Water Expo China 2014 was successfully held from 1 – 3 December at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. The three-day event, covering 22,000 sqm, was organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES).
Commenting on the show was Mr Jason Cao, Chairman of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd. He said: “The 2014 fair attracted 320 exhibitors from 24 countries and regions, as well as 24,408 visitors from 40 countries and regions. Among the visitors, 20,802 were domestic visitors and 3,606 were international visitors. Additionally, we welcomed 50 domestic and overseas visitor delegations with the support of various overseas and domestic government agencies and trade associations. The continuous increase of participation figure proves that Water Expo China is an important and comprehensive sourcing platform in the water industry.”
Mr Li Zantang, Secretary General of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society added: “Supported by the government, the market demand for water-related products and solutions in China continues to grow. Through incorporating interactive concurrent events at the fair, we have positioned Water Expo China as the ultimate destination for water industry professionals to exchange knowledge among other industry peers. Through our interactions, exhibitors are generally pleased with the tremendous value in networking, and meeting new agents and distributors.”

Both new and returning exhibitors to Water Expo China saw the exhibition as an effective platform for business expansion in China.
For Sound Group, a renowned environmental protection and renewable energy solutions provider in China and first time exhibitor, the fair acted as an important platform to promote their firm and brand image. Ms Liu Xintao, the company’s Marketing Department Business Manager, said: “The visitor flow this year is outstanding and visitors were extremely professional. Over 30% of them were from government organisations, research institutions, universities and water treatment enterprises. This show is a significant platform for industry sectors focusing on environmental protection, water resources and water treatment.”
Xylem Analytics, a leading provider of premium field, portable, online and laboratory analytical instrumentations from the US, is a long term participant and have returned again to promote their products. Ms Jiang Lili, Product Engineer for the company, expressed: “The results we attained at the show were better than expected. I really appreciate the organisers for inviting various visitor delegations to increase visitor flow. The visitors who came to our booth showed high levels of interest in our products. All in all, the show was very professional and we were able to meet a number of target customers. I look forward to the next edition of the show.”
Long-term exhibitor Dayu Conserving Water Group Co Ltd returned again this year. Mr Sun Kelai, Assistant of International Trade Development for the firm, commented: “2014 was a fruitful year for us. We met with representatives from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) who agreed to promote our irrigation system. Moreover, we also connected with potential buyers from Russia who requested quotations on certain products. We have achieved our objective.”
First-year participant, Dr Liang Zhichao, R&D Center Director for Yonggao Co Ltd, Chairman Unit of China Plastics Piping Association (CPPA), shared the same sentiment. He said: “This year, we recorded remarkable results. We met with government officials and property owners in the water treatment field who have already agreed to act as distributing agents for our products. Additionally, we have also successfully connected with buyers from Austria, Russia and other European countries. Water Expo China is a highly beneficial platform for promoting our company in both domestic and international markets. ”
Mr Martin Vilhelmsen is a company representative of Ramboll Co Ltd, a leading engineering, design and consultancy firm. As a participating exhibitor of the Denmark Pavilion, which is organised by the Trade Council of Denmark in China and the Royal Danish Embassy, he expressed: “The fair was executed in a professional manner, reflecting the show organisers’ attention to service and experience within the trade fair industry. We are very happy with the results this year as a number of buyers showed great interest in our products. Based on the positive comments we have acquired, we will come back again next year.”
Mr Jin Hai Ri, Exhibition Department Manager of Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, one of the Korean Pavilion organisers, added: “Supported by government authorities, the Chinese market is very important to us. We see great potential for Korean companies to expand their businesses in China to establish partnerships and joint ventures.”
Visitors were impressed by the prominent brands presented, and the diversity of products and technologies displayed at the fair. First-time visitor Mr Liu Dakai, R&D Engineer for REHAU Polymers (Suzhou) Co Ltd Shanghai Branch, said: “ I learnt a lot about the water industry in China and connected with high-quality water purification and treatment product suppliers. Apart from the exhibition, I also came specifically to take part in the concurrent seminars and conferences to gain additional market intelligence. The event has been very useful and I will most definitely be back again next year.“
Mr Fabrizio Della Mora, Purchasing Manager of Danieli, one of the world’s largest suppliers of equipment and metal plants in Thailand, visited the event for the first time. He said: “I came to the show to source industrial pumps and reverse osmosis equipment, and was pleased to have come across several potential business partners. In addition to sourcing the products I intended for, I also gained better insight on the future development of China’s water industry."
The Korea visitor delegation led by Mr Yang Jin Dan, Director of the Institute of Water Industry Human Resource Development at the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association, said: “This year we invited 42 delegates from 25 water purification factories to visit Water Expo China. Their objectives were to primarily source high-quality purification membranes and other advanced water purification products. We were all very pleased to see a large variety of products displayed and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.”

A range of concurrent events addressing the most relevant issues of the water industry in China also added to the show’s success. Featuring the theme “China’s Deep Reform on Enhancing Water Ecology”, the ninth edition of the China International Water Business Summit was one of the most anticipated events held alongside the show. Some of the industry’s most influential experts and scholars were invited to share their views on the latest market trends and industry news.
Another key event was the presentation on “Sustainable Management Strategies of Water Resources in China”, organised by Shanghai Water Engineering Association. Ms Qian Yi, Tsinghua University Professor of Environmental Engineering Institute, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice Chairman of Beijing CPPCC was invited to be the keynote speaker. She not only brought awareness to China’s water resource and pollutions challenges, but also suggested solutions on pending issues to improve water conservancy in China. The fifth edition of the International Water Business Matching Forum was held on 3 December. One of the forum experts, Mr Zhou Jun, Chief Engineer from Beijing JingCheng Reclaimed Water Co Ltd, remarked: “The Business Matching Forum brings mutual benefits to attending experts and enterprises, and encourages development of the water industry. Exhibitors who took part in the forum were well-prepared and displayed high levels of professionalism. Additionally, I was particularly pleased with the efforts the organisers put into the forum for making it such a valuable and informative event.”
One of the business matching companies seeking business opportunities in China was Cla-Val Pacific Ltd from New Zealand. Mr Glynn Nuthall, the Asia-Pacific Manager for the firm, said: “The forum was an extremely worthwhile event, specifically for overseas companies like us who are trying to tap the Chinese market. The experts we spoke to at the forum provided us good insight on what Chinese clients require in particular products. The forum served as a useful tool for our business to expand in China.”
