Big Data
8. e-Lifestyle
9. Energy

The Conference was honored to have Mr. Allan Chiang, SBS, Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong; Mr. Daniel Lai, BBS, JP, HKSAR Government Chief Information Officer; Mr. Li Jian-ping, Secretary General, The China Smart City Industry Technology Innovation Alliance; Mr. Cameron Fox, STEM Pioneer and Specialist in Hong Kong, and Dr. Jong-song Hwang, Head of The Center for Gov3.0, National Information Society Agency in Korea, joined the conference as keynote speakers. Their sessions collectively provided a comprehensive overview of the development and impact of ICT, most noticeably cloud and mobility technologies as well as “Internet of Things”, on the communities and environments in which we learn, work and live. Mr. Li Jian-ping from China and Dr. Jong-song Hwang from Korea also gave participants inspiring talks on the developments of “Smart City” in their respective homelands.

While “Smart City” has brought many people a better life, Ir. Stephen Lau, JP, chairperson of HKICC 2014 Organizing Committee, commented that “we cannot ignore any lurking dangers that could result in far-reaching damages. Cyber-attacks and breach of personal data privacy are two of the serious issues being put under the spotlight in recent years.” The panel on the “How to Deal with the Inevitable Cyber Attack in the Smart City”, and the keynote on “Privacy Rights and Issues in a Smart and Mobile Society” by Mr. Allan Chiang, would aptly remind participants the importance of staying vigilant in this regard.

As in previous years, HKICC 2014 received unfailing support from industry practitioners, major corporations, government offices, and academic circles. Its success had once again demonstrated the collective strength of the ICT Industry as a whole, and the ability of HK Computer Society in achieving higher acclaim for this flagship event in the years ahead.
