In an inaugural collaboration, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has teamed up with Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) to launch an exhibition revolving around the theme of “Superheroes in Science”. Titled “Modern-Day Explorers: Science Superheroes Changing the World”, the six-month exhibition was officially launched at the Maritime Experiential Museum at RWS on 6 November 2012.
The new educational exhibition is targeted at primary and secondary school students, who will be able to observe the life and work of nine of the world’s leading scientists in comic book-like fashion. The modern-day scientists are portrayed as life-sized 2D caricatures, donning their capes, with informative write-ups retelling the amazing journey of scientific discovery.
Students will get to learn about complicated theories like directed evolution and nanoscience in an easy-to-understand, fun and visual manner. These ‘Superheroes in Science’ include renowned geneticist Dr Craig Venter, Nobel laureate Sir Harold Kroto, and biomedical pioneer Professor Robert Langer.
The exhibition was officially launched by Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive of the Singapore Science Centre.
“Science education is driven by our natural curiosity, and should be fun and interactive. Through this exhibition at the Maritime Experiential Museum, we hope to raise awareness among youth of important scientific issues such as energy, environment and medicine,” says Dr Park Yuhyun, Director at the President’s Office, NTU. “By profiling the world's leading scientists as real-life science superheroes, we hope to encourage children to pursue careers in science. Like maritime explorers of past centuries, today’s scientists are also pushing the boundaries of what is possible.”
“The Maritime Experiential Museum aims to inspire a sense of exploration and this is done through the interactive exhibits as well as a year-long calendar of events, talks and educational programmes that promotes experiential learning.” says Jason Horkin, Director Maritime Experiential Museum, Resorts World Sentosa. “We are very happy to work with Nanyang Technological University on this Modern-Day Explorers exhibition, which helps to bring the sciences to life for visitors, and hopefully inspire them to learn more about the work of these modern-day superheroes.”
The exhibition builds on the success of the Singapore’s inaugural Molecular Frontiers Symposium on Emerging Technologies in Biomedicine, co-organised by NTU and the Molecular Frontiers Foundation in Stockholm, in April 2012. The event saw over 500 students from junior colleges and polytechnics gather to interact with top scientists, like Dr Venter himself.
