Madrid, 26 February 2015.- The 61st edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid (MBFWM), organised by IFEMA, and considered the best exponent of Spanish fashion and its creative diversity, has now come to an end. The event was a great success, recording a total of 48,631 visitors, a number that is slightly greater than in the last two editions, and displayed a very satisfactory balance in terms of the level of the collections presented.
For six days, from 6-11 February, fashion was once again at the forefront of the event, which hosted Autumn-Winter 2015/16 collections by 41 Spanish designers, and for the first time this year, three reputable Portuguese designers (Miguel Vieira, Anabela Baldaque and Júlio Torcato), who participated as part of the initiative which saw Portugal invited as a Guest Country.
Another highlight of this edition, in which the great Spanish fashion show celebrated its 30 years, was the inclusion of designers The 2nd Skin Co., Leandro Cano and Esther Noriega. Alongside the 44 designers and brands that took part in the show, fifteen emerging design talents showcased their proposals at the SAMSUNG EGO Showroom in CIBELESPACIO.
Novelties at this year’s SAMSUNG EGO event included the participation of 9 young Spanish design talents (3 who were present in previous editions and 6 newcomers), the presence of Turkish designer Lug Von Siga as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent Award, and the show by the designer Gómez, who as the winner of the third edition of the Samsung EGO Innovation Project Award opened the fashion event on 11 February.
Also, as in the previous edition, the MBFWM opened the doors of its catwalk to the city. Its catwalk events were once again broadcasted on the screens located in the gastronomic entertainment multi-space Platea Madrid, in Plaza de Colón.
Desigual opened the catwalk season
The catwalk season of this edition was started off on 6 February with the presentation of the Women's collection presented by the brand Desigual. On the following day, Saturday 7 February, Duyos was the first of a series of presentations by designers from the Spanish Fashion Creators’ Association (ACME from its Spanish initials), which went on until Tuesday 10 February. Later on that same Tuesday, fashion shows by brands that do not belong to the Association took place, as well as a double show for leather goods. As in previous editions, the last day (Wednesday 11 February) was devoted to young creators from the SAMSUNG EGO platform, who presented their collections in five double shows.
30 years of fashion shows
The fashion show celebrated 30 years in this edition. Three decades of experience in which the Madrid fashion show has proved to be the essential platform for promoting the Spanish fashion industry as a whole, making Madrid one of the world’s major fashion capitals.
The creation in February 1985 of the Cibeles Catwalk, known today as the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid and organised by IFEMA, served to
lay the foundations for creation and design in Spain, and, at the same time, promote and create awareness of emerging talent in our country.
Since its inauguration in 1985, nearly 300 Spanish designers have presented their collections at the event.
In order to celebrate such a special anniversary, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Club, in the MBFWM Cibeles space, saw a complete selection of photos and videos come together from different catwalks and fashion shows over three decades, which all visitors to the space were able to view throughout the six days over which this edition was held. In addition, on Saturday 7 February the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Club held a commemorative event to celebrate its 30th anniversary, which was attended by María Moreira and Antonio Alvarado, two designers who participated in the first edition of the Cibeles Fashion Show, as well as other designers that have presented collections at various stages in this fashion show's history, and, for that matter, the history of Spanish fashion itself.
Various awards
The fashion show of Madrid was, once again, the stage to present the awards sponsored by L'Oreal Paris. The L'Oreal award for best collection by an established designer was won for the second time in a row by design duo Alvarno, and the award for best model was given to young Madrilenian Amanda Moreno.
At the SAMSUNG EGO session, the best designer was chosen in the scope of the fifth edition of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent Award, supported by the different fashion shows Mercedes-Benz sponsors worldwide. Maria Clé was the winning designer in this edition. The aim of these awards is to acknowledge the best young designer from the SAMSUNG EGO platform and give them international recognition by including them in one of the following season’s major Mercedes-Benz shows elsewhere in the world.
Record number of sponsors
This edition of the fashion show has gone a step further in terms of the strong support received from the private sector and has registered a record number of supporting brands. Altogether, twenty-two leading brands from various sectors will be sponsoring this event. What they all have in common is their association, through various activities, with one of the leading names in fashion and new trends - the fashion show of Madrid.
Mercedes-Benz, L'Oreal Paris and INDITEX were the main sponsors, together with Samsung, Solan de Cabras, Movistar and G'Vine. Additionally, Cervezas Alhambra Reserva 1925, Schweppes, Swarovski, Oral B 3DWhite Luxe, Rowenta, Lavazza, Coca-Cola, Venus Concept, Kaiku Choco Latte, Mustang and Fashion TV also supported the event.
Other brands that were present were Kleenex, Lord Wilmore, Elephant & Castle, and Esden Business School, a business school specialising in fashion, which as it did last year organised a series of master classes in between fashion shows and given by professional experts in the world of fashion, which recorded a high level of public attendance.
Coinciding with Momad Metrópolis
Also, this year’s MBFWM coincided from 8-10 February with Momad Metropolis, the International Fashion Trade Show, where over 1,200 textile, footwear and accessories companies came together to showcase their products. For the third time running, the two events, organised by IFEMA, were held on the same dates and at the same venue with the aim of continuing to generate synergies among buyers and the national and foreign press, in the process reinforcing Madrid as one of the world’s major fashion capitals.
