Expanded exhibition space at the Taiwan and Shanghai pavilions meant more new items could be found this year.

“Prolight + Sound Shanghai is one of Asia’s best known professional audio and lighting, event and entertainment technology show,” said Ms Fiona Chiew, Deputy General Manager for Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd. “I am glad to see a remarkable 10 percent increase in international visitors and new visitors from Belarus, Cuba, Cyprus, Hungary, Jamaica, Panama, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Uruguay and Venezuela. The growing number of attendees and the popularity of fringe events gives clear evidence of the fair’s success, making it as a must-visit platform for professional and business content.”

The strong potential of China’s entertainment market attracted leading international and domestic brands to promote their new products at the fair. Italian brand dB Technologies was launching its new products at the booth. “One of the new products we are launching here is specifically made for Chinese and Asian markets. Prolight + Sound Shanghai is one of the most important shows in Asia. That’s why we think dB Technologies can take advantage of this show,” said Mr Gianluca Dalessandro, International Sales Manager for the company, “We have a lot of customers coming from Asia, Africa and Latin America. We believe that this show will be more and more important in the future.”

Mr Chris Zhang, Director for a famous brand agent, Phoenix Audio and Lighting Technology Limited, shared the same opinion. “The fair is very influential in China, especially the southeast region which is important to our business. A show like this also serves as a major platform for brand promotion and product launching. Many new and existing customers have shown great interest in our products and our company’s new developments.”

Mr Frank Zhu, Executive Deputy Manager for Guangzhou Ruifeng Audio Technology Incorporation complimented Prolight + Sound Shanghai for being a well-rounded event. “I think there is still space to grow for China’s entertainment market. It’s important to take part in this significant industry event to increase our market share. Here we can meet with many customers and explore new business with buyer delegations.” Mr Zhu also thought it was a good idea to set up outdoor line array demonstration and seminars at the show, “It’s very practical for visitors to better understand different products’ performances and see what’s new in the market.”

Professional lighting supplier Guangzhou Omarte Lighting Co Ltd saw the growing need for innovative and energy-saving products in China. “The south eastern part of China is one of the most economically developed areas with a lot of export businesses, and the demand for quality products is higher. The market is looking for more compact yet effective, energy-saving and innovative products,” explained Mr Zhengcai Hua, General Manager of the company. “This show is located in this developed area and has attracted many good quality lighting designers and customers. This is a good opportunity to talk to them face-to-face and promote our brand.”

Visitors were amazed with the wide selection and the high quality of Chinese suppliers. “I’m happy with what’s on offer at the fair. The product range you have here is big and seems to be growing. My objective here is to find new products and contacts and I’m satisfied I could achieve this,” commented Mr Julian Beaufils, Product Manager for Woodbrass.com from France.

American buyer Mr Norman Wright, Vice-President of Lighting for Group One Limited was happy with the strong line up of Chinese suppliers and their product quality. “I’ve found three different products from three manufacturers that I could purchase so that’s good. Here you can find more Chinese manufacturers so you have more sourcing options at different price levels. I’m always happy to come here. The show is very straightforward and it’s easy to get around the halls.”

Visitors also found the lighting products on-offer were good in quality and price range. “This is my first time visiting and I am impressed with the clear and comprehensive product groups here. I have found some LED, lighting and stage equipment that I am interested in,” said Mr Yun Fei Yuan, Manager for Rongcheng Boyuan Media. He further added, “I will also go to their factories to further understand their production line. Thanks to the fair I can do the factory visits in only a few days after the show which would normally take half a year to finish.”

Mr Ren Jian Fu, Project Manager from Uni Group placed an order from an exhibitor on-site. “We purchased a control panel for lighting from a supplier at Hall W5. For me, this show is more than just sourcing. I get to experience many new products and technologies as well as learning market trends. It means a lot to me.”

Fringe programmes demonstrated industry commitment to innovative technology

Besides a wide range of audio and lighting products on display, the show also featured a series of dynamic events and live demonstrations offering valuable perspectives of latest industry trends and innovative technology.

New Media Design and Application Forum was one of the highlights of the show covering projection mapping and new media technology applications. Mr Thomas Giegerich, Managing Director for Bright! GmbH gave a lecture on project mapping and was pleased with the response. “It’s my first time attending Prolight + Sound Shanghai. This seminar was just a start and the project mapping is a new issue to all of the shows. I’d love to come to this show again next year.”

Forum audience Mr Wei Dai from Henan Liheng Electronic Technology Co Ltd agreed that the forum was very informative. “The forum provided a good overview of new developments in technology and it helps expand our business profile.”

Stage Art Design and Technology Forum was full of industry peers hungry for new updates in stage lighting design for TV shows. One of the speakers, Mr Oliver Leigers, Founder of Theateringenieur.de commented, “The event attracted a lot of people. The development of China is growing fast in a very short time and it’s a good chance for us to show how to operate and develop in Germany and Europe. It was a nice experience.”

An audience from Classic Studio Design Versus Virtual Sets in TV Production hosted by Mr Maximilian Below, Managing Director for MCI found the topic highly relevant to his daily business. “I work in the TV production sector. The content of the seminar keeps me updated with what’s going on in the international TV production industry,” said Mr Yun Lin from Production Department of CBN.

Another signature event of the show − Concert Sound Arena − was packed with people attending outdoor line array demonstrations from 10 leading audio brands. “It’s very good having the outdoor demo areas to see the products in action. Not all fairs can do that but the space here allows it,” said Mr Alessandro Pagliani, Director of Sales EMEA/Latin America for KV2 Audio from the Czech Republic.

Visitors also benefited from other fringe events including Human Centered Media, Acoustics Technology Forum, AV System Application in the Hotel Industry and Product Presentations.
